In this study, to investigate the effects of omitting low-amplitude cycles from a flight-simulation loading, crack growth tests are conducted on 2124-T851 aluminum alloy specimens. Three test spectra are generated by omitting small load ranges as counted by the rain-flow count method. The crack growth test results are compared with the data obtained from the flight-simulation loading. The experimental results show that omission of the load ranges below 5% of the maximum load does not significantly affect crack growth behavior, because these are below the initial stress intensity factor range. However, in the case of omitting the load ranges below 15% of the maximum load, crack growth rates decrease, and therefore crack growth curve deviates from the crack growth data under the flight-simulation loading. To optimize the load range that can be omitted, crack growth curves are simulated by the stochastic crack growth model. The prediction shows that the omission level can be extended to 8% of the maximum load and test time can be reduced by 59%.
In this paper, a method for estimating the location of a quadcopter is proposed by applying an EKF-SLAM algorithm to its flight control, to autonomously control the flight of an unmanned quadcopter. The usefulness of this method is validated through simulations. For autonomously flying the unmanned quadcopter, an algorithm is required to estimate its accurate location, and various approaches exist for this. Among them, SLAM, which has seldom been applied to the quadcopter flight control, was applied in this study to simulate a system that estimates flight trajectories of the quadcopter.

The HLA system architecture, prescribed in IEEE-1516, is a core fundamental technology to build a complex simulation network system which is composed of a number of individual simulation developed for different purposes. The model structure of flight simulation with expansibility and compatability was suggested in this thesis by showing how to implement HLA to a commercial flight simulation software and how the system implemented with HLA to work. In addition, it was judged whether real-time can be guaranteed implementing to a simulation system with integrity through analysis of flight information data collected by comparing real-time simulation based on HLA with commercial flight simulation.

The study considers the high maneuverability flight and path optimization is conducted to investigate the appropriate generation of the lift and thrust considering the angle of the stroke plane. The path optimization problem is defined according to the various purposes of the high maneuverability flight. The flying purposes are to maximize thrust force, lift force and both lift and thrust forces. The flapping motion of the airfoil is made by a combined sinusoidal plunging and pitching motion in each problem. The optimization process is carried out by using well-defined surrogate models. The surrogate model is determined by the results of two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics analysis. The Kriging method is used to make the surrogate model and a genetic algorithm is utilized to optimize the surrogate model. The optimization results show the flapping motions for the high maneuverable flight. The effects on the generation of lift and thrust forces are confirmed by analyzing the vortex.

A variant of the magnetoplasma jet engine (magjet) is here proposed for airbreathing flight in the hypersonic regime. As shown in Figure 1, the engine consists of two distinct ducts: the high-speed duct, in which power is added electromagnetically to the incoming air by a momentum addition device, and the fuel cell duct in which the flow stagnation temperature is reduced by extracting energy through the use of a magnetoplas-madynamic (MPD) generator. The power generated is then used to accelerate the flow exiting the fuel cells with a fraction bypassed to the high-speed duct. The analysis is performed using a quasi one-dimensional model neglecting the Hall and ion slip effects, and fix-ing the fuel cell efficiency to 0.6. Results obtained show that the specific impulse of the magjet is at least equal to and up to 3 times the one of a turbojet, ram-jet, or scramjet in their respective flight Mach number range. Should the air stagnation temperature in the fuel cell compartment not exceed 5 times the incoming air static temperature, the maximal flight Mach number possible would vary between 6.5 and 15 for a magnitude of the ratio between the Joule heating and the work interaction in the MPD generator varied between 0.25 and 0.01, respectively. Increasing the mass flow rate ratio between the high speed and fuel cell ducts from 0.2 to 20 increases the engine efficiency by as much as 3 times in the lower supersonic range, while resulting in a less than 10% increase for a flight Mach number exceeding 8.

