  • Thermal performance and flow patterns inside the closed loop pulsating heat pipe (CLPHP) were experimentally investigated. For investigating the effect of working fluids, CLPHP was filled with various working fluids including methanol, acetone and ethanol. The thermal resistance was calculated by temperatures in evaporator and condenser and flow patterns were visualized by a digital camera. The thermal resistances for all fluids were decreased as the heat increases. Flow patterns change from static slug to elongated slug flows, bulk circulation and annular flows as the heat increases. Dry-out occurs after annular flows. For reasonable comparison of thermal performances, normalized CHF, Kutateladze number (Ku), was compared. Even though ethanol has smallest CHF, Ku of ethanol is similar with that of methanol. In addition, acetone has the highest Ku that means CLPHP with acetone provides the higher thermal performance compared with CLPHP with other fluids.

  • Internal flow measurement of very low specific-speed semi-open impellers has been carried out by PIV in order to understand better the internal flow patterns that are responsible fur the unique performance of these centrifugal pumps operating in the range of very low specific speed. Two types of impellers, one equipped with six radial blades (Impeller A) and the other with four conventional backward-swept blades (Impeller B), are tested in a centrifugal pump operating at a non-dimensional specific-speed of $n_s=0.24$. Complex flow patterns captured by PIV are discussed in conjunction with the overall pump performance measured separately. It is revealed that Impeller A achieves higher effective head than Impeller B even though the flow patterns in Impeller A are more complex, exhibiting secondary flows and reverse flows in the impeller passage. It is shown that both the localized strong outward flow at the pressure side of each blade outlet and the strong outward through-flow along the suction side of each blade are responsible for the better head performance of Impeller A.

  • Flow patterns and dynamic properties of two-stage Weis-Fogh type ship propulsion mechanism are studied by a discrete vortex method. To study mutual interference between two wings, two cases are con sidered - wing motions with the same and reverse phases. The predicted flow patterns correspond to the available flow visualization results. Time histories of thrust and drag coefficients are also calculated, and the interference between the two wings are numerically clarified.

  • Three-dimensional baroclinic hydrodynamic model, BACHOM-3, is developed using ADI finite difference scheme. The model is applied to a uni-nodal standing wave in a rectagular basin. The model results for the surface elevation and velocities coincide with the analytical results. To verify the field applicability of the model and to investigate the flow patterns of the Suyoung Bay in Pusan, Korea, the model is applied to the bay. The numerically predicted velocity predicted velocity fields during spring tide at normal river flow are compared with field measurements, the comparisons show good agreement. A clockwise residual circulations at the first level (depth = 0∼2m) and the second level (depth=2∼5 m) of the central part of the bay occur, and the ebb flow is stronger than the flood flow. Computed velocity fields show that the phase difference of velocities between the surface layer and bottom layer occurs and the phase lag increases with height from the bottom. Then, the model is applied successfully for the computation of flow fields considering flood river flow and wind effects. When the wind is blowing toward the land from the sea, the flow patterns at the surface layer correspond with the wind direction, but the flow patterns at the near solid boundary of the lower layer show opposite currents to the wind direction.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of the gas flow in the engine cylinder under various intake flow conditins. The particle tracking velovimetry(PTV) was used to anlayze the gas flow pattern and flow field in the cylinder. Effects of tumble intensifying valve(TIV), swirl intensifying valve(SIV) and one-valve deactivated condition on in-cylinder flow patterns were compared with the baseline engine udner 600rpm motoring condition. In addtion, tumbel ration was estimated rwith results of in -cylinder flow fields. Base on experimental results, the tumble ration of in-cylinder flow field has the maximum value at the bottom dead center for the different four inlet conditions. In TIV condition, the tumble ration is 1.35 times larger than that of baseline engine and 1 intake valve deactivated condition is effective to improve in-cylinder swirl motion.

  • A new method is proposed to identify two-phase flow regimes in horizontal gas-liquid flow, based upon a statistical analysis of instantaneous pressure drop curves at an orifice. The probability density functions of the curves indicate distinct patterns depending upon the two-phase flow regime. The transition region also could be identified by the distribution shape of the probability density function. The statistical properties of the pressure drop are analyzed for various flow regimes and transitions. Finally, the data of flow patterns determined by the proposed method are compared with the flow pattern maps suggested by other investigators.

  • PURPOSES : The fundamental diagram provides basic information necessary in the analysis of traffic flow and highway operation. When traffic flow is congested, the density-flow points in the fundamental diagram are widely scattered and move in a stochastic manner. This paper investigates the pattern of density-flow point transitions and identifies car-following behaviors underlying the density-flow transitions. METHODS : From a microscopic analysis of 722 fundamental diagrams of NGSIM data, a total of 20 transition patterns of fundamental diagrams are identified. Prominent features of the transition patterns are explained by the behavior of the leader and follower. RESULTS : It is found out that the average speed and the speed difference between the leader and the follower critically determine the density-flow transition pattern. The density-flow path is very sensitive to the values of vehicle speed and spacing especially at low speed and high density such that most fluctuations in the fundamental diagram in the congested regime is due to the noise of speed and spacing variations. CONCLUSIONS : The result of this study suggests that the average speed, the speed difference between the leader and the follower, and the random variations of speed and spacing are dominant factors that explain the transition patterns of a fundamental diagram.

  • The present study is concerned with the flow patterns induced by various impellers in a rectangular tank. Impellers are FBT (Flat blade turbine), PBT (Pitched blade turbine), Shroud turbine, Rushton turbine, and Helical ribbon turbine types. The solutions of flows in moving reference frames require the use of 'moving' cell zone. The moving zone approaches are based on MRF (Multiple reference frame), which is a steady-state approximation and sliding method, which is an unsteady-state approximation. Numerical results using two moving zone approaches we compared with experiments by Ranade & Joshi, which have done extensive LDA measurements of the flow generated by a standard six-bladed Rushton turbine in a cylindrical baffled vessel. In this paper, we simulated the flow patterns with above-mentioned moving zone approaches and impellers. Turbulence model used is RNG $k-{\epsilon}$ model. Sliding-mesh method is more effective than MRF for simulating the rectangular tank with inlet and outlet. RNG $k-{\epsilon}$ model strongly underestimates the velocity of experimental data and velocity by Chen & Kim's model, but it seems to be correctly predicted in overall distribution.

  • Characteristics of flow regime transitions in inclined upwards gas-liquid two-phase flow have been investigated based upon a statistical analysis of instantaneous pressure drop curves through an orifice. The probability density functions of the curves indicate distinct patterns depending upon two-phase flow regime, which are very similar to those of horizontal two-phase. The dimensionless intensity of fluctuations of the pressure drops sharply change as the flow transitions such as plug-slug, pseudo slug-slug and annular-slug take place. The effects of inclination angle on the flow regime transitions have been also investigated. The results show that the method to identify the flow pattern based upon the statistical analysis of instantaneous pressure drops is suitable for inclined flow as well as horizontal flow.

  • This paper presents the results of Landsat-TM imagery applications for detecting spatial variations of the water environments in the Saemankeum (STLR) project areas. The simulated tidal flow patterns from a two -dimensional hydro - dynamic model and water quality data from STRL project were used for relationships with the satellite data. Unsupervised classification of the tidal water body reflects the overall flow patterns at a flooding tide. Regressive equations for water quality parameters were derived and used for supervised classifications. The results were found to be useful to synoptically evaluate the water environments during the construction stages of the STLR project.
