  • This study presents the effects of temporally varied groundwater table on hydrological components such as surface runoff, evapotranspiration, and soil water content. To this end, the SWAT-MODFLOW model in which the groundwater module of SWAT is replaced with MODFLOW model has been used with a modification to enhance the coupling between the water content in soil profile and the groundwater in shallow aquifer. The variable soil layer construction technique (VSLT) is developed in the present work to represent the direct interaction of soil water and groundwater more realistically, and then the VSLT is incorporated into SWAT-MODFLOW model. In VSLT, when the simulated groundwater table rises within the soil zone, the soil layers below the water table is regarded as a portion of the shallow aquifer, so that those layers are excluded from the initially defined soil zone and are governed by the MODFLOW. From the simulation tests for the Musim river basin, the improved SWAT-MODFLOW model with VSLT is found to correctly evaluate the spatial distributions of overland flow, soil moisture, evapotranspiration according to the groundwater table variation.

  • For the design of hydraulic structures, the design flood discharge corresponding to a specific frequency is generally used by using the design storm calculated according to the rainfall-runoff relationship. In the past, empirical equations such as rational equations were used to calculate the peak flow rate. However, as the duration of rainfall is prolonged, the outflow patterns are different from the actual events, so the accuracy of the temporal distribution of the probability rainfall becomes important. In the present work, Huff's quartile method is used for the temporal distribution of rainfall, and the third quartile is generally used. The regression equation for Huff's quadratic curve applies a sixth order polynomial equation because of its high accuracy throughout the duration of rainfall. However, in statistical modeling, the regression equation needs to be concise in accordance with the principle of simplicity, and it is necessary to determine the regression coefficient based on the statistical significance level. Therefore, in this study, the statistical significance test for regression equation for temporal distribution of the Huff's quartile method, which is used as the temporal distribution method of design rainfall, is conducted for 69 rainfall observation stations under the jurisdiction of the Korea Meteorological Administration. It is statistically significant that the regression equation of the Huff's quartile method can be considered only up to the 4th order polynomial equation, as the regression coefficient is significant in most of the 69 rainfall observation stations.

  • Soil-water characteristic curve, which is called soil retention curve, is required to explore water flows in unsaturated soils, relative permeability of water in multi-phase fluids flow, and change to stiffness and volume of soils. Thus, the understanding of soil-water characteristic curves of soils help us explore the behavior of soils inclduing fluids. Biopolymers are environmental-friendly materials, which can be completely degraded by microbes and have been believed not to affect the nature. Thus, various biopolymers such as deacetylated power, polyethylene oxide, xanthan gum, alginic acid sodium salt, and polyacrylic acid have been studies for the application to soil remediation, soil improvement, and enhanced oil recovery. PAA (polyacrylic acid) is one of biopolymers, which have shown a great effect in enhanced oil recovery as well as soil remediation because of the improvement of water-flood performance by mobility control. The study on soil-water characteristic curves of sandy soils containing PAA (polyacrylic acid) has been conducted through experimentations and theoretical models. The results show that both capillary entry pressure and residual water saturation dramatically increase according to the increased concentration of PAA (polyacrylic acid). Also, soil-water characteristic curves by theoretical models are quite well consistent with the results by experimental studies. Thus, soil-water characteristic curves of sandy soils containing biopolymers such as PAA (polyacrylic acid) can be estimated using fitting parameters for the theoretical model.

  • To understand the variation and transport pattern of suspended matters, salinity, tidal current and suspended matters in semiclosed Muan Bay have been monitored during winter and summer. The suspended matters show considerably seasonal variations with low concentration and homogeneity in the water column during winter season, but with high concentration and layering during summer season. Particularly, during summer season, the freshwater and the suspended matters influxed by the gate operation of the Youngsan River sea-dike are transported northward in accordance with the would flow into the inner-bay by relaxed flood currents after the construction of sea-dike and sea-walls in the Mokpo coastal zone. But, in the south bay-mouth, those matters outflow through the bay-mouth, resulting from tidal ebb dominance and asymmetry in the west bay-mouth. The residual suspended matter flux is much higher in the south bay-mouth(-0.0955kg/m ${\cdot}$ sec) than that of west bay-mouth(0.0078kg1m ${\cdot}$ sec). Accordingly, The Muan Bay is interpreted as erosion-dominated environments, and the erosion somewhat progresses in the intertidal flat of the bay.

  • Most embankment of the reservoirs (99.1 %) have been constructed in the earth filled type in Korea because the construction of this type is less expensive and simpler than others such as concrete one. However, it has to be reinforced the slope to prevent the breach due to overtopping or piping under unexpected flood conditions. This study has been analyzed the retardation effect using three types (L, T, $L^*$ shape) of stiffener in order to reinforce embankment when they are collapsed by overtopping flow. Experimental results showed that L-type stiffener is the most effective in delaying the breaching of embankment and reducing the soil erosion when compared with others. The reinforced embankment breaching showed that time delay was occurred about 1.73 to 2.29 times and the peak flowrate was reduced compared to non-stiffener embankments due to energy dissipation by collision and less soil erosion. The embankment breaching mostly leads to major damages because of the lack of repair time. Thus, since these stiffeners can resist the rapid breach, it would be possible to earn the time to emergency repair and lifesaving, as well as reduction of damages of embankment in downward region with decreasing peak flowrate. Results from this study would be used for the basis when establishing the emergency action plan for the reservoirs on the verge of hazard.

