  • In this study, past method and recent method for flood discharge with domestic multi-purpose dams in Korea were compared and analyzed with respect to the scale of watershed. Rainfall depth, temporal distribution, effective rainfall, rainfall-runoff model, parameter estimation and base flow were selected as the principal factors affecting flood discharge and effects on flood discharge were analyzed quantitatively by using sensitivity analysis. The results showed that the flood discharges calculated by past and recent method increased and decreased with a wide range of discharge with respect to the scale of watershed. The reason for decrease of flood discharge is the exchange of temporal distribution pattern of rainfall and the principal reason for increase of flood discharge are the increase of rainfall depth by unusual weather phenomena and the difference of estimation method of parameters of unit hydrograph.

  • Recently, the natural disaster has occurred as a heavy snow fall, drought and flood by abnormal weather. The damage of human and property by flood is most serious problem among those natural disaster. In order to prepare structural or non-structural measure, to estimate exact flood discharge is important element. This study analyze frequency of hour-unit rainfall data and estimate probability flood discharge by HEC-HMS as changing method of runoff analysis. Also, this study analyze the peak flood discharge sensibility according to Curve Number(CN) with the return period. As a result of estimation of probability flood discharge with the variety CN, to select Antecedent Moisture To select suitable condition(AMC) is important parameter because flood discharge is estimated 40% gap according to AMC.

  • This research aims at comparing the accuracy of flood discharge estimation. For this, we focused on the Oedo watershed of Jeju Island and compared flood discharge by analyzing the values as follows: (1) the concentration of the lumped model (HEC-HMS) and distributed model (Vflo), and (2) the in-situ data using Fixed Surface Image Velocimetry (FSIV). The flood discharge estimation from the HEC-HMS model is slightly larger than the Vflo model results. This result shows that the estimations of the HEC-HMS are larger than the flood discharge data by 4.43 to 36.24% and that of the Vflo are larger by 8.49 to 11%. In terms of the error analysis at the peak discharge occurrence time of each mapping, HEC-HMS is one hour later than the measured data, but Vflo is almost the same as the measured data.

  • Channel form discharge which determines shape and character of a channel is named as dominant discharge. Assuming that fixed discharge flows in the fluvial plain for a long time, it is channel form discharge of a certain channel if it changes the fluvial plain into shape of the channel. Channel form discharge can be demonstrated by concept of bankfull or effective discharge. 1.01, 1.58, 2, 2.33 and 5 year flood discharge were used in order to determine channel form discharge. Each frequency discharge was determined by 80 year flood discharge by a research result conducted by Kim and Won. 1.01 year frequency discharge was selected as the most similar discharge to bankfull discharge. 1.58 year frequency discharge habitually used in Korea exceeded bankfull discharge.

  • The peak flood discharge at a downstream station and the flood travel time between a pair of dams due to a specific flood release from the upper reservoir are computed using a hydraulic river channel routing method. The study covered the whole large reservoir system in the Han River, Korea. The computed flood discharges and the travel times between dams were correlated with the duration and the magnitude of flood release rate at the upstream reservoir, and hence a multiple regression model is proposed for each river reach between a pair of dams. The peak flood discharge at a downstream location can be converted to the peak flood stage by a rating curve. Hence, the proposed regression model could be used to forecast the peak flood stage at a downstream location and the flood travel time between dams using the information on the flood travel time, release rate and duration from the upper dam.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the critical flood discharge and flash flood trigger rainfall for alarm system providing for a flash flood in mountainous area. The flash flood need non-linear approaching method, because rainfall-runoff is nonlinear and it is difficult to explain the existing linear rainfall-runoff. Hydrological characteristics would be utilized to apply such as hydrologic modelling or basin management. This study was effectively estimated a topographic characteristic factor of basin using the GIS. Especially, decided stream order using GIS at stream order decision that is important for input variable of GCIUH. A flash floods defined as a flood which follows shortly after a heavy or excessive rainfall event, with a few hours. In this study, we gave a definition that a critical flood for alarm is the flood when valley depth judging dangerous depth is over 0.5m depth from the bottom of channel. Result that calculate threshold discharge to use GCIUH, at the Mureung valley basin, flash flood trigger rainfall was 16.34mm in the first 20minutes when the threshold discharge was $14.54m^3/sec$.

  • In this study, We proposed a method to estimate the design flood by area ratio in an ungauged basin. For that, the discharge parameters was determined by calibration of observed data at the watershed outlet and then peak flow was estimated by area ratio. In order to verify suggested method, peak flow was compared the observed discharge of the small river basin and the design flood discharge of river implementation projects. The results were summarized as follows. As a result of comparing the discharge by the area ratio and observed discharge, the difference of peak flows were analysed 14 ~ 25%. When the discharge calculated with area ratio of small river was compared with the design flood discharge of river implementation projects, the relative error was analyzed to be less than 20%. It means that suggested method in this study is appropriate.

  • An abnormal storm by the typhoon of RUSA in 2002th year was broken out with tremendous flood demages and inundations on the basin of Chogangcheon located in the upper middle part of Guem river's upstream. This flood could not be engaged because it was so big that the stage engaging Songcheon station stuck to Songcheon bridge was destroyed by submerging. In this study the quantity of the flood was calculated by use of Manning's equation and suitable roughness coefficient was suggested.

  • Reservoir operators and managers need to present a rational basis of determining releases for a flood event. This study divides a forecasted flood hydrograph by two parts on the basis of non-damaging discharge, which consists of one part con, trolled by non-damaging discharge and another controlled by using flood control storage of the reservoir. In case of using flood control storage, a new reservoir operation method. called TRF (Transformed Reservoir Flood) ROM, is suggested for the operating rules during a flood to consider the reservoir security as well as the operational efficiency. This paper presents an application of the methodology to the operation of a single multipurpose reservoir at the Taechong Dam during flood and the results analyzed.alyzed.
