  • In this study the flow curve estimation is discussed using TANK model which is one of hydrologic models. The main interest is the accuracy of TANK model parameter estimation with respect to the sampling frequency of input data. For doing this, input data with various sampling frequencies is used to estimate model parameters. As a result, in order to generate relatively accurate flow curve, it is recommendable to measure stream flow at least every 8 days.

  • To overcome weak poinks of the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model when applied to complex turbulent flows, various modified models were proposed. But their effects are confined to special flow fields. They have still some problems. Recently, an anisotropic k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was also proposed to solve the drawback of the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. This study is concentrated on the evaluation of the anisotropic k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model by the analysis of axisymmetric swirling turbulent flow. Results show that the anisotropic k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model has scarecely the fundamentally physical mechanism of predicting the swirling structure of flow.

  • One-dimensional unsteady flow model including weir flow simulation is studied. Applicabilities of both the single channel model with local treatment of the weir overflow, and the looped-network model are studied using a test problem. It is shown that various type of weir flows including reverse flows are successfully simulated. Flow discontinuity due to the high crest elevation can also be simulated. The reverse free-flowing overflow can be simulated by the single-channel model as well as by the looped-network model.

  • A mechanistic model based on wall-attached bubble coalescence, previously developed by the authors, was extended to predict a vow high critical heat flux (CHF)in highly subcooled flow boiling, especially for high mass flux and small tube diameter conditions. In order to take into account the enhanced condensation due to high subcooling and high mass velocity in small diameter tubes, a mechanistic approach was adopted to evaluate the non-equilibrium flow quality and void fraction in the subcooled water flow boiling, with preserving the structure of the previous CHF model. Comparison of the model predictions against highly subcooled water CHF data showed relatively good agreement over a wide range of parameters. The significance of the proposed CHF model lies in its generality in applying over the entire subcooled flow boiling regime including the operating conditions of fission and fusion reactors.

  • We modeled the liquid film dryout(LFD) process for both tube and annulus which have uniformly heated vertical channels. We set phenomenological initial conditions in the model. The initial void fraction on the onset of the annular flow location is derived from the physical chum-to-annular flow criterion with the help of the drift-flux-model. The initial thermodynamic-equilibrium-quality is calculated by iteration with the flow quality to find the onset of the annular-flow location. Present model tends to predict very well at the lower exit quality but under-estimates at the higher exit quality. We found that the prediction error of the present model is gradually bigger as the inlet subcooling approaches near the saturation. We obtained excellent results for both tube and annulus channels as the mean of 0.97 and root-mean-square error of 11% for the number of 3883 experimental data on tubes, and of 0.96 and of 12% for 593 on annuli. The present model extended the applicable range to the relatively low exit quality region than previous LFD models.

  • Baroclinic hydraulic model experiments on the time-varying states of the flow pattern and water exchange in Sagami Bay were carried out based on quasi-steady state experiments on the flow pattern. For the model experiments, density changes as well as time changes in the volume transport of the upper layer were executed to investigate the flow response of the bay in the case of a sudden inflow of low density water and variable volume transport into the Sagami Bay. The results of the model experiments showed that when the volume transport was increased frontal eddies or frontal wave streamers from the Kuroshio Through Flow were transferred to the inner part of the bay along with cyclonic circulation in the bay. In addition, density boundary currents appeared and flowed along the eastern boundary of the bay. As the upper layer density decreased, frontal eddies, frontal streamers and coastal boundary density currents occurred and proceeded along the eastern boundary of the bay at a high speed.

