In the paper we investigate characteristics of a transitional behavior from a premixed flame to a triple flame in a lifted flame according to the change of equivalence ratio. In previous study, we showed that the stabilized laminar lifted flame regime is categorized by regimes of premixed flame, triple flame and critical flame. A gas-chromatograph is used to measure concentration field, a smoke-wire system is used to measure streak line, and a PIV system is used to measure velocity field in lifted flame. In the visualization experiment of smoke wire, the flow divergence and redirection reappeared in premixed flame as well as triple flame. Thus we cannot express the flame front of lifted flame has a behavior of triple flame with only flow divergence and redirection. In PIV measurement, flow velocity for those three flames has minimum value at the tip of flame front. To differentiate triple flame and premixed flame, $\Phi$ value of partially premixed fraction is employed. The partially premixed fraction $\Phi$ was constant in premixed flame. In critical flame small gradient appears over the whole regime. In triple flame, typical diffusion flame shape is obtained as parabolic distribution type due to diffusion flame trailing.

We have presented characteristics of a transitional behavior from a premixed flame to a triple flame in a lifted flame according to the change of equivalence ratio. The experimental apparatus consisted of a slot burner and a contraction nozzle for a lifted flame. As concentration difference of the both side of slot burner increases, the shape of flame changed from a premixed flame to a triple flame, and the liftoff height decreased to the minimum value and then increased again. Around this minimum point, it is confirmed a transition regime from premixed flame to triple flame. Consequently, the experimental results of the liftoff height, flame curvature, and luminescence intensity showed that the stabilized laminar lifted flame regime is categorized by regimes of premixed flame, triple flame and critical flame.
An experimental study investigates the flame response characteristics of jet-diffusion flame and premixed flame. The experiment was conducted while varying the amplitude. Flame lengths were quantified for OH chemiluminescence measurement and compared with the result of the flame transfer function. Flame length and flame velocity perturbation were normalized and compared with the result of the flame transfer function. The comparison results appear that velocity perturbation and flame length oscillation of premixed flame show linear behaviors on the other hand jet-diffusion flame, amplitudes are more thant 0.20, shows nonlinear behaviors of flame velocity perturbation and flame length oscillation.

A Experimental study on flame extinction behavior was investigated using He curtain flow with counter triple co-flow burner. Buoyancy force was suppressed up to a microgravity level of $10^{-2}-10^{-3}g$ by using He curtain flow. The stability maps were provided with a functional dependency of diluent mole fraction and global strain rate to clarify the differences in flame extinction behavior. The flame extinction curves had C-shapes at various global strain rates. The oscillation and extinction modes were different each other in terms of the global strain rate, and the flames extinction modes could be classified into five modes such as (I) and (II): an extinction through the shrinkage of the outmost edge flame forward the flame center after self-excitation and without self-excitation, respectively, (III): an extinction through rapid advancement of a flame hole while the outmost edge flame is stationary, (IV): self-excitation occurs in the outermost edge flame and the center edge flame and then a donut shaped flame is formed and/or the flame is entirely extinguished, (V): shrinkage of the outermost edge flame without self-excitation followed by shrinkage or survival of the center flame. These oscillation and extinction modes could be identified well to the behavior of edge flame. The result also showed that the edge flame was influenced significantly by the conductive heat losses to the flame center or ambient He curtain flow.

The unsteady heat release characteristics play a significant role in combustion instabilities observed in low emissions gas turbine combustors. Such combustion instabilities are often caused by coupling mechanisms between unsteady heat release rates and acoustic perturbations. A generalized model of the turbulent flame response to acoustic perturbations is analytically formulated by considering a distributed heat release along a curved mean flame front and using the flame's kinematic model that incorporates the turbulent flame development. The effects of the development of flame speed on the flame transfer functions are examined by calculating the transfer functions with a constant or developing flame speed. The flame transfer function due to velocity fluctuation shows that, when a developing flame speed is used, the transfer function magnitude decreases faster with Strouhal number than the results with a constant flame speed at low Strouhal numbers. The flame transfer function due to mixture ratio fluctuation, however, exhibits the opposite results: the transfer function magnitude with a developing flame speed increases faster than that with a constant flame speed at low Strouhal numbers. Oscillatory behaviors of both transfer function magnitudes are shown to be damped when a developing flame speed is used. Both transfer functions also show similar behaviors in the phase characteristics: The phases of both transfer functions with a developing flame speed increase more rapidly than those with a constant flame speed.

This paper shows the dynamics of the Burke-Schumann flame. To show flame dynamics, this paper measures the flame surface and heat release rate. The flame shape is divided into three types with forcing frequencies. When the forcing frequency is lower than 120 Hz, the upper region of flame is cut. The flame is stagnant with 220 to 280 Hz forcing frequencies. The rest conditions of forcing frequencies make the connected wave shape of flame. The heat release rate is expressed by the flame transfer function. The gain of the flame transfer function is similar with the oscillation magnitude of the flame area except for flame cutting conditions. The flame is cut because the fuel is not supplied to upper flame region.
The PSC (Propagation of Surfaces under Curvature) algorithm is adapted to the simulation of a flame propagation in a premixed medium including the effect of volume expansion across the flame front due to exothermicity. The algorithm is further developed to incorporate the flame anchoring scheme. This methodology is successfully applied to numerically simulate the response of an anchored V-flame to two strong free stream vortices, in accord with experimental observations of a passage of Karman vortex street through a flame. The simulation predicts flame cusping when a strong vortex pair interacts with flame front. In other words, this algorithm handles merging and breaking of the flame front and provides an accurate calculation of the flame curvature which is needed for flame propagation computation and estimation of curvature-dependent flame speeds.

Experiments have been conducted to clarify impacts of curtain flow and velocity ratio on low strain rate flame extinction, and to further display transition of shrinking flame disk to flame-hole. Critical mole fractions at flame extinction are examined in terms of velocity ratio, global strain rate, and nitrogen curtain flow rate. It is shown that multi-dimensional effects at low strain rate flames through global strain rate, velocity ratio, and curtain flowrate dominantly contribute to flame extinction and transition of shrinking flame disk to flame hole. Our concerns are particularly focused on the dynamic behavior of an edge flame in shrinking flame disk.
Experimental study is conducted to identify the existence of a shrinking flame disk and to clarify its flame characteristics through the inspection of critical mole fraction at flame extinction and edge flame oscillation at low strain rate flames. Experiments are made as varying global strain rate, velocity ratio, and burner distance. The transition from a shrinking flame disk to a flame hole is verified through gradient measurements of maximum flame temperature. The evidence of edge flame oscillation in flame disk is also provided through numerical simulation in microgravity. It is found at low strain rate flame disks in normal gravity that buoyancy effects are importantly contributing to lateral heat loss to burner rim, and is proven through critical mole fraction at flame extinction, edge flame oscillation, and measurements of flame temperature gradient along flame disk surface.
