  • In this study of lifted hydrogen jet with coaxial air, we have experimentally studied the characteristics of stabilization point in turbulent diffusion flames. The objectives are to present the phenomenon of a liftoff height decreasing as increasing fuel velocity and to analyse the flame structure and behavior including liftoff mechanisms. The fuel jet exit velocity was changed from 100 up to 300 m/s and a coaxial air velocity was fixed at 16 m/s with a coflow air less than 0.1 m/s. For the simultaneous measurement of velocity field and reaction zone, PIV and OH PLIF technique was used with two Nd:Yag lasers and CCD cameras. It has been suggested that the stabilization of lifted hydrogen diffusion flames was correlated with a turbulent intensity, $S_t{\sim}u^{\prime}$, and jet Reynolds number, $S_t{\sim}Re^{0.017}_{jet}$.

  • Numerical study was conducted to clarify effects of added $CO_2$ for the downstream interaction between $H_2$-air and CO-air premixed flames in counterflow configuration. The reaction mechanism adopted was Davis model which had been known to be well in agreement with reliable experimental data. The results showed that both lean and rich flammable limits were reduced. The most discernible difference between the two with and without having $CO_2$ addition into $H_2$-air and CO-air premixtures was two flammable islands for the former and one island for the latter at high strain flame conditions. Even a small amount of $H_2$, in which $H_2$-air premixed flame cannot be sustained by itself, participates in CO oxidation, thereby altering the CO-oxidation reaction path from the main reaction route $CO+O_2{\rightarrow}CO_2+O$ with a very long chemical time in CO-air flame to the (H, O, OH)-related reaction routes including $CO+OH{\rightarrow}CO_2+H$ with relatively short chemical times. This intrinsic nature alters flame stability maps appreciably. The results also showed that chemical effects of added $CO_2$ suppressed flame stabilization. Particularly this phenomenon was appreciable at flame conditions which lean and rich extinction boundary was merged. The detailed discussion of chemical effects of added $CO_2$ was addressed to the present downstream interaction.

  • The combustion characteristics with variations in synthetic natural gas (SNG) compositions were studied in a lab-scale combustor. The objective of the current study is to investigate the flame stabilization, flame structure, and spectrometry in a non-premixed SNG flame with varying fuel compositions. For the analysis of light emission in SNG flames, we used a spectrometer. As experimental conditions, the fuel jet velocity at the nozzle exit $u_F$ was varied from 5 to 40 m/s and the coaxial air velocity $u_A$ was varies from 0 to 0.43 m/s. The experiments showed that the flame stability increased with the hydrogen component in SNG.

  • This article presents an application of a large-scale structural mixing model (Broadwell et al. 1984) to the blowout of turbulent reacting jets discharging perpendicularly into an unconfined cross air-flow. In an analysis of a common stability curve, a plausible explanation can be made that the phenomenon of blowout is related only to the mixing time scale of the two flows. The most notable observation is that the blowout distance is traced at fixed positions at all times according to the velocity ratio R. Measurements of the lower blowout limits in the liftable flame agree qualitatively with the blowout parameter ${\varepsilon}$, proposed by Broadwell et al. Good agreement between the results calculated by a modified blowout parameter ${\varepsilon}^'$ and experimental results confirms the important effect of a large-scale structure in specifying the stabilization feature of blowouts.

  • The present study systematically investigates the effect of evaporation rate on the combustion characteristics and the flame stabilization in a gasoline engine. A constant volume combustion chamber was used to elucidate a basic combustion characteristics and the premixer was installed to control temperature and equivalence ratio. And the maximum pressure, combustion duration and flame propagation according to the evaporation rate were measured to determine the optimal temperature range for evaparating a gasoline fuel. These experimental results indicate that the combustion characteristics such as combustion chamber pressure and combustion duration were deteriorated by decreasing surrounding temperature of fuel injected. It was also found that the overall gasification process for gasoline fuel was strongly influenced by a combustion chamber temperature rather than a premixer temperature.

  • Characteristics of lifted flames in axisymmetric laminar coflow jets have been investigated experimentally. Approximate equations for velocity and concentration with virtual origins have been proposed to analyze the behavior of flames in coflow jets. Measuring Rayleigh intensity to investigate the concentration field. proposed approximate equations were confirmed. By using the results of OH PLIF, direct photography and Rayleigh scattering measurement, it is shown that the locations of maximum intensity in direct photography coincide with the tribrachial points in axisymmetric jets and the tribrachial points travel on the stoichiometric contour. For coflow jets, the experimental results of liftoff height have been successfully correlated with nozzle exit velocity using predicted behavior from proposed approximated equations. These results substantiate the stabilization mechanism in coflow jet is based on the balance between flame propagation speed and axial flow velocity, same as for the free jets.

  • The combustion characteristics for the low NOx 50 kW-class gas turbine combustor have been experimentally investigated. In order to achieve the premixing and the lean burn combustion, the geometries of the primary zone including premixed chamber were modified from conventional combustor. The centerline profiles of CO and NO concentration, and temperature were measured for the premixed combustors with or without dilution holes in the liner. The effects of the pilot fuel injection rate and air dilution on flame stabilization and pollutant (CO, NO) emission are discussed in detail.

  • An experimental study was made of flame stabilization in unconfined turbulent swirling propane gas flames using various degrees of swirl and equivalence ratios. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of swirl number and equivalence ratio on the flow characteristics and the combustion characteristics in both nonreacting and reacting flow field of the model combustor which symplifys the continuous type combustor for the practical use.

  • The possibility that self-ignition can be generated near an obstacle is high in practical applications such as a hydrogen car. In this paper, experimental investigations were suggested to understand the effects of a wall on self-ignition phenomena through high-speed images. The results showed that the existence of a wall could not change the ignition phenomena itself irrespective of wall height and burst pressure. However, when a strong flame was induced in the tube, a wall could promote the flame stabilization.

  • This paper present result of numerical simulation of premixed combustion around a triangle Bluff Body. And a numerical simulation of a premixed flame stabilization by a bluff body was performed using LES Model. The calculated results from the LES showed a good agreement with experiment data than k-model. Premixture combustion has flammability limit, quenching distance, smallest ignition energy has the combustion quality of the back. Bluff body makes a recirculation zone. Therefor velocity of behind bluff body is very slow. It was caused by slowly position speed and the fire occurred after the Bluff Body. Occurrence of fire it made the waste gas of high speed and the thrust made well.