  • The ECOM3D is used to study the circulation characteristics and density current from the Sumjin River runoff in the Kwangyang Estuarine System, South Sea, Korea. Annual mean value of $120m^3/s$ was imposed from the Sumjin River. The numerical model results in terms of tidal height, current and salinity field show satisfactory with skill scores over 90%. The current velocity showed the range of 1~2.5 m/s during flood and ebb phases. In particular, very strong flow occur in the narrow Channels of Noryang, Daebang and Changson exceeding over 2.0 m/s. The tidal residual currents in the various locations in the Kwangyang Estuary showed the range of 1~21 cm/s, The density-driven current through the Yeosu and Noryang Channels are about 12 cm/s and 4 cm/s, respectively. The current path through the Yeosu Channel is deflected toward west Bank. Based on budget analysis of the volume flux, the volume flux through the Yeosu Channel and the Noryang Channel were estimated to be 97.4 and $22.1m^3/s$ accounting for the 81.5% and 18.5% of total flux, respectively.

  • An analytical diffusion model for flood routing with backwater effects and lateral flows is developed. The basic diffusion equation is linearized about an average depth of (H + h), and is solved using the boundary conditons which take into account the effects of backwater and lateral flows. Scouring phenomenon around pier which affects on the support function of pier and the stabilization if river bed is a complex problem depending on flow properties and river bed state as well as pier geometry. therefore, there is no uniting theory at present which would enable the designer to estimate, with confidence, the depth of scour at bridge piers. The various methods used in erosion control are collectively called upstream engineering, HEC-RAS Model, underwater blasting. They consist of reforestation, check-dam construction, planting of burned-over areas, contour plowing and regulation of crop and grazing practices. Also included are measures for proper treatment of high embankments and cuts and stabilization of streambanks by planting or by revetment construction. One phase of reforestation that may be applied near a reservoir is planting of vegetation screens. Such screens, planted on the flats adjacent to the normal stream channel at the head of a reservoir, reduce the velocity of silt-laden storm inflows that inundate these areas. This stilling action causes extensive deposition to occur before the silt reaches the main cavity of the reservoir.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the quantitative change of water resources using RMS(Remote Monitoring System) which takes real time data with high reliability. Also, the characteristic of stormwater runoff was understood by the application of the above system for three streams (Jiam, Yulmun, and Gongji stream) in Chuncheon City. The detailed results of these studies are as follows; RMS(Remote Monitoring System) was constructed by the combination of the automatic water-level meter, which measures water-level of streams at all times, and the wireless communication system sending real-time data from the meter. This system is used to evaluate the stormwater runoff in watersheds and the quantitative changes of streams. It is possible to overcome the limit of field investigations needed, which takes a lot of manpower and time, and it is very efficient to provide the reliable flowrate data. Also, it can be applied to the disaster prevention system for flood because the change of flowrate in stream is monitored at real-time. For 3 streams with different watershed characteristics, correlation equations induced from the relation analysis results. In terms of the relation between water-level and flowrate, flowrate was increased rapidly as the water-level rises in case of small watershed and steep slope. The application results of the proposed system for 3 streams (Jiam, Yulmun, Gongji) in Chuncheon city are as follows; The remote monitoring system was very useful for acquisition of the flow rate in stream that are basic data to understand pollutants runoff in watershed. In case of no-rainy day, the runoff ratio for pollutant loading rate was the highest level in Yulmun stream(BOD:2.3%, TN:20.2%, TP:1.2%). So, it shows the management of pollution source is needed such as rehabilitation of sewer line. Runoff ratio of total phosphorus by rainfall in Gongji watershed was increased about 19 times than no-rainy day, which is estimated as the influence of sewer overflow.

  • Since the 1960s, many rivers have been polluted and destroyed due to river repair projects for economic development and the covering of small rivers due to urbanization. Many studies have analyzed rivers using measured river topographic factors, but surveying is not easy when the flow rate changes rapidly, such as during a flood. In addition, the previous research has been mainly about the cross section of a river, so information on the longitudinal profile is insufficient. This research used informational entropy theory to obtain an equation that can calculate the average river slope, river slope, and river longitudinal elevation for a river basin in real time. The applicability was analyzed through comparison with measured data of a river's characteristic factors obtained from a river plan. The parameters were calculated using informational entropy theory, nonlinear regression analysis, and actual data. The longitudinal elevation entropy equation for each stream was then calculated, and so was the average river slope. All of the values were over 0.96, so it seems that reliable results can be obtained when calculating river characteristic factors.

  • Recently, existing river improvement methods for flood control purpose have changed into nature friendly river improvement methods and the efforts to improve the river environment including river restoration have been made, and close-to-nature river improvement and nature friendly river restoration are actively conducted all over the country. In the present situation where various revetment methods are used after the introduction of the concept of close-to-nature river improvement, the environmental characteristics of rivers need to be considered to apply more suitable revetment methods. Therefore, as a precedent study for the development of revetment evaluation techniques and methods for close-to-nature river improvement, the present study suggested evaluation techniques using detailed survey items through field survey. Evaluation items of hydraulic stability consist of mode of streamline, stream bed gradient, flow velocity and tractive force ratio and those of environmental efficiency consist of revetment of vegetation, state of river water, land use of the terrace land on the river, vegetation and materials of the terrace land on the river. Each item was graded with the point 1 through 5. Hydraulic stability and environmental efficiency was evaluated by the points which were averaged in each items. As the result of the application of the proposed evaluation technique, it was found that a number of existing revetments excessively focus on hydraulic stability with little consideration about environmental term. It is expected that the proposed technique in the present study can be used as a base for providing guidelines to construct the design and construction of revetments in the future.
