  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive neural control method to solve this problem. It is assumed that the model uncertainties of the robots dynamics, joint flexibility, and motor dynamics are unknown. The dynamic surface design method is applied, and all uncertainties in the robot and motor dynamics are compensated by using the adaptive function approximation technique. Simulation results for three-link electrically driven flexible-joint (EDFJ) manipulators are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control system.

  • Suppressing residual vibrations of flexible materials cheaply is an important issue to increase productivity of automated factory using wafer or glass handling robots. In this paper, we present Linux/RTAI-based implementation of input shaping control for reducing residual vibrations of a mechanical system. Experimental results show that residual vibrations of the mechanical system are reduced up to 82% at a point-to-point linear motion.

  • Robots utilized in the field of welfare or agriculture should be light in weight and flexible in structure. A pneumatic actuator has properties such that it is more powerful compared with a motor of same weight, and that it is flexible, clean and unexplosive. In this paper we propose a new structure of the pneumatic actuator with two-degree-of-freedom. By using proposed pneumatic actuators, we can easily construct multi-degree-of-freedom pneumatic manipulators. Here we constructed a fourteen-degree-of-freedom pneumatic dual manipulator. The performance of the dual manipulators is confirmed through experiments for ball-handling with impedance control. In the experiments several control schemes, including the decentralized control and the simple adaptive control (SAC), were used. The results show that a flexibility of the pneumatic actuator is appropriate to accomplish the coordinative motion of the right and left arms of the robot.

  • An analytical and experimental investigation is made to the dynamic responese of a cantilever with a tip mass that models some of the basic phenomena involved in the response of a flexible manipulator with a tip mass on its free end under the given rotating motion. The system equation is derived from the Hamilton's principle on the basis of the Euler-Bernoulli hypothesis and an approximate solution is obtained from model analysis using Galerkin's method for the vibation response of the system subjected to a sudden stop after an impulsive rotation. Experiment was performed to verify the validity of the theoretical analysis. Results are given for the vibration amplitude of the free end with respect to tip mass ratio, non-dimensionalized rotating velocity, rotating angle and non- dimensionalized hub length. The rotating condition to minimize the vibration amplitude of the free end can be determined for the given basic paramenters.

  • This study proposes a new approach to implimentation of robust control and torque control response analysis based on monitoring simulator for smart factory. According to the physical properties of a flexible manipulator, a two time-scale approach, namely, singular perturbation ap proach, is further utilized for thorough analysis and general controller design. It is shown that asymptotic motional tracking can be effectively achieved, whereas the force regulation errors can be made arbitrarily small. For demonstration of the proposed technology performance, experiments of a eight joint flexible manipulator are performed for the proposed control method, and the reliability of proposed control results are illustrated based on monitoring simulator.

  • This paper presents an under-actuated robotic hand inspired by the ligamentous structure of the human hand for a prosthetic application. The joint mechanisms are based on the concept of a tensegrity structure formed by elastic strings. These rigid bodies and elastic strings in the mechanism emulate the phalanx bones and primary ligaments found in human finger joints. As a result, the proposed hand inherently possesses compliant characteristics, ensuring robust adaptability during grasping and when interacting with physical environments. For the practical implementation of the tensegrity-based joint mechanism, we detail the installation of the strings and the routing of the driving tendon, which are related to extension and flexion, respectively. Additionally, we have designed the palm structure of the proposed hand to facilitate opposition and tripod grips between the fingers and thumb, taking into account the transverse arch of the human palm. In conclusion, we tested a prototype of the proposed hand to evaluate its motion and grasping capabilities.

  • Modular snake-like robots are robust for failure and have flexible locomotion for environments, but are difficult to control. Various phase and evolutionary approaches for modular robots have been studied for many years, but there are few comparisons among these methods. In this paper, Phase, GAps, GA and GP approaches are implemented and compared for flat, stairs, and slope environments. In addition, simulations of the locomotion evolution for modular snake-like robot are executed in Webots environments.

  • This paper is concerned with the theoretical and experimental study on the force conrtrol of a miniature robotic gripper. The gripper is an uniform flexible cantilever equipped with a distributed set of compact force sensor. As an actuator piezoelectric acturator, piezoelectric acturator is fixed with cupper plate at which the beam is clamped. The mathematical model of the assembled electro-mechaincal system is developed. The force sensor is described by a set of concentrated mass-spring system. The formulated equations of motion are applied to he study of a control problem where the gripper is commanded to grip an object The usefulness of the PID control technique is verified by experiment.

  • This paper addresses the residual vibration problem of robots due to joint flexibility excited by fast accelerations, which has not been easily solved with conventional closed loop controllers. In this paper, an open loop input shaping technique, proposed by singer, has been applied to a 3 DOF robot with joint flexibility. In conjunction to the technique, a closed loop controller based on time-delay controller was also used. The results of simulations and experiments showed that the technique is quite effective for suppressing the residual vibration.

  • The docking and recharging system for a mobile robot must guarantee the ability of the mobile robot to perform its tasks continuously without human intervention. In this paper, two docking mechanisms are proposed with localization error-compensation capability for the auto recharging system. Friction forces or magnetic forces are used between the docking parts of the docking module and those of the docking station. In addition, an auto recharging system is developed to control the power. Since the system is modularized, it can easily be adapted to other robots.