  • PURPOSES: Used in transportation planning and traffic engineering, almost traffic simulation tools have input variable values optimized by overseas traffic flow attribution because they are almost developed in overseas country. Thus, model calibration appropriated for internal traffic flow attribution is needed to improve reliability of simulation method. METHODS : In this study, the traffic flow model calibration is based on expressways. For model calibration, it needs to define each expressway link according to attribution, thus it is classified by design speed, geometric conditions and number of lanes. And modified greenshield model is used as traffic flow model. RESULTS : The result of the traffic model calibration indicates that internal congested density is lower than overseas. And the result of analysis according to the link attribution indicates that the more design speed and number of lanes increase, the lower the minimum speed, the higher the congested density. CONCLUSIONS: In the traffic simulation tool developed in overseas, the traffic flow is different as design speed and number of lanes, but road segment don't affect traffic flow. Therefore, these results need to apply reasonably to internal traffic simulation method.

  • In this study, the numerical investigation of the flow around the SUBOFF submarine model is performed by using the Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) method which is developed based on the SST k-ω turbulence model. At the DES analysis level, complex vortical flows around the submarine model are caused mainly by the vortices due to the appendages and their interactions with the flows from the hull boundary layer and other appendages. The complexity and scale of the vortical flow obtained from the numerical simulations are highly dependent on the grid. The computed local flow properties of the submarine model are compared with the available experimental data showing a good agreement. The DES analysis more reasonably estimates the physical phenomena inherent in the experimental result in a low radius of the propeller plane where vortical flows smaller than the RANS scale are dominant.

  • This paper investigated the influence of simple support girds on flow, irrespective of having mixing vanes, in a 1 × 3 array rod bundle by using CFD methodology and the most accurate turbulence model which could reflect the actual physics of the flow was determined. In this context, a CFD model was created simulating the experimental studies on a single-phase flow [1] and the results were compared with the experimental data. In the first part of the study, influence of mesh was examined. Tetra, hybrid and poly type meshes were analyzed and convergence study was carried out on each in order to determine the most appropriate type and density. k - ε Standard and RSM LPS turbulence models were used in this section. In the second part of the study, the most appropriate turbulence model that could reflect the physics of the actual flow was investigated. RANS based turbulence models were examined using the mesh that was determined in the first part. Velocity and turbulence intensity results obtained on the upstream and downstream of the spacer grid at -3dh, +3dh and +40dh locations were compared with the experimental data. In the last section of the study, the behavior of flow through the spacer grid was examined and its prominent aspects were highlighted on the most appropriate turbulence model determined in the second part. Results of the study revealed the importance of mesh type. Hybrid mesh having the largest number of structured elements performed remarkably better than the other two on results. While comparisons of numerical and experimental results showed an overall agreement within all turbulence models, RSM LPS presented better results than the others. Lastly, physical appearance of the flow through spacer grids revealed that springs has more influence on flow than dimples and induces transient flow behaviors. As a result, flow through a simple support grid was examined and the most appropriate turbulence model reflecting the actual physics of the flow was determined.

  • Open-channel flows with submerged vegetation show two distinct flow structures in the vegetation and upper layers. That is, the flow in the vegetation layer is featured by relatively uniform mean velocity with suppressed turbulence from shear, while the flow in the upper layer is akin to that in the plain open-channel. Due to this dual characteristics, the flow has drawn many hydraulic engineers' attentions. This study compares layer-averaged models for flows with submerged vegetation. The models are, in general, classified into two-layer and three-layer models. The two-layer model divides the flow depth into vegetation and upper layers, while the three-layer model further divides the vegetation layer into inner and outer vegetation layers depending on the influence of the bottom roughness. This study compares the two-layer model and the three layer-model. It is found that the two-layer model predicts better the average value of the velocity and the prediction by the three-layer model is sensitive to Reynolds shear stress. In the three-layer model, the mean flow in the inner vegetation layer does not affect the flow seriously, which motivates the proposal of the modified two-layer model. The two-layer model, capable of predicting non-uniform mean velocity, is based on the Reynolds stress which is linear and of power form in the upper and vegetation layers, respectively. Application results reveal that the modified two-layer model predicts the mean velocity at an accuracy similar to the two- and three-layer models, but it predicts poorly in the case of very low vegetation density.