The effect of Pre-cooled Turbojet Engine installation and nozzle exhaust jet on Hypersonic Turbojet EXperimental aircraft(HYTEX aircraft) were investigated by three-dimensional numerical analyses to obtain aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft during its in-flight condition. First, simulations of wind tunnel experiment using small scale model of the aircraft with and without the rectangular duct reproducing engine was performed at M=5.1 condition in order to validate the calculation code. Here, good agreements with experimental data were obtained regarding centerline wall pressures on the aircraft and aerodynamic coefficients of forces and moments acting on the aircraft. Next, full scale integrated analysis of the aircraft and the engine were conducted for flight Mach numbers of M=5.0, 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, and 2.0. Increasing the angle of attack $\alpha$ of the aircraft in M=5.0 flight increased the mass flow rate of the air captured at the intake due to pre-compression effect of the nose shockwave, also increasing the thrust obtained at the engine plug nozzle. Sufficient thrust for acceleration were obtained at $\alpha=3$ and 5 degrees. Increase of flight Mach number at $\alpha=0$ degrees resulted in decrease of mass flow rate captured at the engine intake, and thus decrease in thrust at the nozzle. The thrust was sufficient for acceleration at M=3.5 and lower cases. Lift force on the aircraft was increased by the integration of engine on the aircraft for all varying angles of attack or flight Mach numbers. However, the slope of lift increase when increasing flight Mach number showed decrease as flight Mach number reach to M=5.0, due to the separation shockwave at the upper surface of the aircraft. Pitch moment of the aircraft was not affected by the installation of the engines for all angles of attack at M=5.0 condition. In low Mach number cases at $\alpha=0$ degrees, installation of the engines increased the pitch moment compared to no engine configuration. Installation of the engines increased the frictional drag on the aircraft, and its percentage to the total drag ranged between 30-50% for varying angle of attack in M=5.0 flight.
A UAV(unmanned aerial vehicle) requires higher reliability for external effects such as electromagnetic interference because a UAV is operated by pre-designed programs that are not under human control. The design of a small UAV with a complete resistance against the external effects, however, is difficult because of its weight and size limitation. In this circumstance, a conventional small UAV dropped to the ground when an external effect caused the rebooting of the flight-control computer(FCC); therefore, this paper presents a novel algorithm for the improvement of the flight safety of a small UAV. The proposed algorithm consists of three steps. The first step comprises the calibration of the navigation equipment and validation of the calibrated data. The second step is the storage of the calibration data from the UAV take-off. The third step is the restoration of the calibration data when the UAV is in flight and FCC has been rebooted. The experiment results show that the flight-control system can be safely operated upon the rebooting of the FCC.

For many years the development and verification of on-board flight software have been essentially performed on STB (Software Test Bed) environments which consist of real hardware in KARI. During development of on-board flight software on STB, we experienced many difficulties such as the late delivery of target hardware and limitation to access STB simultaneously by multiple developers. And it takes too much time and cost to build up multiple STBs. In order to successfully resolve this kind of problems, the software-based spacecraft simulator has been developed. The simulator emulates the on-board computer, I/O modules and power controller units and it supports the debugging and test facilities to software engineers for developing flight software. Also the flight software can be loaded without any modification and can be executed as pseudo real-time. This paper presents the architecture and design of software-based spacecraft simulator, and flight software development and verification under this environment.
An optimal flight motion simulator path generation method is proposed for hardware in the loop simulation of high maneuverable missile. The proposed method consists of open loop and closed loop path calculation algorithm based on the energy optimal control strategies. The optimal angle command is able to protect the simulator from high acceleration shock at initial control phase.
A mechanism of hovering flight of small insects which is called the Weis-Fogh mechanism is applied to ship propulsion. A model of the propulsion mechanism is based on a two-dimensional model of the Weis-Fogh mechanism and consists of one or two wings in a square channel. A model ship equipped with this propulsion mechanism was made, and working tests were performed in a sea. The model ship sailed very smoothly and the moving speed of the wing was small compared with the advancing speed of the ship.
