  • The flight test comes at the end of the aircraft development process and is an unique part. The purposes of the flight test are to evaluate the characteristics of the aircraft and validate its design in the real operating environment. Atmospheric considerations are key elements, when the planner of flight test establishes the flight test planning. The primary objective of atmospheric considerations is to ensure safety of the vehicle. The planning through atmospheric considerations can minimize flight cancellations caused by severe weather. In this paper, we present a program for flight suitability distinction, and develop a program for calculation of available sorties.

  • In this study, for development of the MDO (Multi Disciplinary Optimization) framework, the flight dynamic characteristic parameters of the ChangGong-91, a light aircraft, were extracted by an analytical method based on various semi-empirical methods, and the flight test method was compared and evaluated. The semi-empirical analysis methods for comparative subjects were the Perkins method, McCormick method, and Smetana method. The major stability/control derivatives and dynamic factors were calculated, using each method. As the comparison criteria, the flight test derivative estimates and dynamic factors were processed, using the output error method. Additionally, the flight characteristics of the light aircraft were analyzed and evaluated according to the provisions of the Korean Airworthiness Standard (KAS) of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and MIL-F-8785C for the U.S. military.

  • Recently, crimes using drones, one of the IoT industries have been continuously reported. In particular, drones are characterized by easy access and free movement, so they are used for various crimes such as transporting explosives, transporting drugs, and illegal recording. In order to analyze and investigate these criminal acts, drone forensic research is highly emphasized. Media data, PII, and flight records are digital forensic artifacts that can be acquired from drones, in particluar flight records are important artifacts since they can be used to trace drone activities. Therefore, in this paper, the characteristics of the deleted flight record files of DJI drones are presented and verified using the Phantom3, Phantom4 andMini2 models, two drones with differences in characteristics. Additionally, the recovery level is analyzed using the flight record file characteristics, and lastly, drones with the capacity to recover flight records for each drone model and drone models without it are classified.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop questionnaire items for the Pilot Aptitude Personality Test(PAPT) which can predict the flight training achievement through personality and personal characteristics. To do this, we investigated the personality traits required to successfully conduct flight training for 30 flight instructors as a subject. The results were as follows: motivation, concentration, concentration, situational awareness, and concentration. Based on this, preliminary 300-item questionnaire was prepared by combining the existing studies related to pilot aptitude. Survey was conducted using preliminary questionnaire for 152 student pilots as a subject. As a result of the correlation analysis between the results of the questionnaire and the flight training, 16 questions were derived. Finally, factor analysis showed that the final 14 questionnaire items were confirmed. The internal concept of an item is categorized as personality, perception, and motivation. This study suggests that the pilot aptitude should be viewed from an extended point of view by analyzing individual characteristics and pilot aptitude in relation to flight training achievement.

  • It is very difficult to acquire high-fidelity flight test data for small airplanes such as typical unmanned aerial vehicles because MEMS-type small sensors used in the tests do not present reliable data in general. Besides, it is not practical to conduct expensive flight tests for low-cost small airplanes in order to simulate their flight characteristics. A practical approach to obtain acceptable flight data, including stability and control derivatives and data of weight and balance, is proposed in this study. Aircraft design software such as Darcorp's AAA is used to generate aerodynamic data for small airplanes, and moments of inertia are calculated using CATIA, structural design software. These flight data from simulation software are evaluated subjectively and tailored using simulation flight by experienced pilots, based on the certified procedures in FAA AC 120-45A and 40B, which are used for manned airplane simulators.

  • This paper focuses on aerodynamic and inertial modeling of the propeller for its applications in flight dynamics analyses of a propeller-driven airplane. Unsteady aerodynamic and inertial loads generated by the propeller are formulated using the blade element method, where the local velocity and acceleration vectors for each blade element are obtained from exact kinematic relations for general maneuvering conditions. Vortex theory is applied to obtain the flow velocities induced by the propeller wake, which are used in the computation of the aerodynamic forces and moments generated by the propeller and other aerodynamic surfaces. The vortex lattice method is adopted to obtain the induced velocity over the wing and empennage components and the related influence coefficients are computed, taking into account the propeller induced velocities by tracing the wake trajectory trailing from each of the propeller blades. Aerodynamic forces and moments of the fuselage and other aerodynamic surfaces are computed by using the wind tunnel database and applying strip theory to incorporate viscous flow effects. The propeller models proposed in this paper are applied to predict isolated propeller performances under steady flight conditions. Trimmed level forward and turn flights are analyzed to investigate the effects of the propeller on the flight characteristics of a propeller-driven light-sports airplane. Flight test results for a series of maneuvering flights using a scaled model are employed to run the flight dynamic analysis program for the proposed propeller models. The simulations are compared with the flight test results to validate the usefulness of the approach. The resultant good correlations between the two data sets shows the propeller models proposed in this paper can predict flight characteristics with good accuracy.

  • Recently, domestic small airport development plans are being promoted centering on islands, and among them, Baengnyeong Island Airport is located very close to North Korea due to its geographical characteristics. In particular, since it is located in the P-518, which is prohibited airspace, it is essential to configure the arrival/departure flight procedure route similarly to the current ship in terms of securing flight safety. Therefore, in this study, a plan for airport location and facility scale was proposed by focusing on the runway operated for the purpose of aircraft operation through consultations with the Ministry of National Defense. It was proposed to meet the standards of the Airport Facility Act as an airport dedicated to domestic flights for airside facilities such as runway length and direction, target aircraft, landing pad, apron, runway and taxiway width appropriate for the topographical characteristics of Baengnyeong Island. As a result, the flight procedure is generally established as a two-way visual flight, but the 10-way arrival/departure procedure was planned to be changed to an instrument (non-precision) according to the specificity of the region. In addition, a flight procedure was established and presented for safe and systematic operation by reflecting the changes in airport facility size (landing pad, runway end safety area, etc.) following the change in instrument flight procedure in the visual flight procedure.
