  • The present study deals with CFD analysis of 'The vortex generators on plastic plate heat exchanger'. When a vortex generator is placed on the heat transfer surface, the flow gets more complex because it entails complicated three-dimensional flows such as separation, reattachment, and recirculation. CFX-5.4, a commercial code utilizing unstructured mesh, has been used as a computational method for solving RANS(Reynolds-Averaged Wavier-Stokes) equations, and the applied turbulence model is $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. In addition, those computational analyses were implemented under various conditions , with or without the vortex generator between two plates, the number, form and the size of vortex generator, and different attack of angle. From the calculated temperature, velocity and pressure distribution, vorticity, wall heat flux and so on under those conditions, this study shows the effect of vortex on heat transfer.

  • The unsteady flow characteristics and the related noise of separated incompressible laminar boundary layer flows (Re$\sub$$\delta$/* = 614, 868, and 1,063) are numerically investigated. The characteristic lines of the wall pressure are examined to identify the primary noise source, related with the unsteady motion of the vortex at the reattachment point of the separation bubble. The generation and propagation of the vortex-induced noise in the separated laminar boundary layer are computed by the method of Computational Aero-Acoustics (CAA), and the effects of Reynolds number, Mach number and adverse pressure gradient strength are examined.

  • Numerical investigation on the dynamic stall over an oscillating airfoil is presented. A Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are coupled with transition transport equations for the natural transition. Computational results considering the turbulent transition are compared with the fully turbulent computations and the experimental data. Results with transition prediction show closer correlation with the experimental data than those with the fully turbulent assumption, especially in the reattachment region.

  • Algebraic Reynolds Stree (ARS) model is applied in order to analyze the turbulent flow of wall-attaching offset jet and to evaluate the predictability of model. The applied numerical schemes are the upwind scheme and the skew-upwind scheme. The numerical results show a good prediction in the first order calculations(i.e., reattachment length, mean velocity, pressure), however, slight deviations in the second order(i.e., kinetic energy and turbulence intensity). Comparing with the previous results using the k-$\varepsilon$ model, the ARS model predicts better than the standard k-$\varepsilon$ model, however, slightly worse than the k-$\varepsilon$ model including the streamline curvature modification. Additionallay this study can reconfirm that the skew-upwind scheme has approximately 25% improved predictability than the upwind scheme.

  • The present study investigates heat/mass transfer characteristics in rotating two-pass ducts of three different aspect ratios with 90-ribbed surfaces. The results show that the flows generated by the 180-turn, rib turbulators, and duct rotation. The curvature of the 180-turn produces Dean vortices causing high heat/mass transfer in the turning region and in the upstream region of the second-pass. The rib turbulators disturb the main flow by producing reattachment and separation near the ribbed surfaces, and increase heat/mass transfer in the region between the ribs. As the rotation number increases, the heat/mass transfer discrepancy between the leading and the trailing surfaces become larger.

  • This study has focused on aerodynamics for a wind-resistance design about the single and tandem box girder sections to realize a super-long span bridge in the near future. Three-dimensional static analysis of flows around the fundamental single and tandem box girder sections with fairing is carried out by means of the IBTD/FS finite element technique with LES turbulence model. As the results of the analysis, computations have verified aerodynamic characteristics of both sections by the histories of aerodynamic forces, the separation and reattachment flow patterns and the surface pressure distributions. The relationship between the section shapes and the aerodynamic characteristics is also investigated in both sections. And the mechanism about the generation of fluctuating aerodynamic forces is discussed.

  • Numerical analysis of aerodynamic heating for KPSAM is performed using aerodynamic heating model suitable to KPSAM, which has complex flow field resulting from the spike attached to the dome, such as large separation area and the strong shock/boundary layer interaction region around reattachment point on the dome. The aerodynamic heating model is validated and modified through the comparison between the flight test measurement and the thermal analysis results. TFD temperature sensors are installed on the dome to measure surface temperature during the flight. Computation results, obtained from the heat transfer analysis on the sensors, agree well with flight test data. The aerodynamic heating model provides heat transfer rate into surface as a boundary condition of unsteady 1D/axisymmetric thermal analysis on the missile structure. The axisymmetric thermal analysis using FLUENT is more versatile than the 1D analysis and can be applied to the heating problem related with complex structures and multi-dimensional heat transfer problems such as prediction of temperature rise at contact surface of different materials.

  • Four turbulent $k-{varepsilon}$models(i.e standard model modified models with streamline curvature modification and/or preferential dissipation modification) are applied in order to analyze the tur-bulent flow of wall-attaching offset jet. The upwind numerical scheme was adopted in the present analyses. The streamline curvature modification results in slightly better prediction while the preferential dissipation modification does not. The obtained analytic results will be used as refer-ences for further study regarding Reynolds stress model. In addition this paper introduced a method of increasing nozzle outlet velocity gradually for numercal convergence. Even though the method was simple it was efficient in view of convergent speed CPU running time computer memory storage programming etc.

  • The characteristic of jet impinging on the concave surface were analyzed through thermographic phosphor thermometry (TPT) and numerical investigation. Under a jet Reynolds number of 6600, nozzle diameters and nozzle-to-surface distances (H/d) were changed 5mm and 10mm and H/d=2 and 5. The RNG k-ε turbulence model can accurately predict the distribution of Nusselt number, compared to other models (SST k-ω, realizable k-ε). Heat transfer characteristics varied with the nozzle diameter and H/d, with a secondary peak noted at H/d =2, due to vortex-induced flow detachment and reattachment. An increase in nozzle diameter enhanced jet momentum, turbulence strength, and heat transfer.
