  • Experimental and numerical studies are carried out for inner flow of small gas turbine engine combustor at normal operating altitude and velocity. First of all inner flow and combustion phenomenon without a load is analyzed for understanding with various back pressure condition due to flight mode of smart UAV.

  • This paper investigates the off-design performance of methane-fueled air turbo ramjet(ATR) engine in subsonic flight speed range. The ATR engine was modeled and simulated numerically. Each component was modeled to enable their off-design calculation. Compressor operating point was determined by flow matching with nozzle, and turbine by work matching. The ATR engine exhibited quite different off-design behavior compared to the conventional gas turbine engine.

  • As a kind of application of laser propulsion, air-breathing laser-spike engine can be designed for aircraft in atmospheric flight. Laser-spike engine generates thrust using the blast wave induced by laser energy instead of combustion process. And this engine use air as propellant, therefore, it need no on board propellant. For experimental study, supersonic wind tunnel and spark generator were used. Flow visualization was performed using 2-dimensional laser-spike engine model And numerical simulation of the corresponding case for the experiment was done and compared with experimental case. Detailed results will be discussed at the presentation.

  • A survey is offered of the present status of microaluminized propellants industrially used worldwide in most space applications, but new directions are also pointed out making profitable use of the nanoaluminized propellants currently tested in many laboratories. Different industrial- and research-type of solid rocket propellants, mainly but not only, of the well-known family oxidizer/Al/HTPB(oxidizer being AP, AN or a mixture of the two) were experimentally analyzed at the Space Propulsion Laboratory of Politecnico di Milano. In general, they feature the same nominal composition but implement different grain size distributions of the oxidizer or metal fuel. The basic properties of all formulations were compared to that of a standard propellant already certified for flight.

  • An innovative Panel ExTension SATellite(PETSAT) and propulsion system for PETSAT, are presented in this paper. First, we outline what PETSAT is. Next, based on PETSAT ethos, design policy of the propulsion system is provided. According to the policy, we designed propulsion system and concretely estimated and assembled mono-propellant and bi-propellant systems, and it indicated that mono-propellant propulsion with 50-60 seconds of specific impulse and 1 N of thrust is probable. In the case of bi-propellant, 120-150 seconds of specific impulse is valid even based on the design policy. We conducted captive tests of mono-propellant and bi-propellant propulsions with a breadboard model of propulsion system for PETSAT, and obtained good operations and performances. Based on the test results, we designed and manufactured flight model propulsion system for PETSAT. We are planning to demonstrate it in SOHLA-2L project progressed by the Space Oriented Higashiosaka Leading Association(SOHLA). SOHLA-2L will be the first on-orbit demonstrator of PETSAT in 2008.

Performance Simulation of a Ramjet Using Visual C++ Program

  • This paper presents on research findings of how Visual C++ program can be used to generate codes capable of performing ramjet engine simulation To understand the diversity and applicability of this tool an arbitrary ramjet model will be considered for which generated output values will be compared with those from a commercial program GASTURB 9 iterated under the same input parameters. Several governing thermodynamic equations will first be discussed in order that we understand the fundamental idea behind values printed out on the GUI. C++ compiler was chosen as a tool of use due to its availability, ease of use, ability to compute functions faster and uniquely possible to make a stand alone GUI executable in DOS mode. The program is developed in such a way that given the ambient flight conditions, burner exit temperature and several geometry areas the program generates its own input values used in the succeeding stations. A close resemblance of output values that define performance and thermodynamic state of the engine was realized between GASTURB 9 and using this code made from C++ compiler.

  • An numerical investigation of the flow characteristics inside a diffusing S-duct inlet with and without vortex generators(VGs) was conducted. The primary discussion herein focuses on development of secondary flow in the S-duct with and without VGs, pressure recovery and distortion at the exit are also discussed. Full three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved using finite volume method and $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is employed. In order to validate the credibility of the numerical methods, predicted results of surface pressure are compared with flight test for the S-duct inlet without VGs, and it shows fairly good agreement. The result shows that VGs alter the flow characteristics in the S-duct and are effective in reducing distortion and ineffective in improving pressure recovery.

  • A TBCC(Turbine Based Combined Cycle) engine performance design method for reusable launch vehicles flying both in subsonic and supersonic regime was proposed. The TBCC consists of turbo jet engines and ramjet engines, operating individually or together according to operation schedule. The performance scheme of turbojet and ramjet was validated and the combined engine performance of the TBCC at a typical flight condition was analyzed.

  • A test range for a 75tf class gas generator cycle liquid propellant rocket engine is defined. The engine system test range is defined by the performance variation during flight, the dispersion after engine calibration, and additional margin. The component development test range includes the operation range corresponding to the engine system test range and the component performance margin.

  • This paper describes the development status of rocket engine test facility for the performance evaluation of liquid rocket engine of KSLV-II 1st stage. Design specification and composition of rocket engine test facility are suggested based on the design requirements. The results of the basic design of rocket engine test facility will be used as base data for the detail design and construction of rocket engine ground test facility of KSLV-II 75tonf liquid rocket engine.
