Growth Characteristics and Productivity of Italian Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) New Variety, 'Green Call 2ho'

  • This experiment was conducted to breed a very early maturing variety of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) in Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA, Cheonan 2015-2017. The new variety of Italian ryegrass, 'Green call 2ho' is a diploid variety with green in leaf color and has semi-erect growth habit in late autumn and erect growth habit in early spring, 'Green call 2ho' was in heading date as a early-maturing variety April 24. Also 'Green call 2ho' was narrower by 2 mm in flag leaf width, longer by 2.5 cm in flag leaf length and shorter by 3 cm in plant height than those of the control variety, 'Florida 80', respectively. 'Green call 2ho' was also thicker by 0.33 mm in stem thickness and strong in winter hardness. Dry matter (DM) yield (11,688 kg/ha) of 'Green call 2ho' was 7% higher than that of 'Florida 80'. Total digestible nutrient (TDN), crude protein (CP) and relative feed value (RFV) of 'Green call 2ho' were 61.3 %, 9.8 % and 98.2, respectively which are 2.6, 0.6, and 8.4 % higher, respectively than those of 'Florida 80', respectively. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of 'Green call 2ho' were 34.9 and 58.5 % which are 3.3 and 2.7 % lower than those of 'Florida 80', respectively.

  • This experiment was carried out to breed a medium maturing variety of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) in Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Institute of Animal Science, Rural Development Administration (RDA), Cheonan from 2019 to 2020. An Italian ryegrass variety, IR 604 is a tetraploid variety with green in leaf color and has half-erect growth habit in late autumn and erect growth habit in early spring, IR 604 was on May 17 in heading date as a medium maturing variety. Also, IR 604 was longer by 11 cm in flag leaf length and longer by 1.3 cm in plant height than those of the control variety, Kowinner, respectively. IR 604 was also thicker by 1.0 mm in stem thickness and strong in winter hardness. Dry matter (DM) yield (11,036 kg/ha) of IR 604 was 16.6% higher than that of Kowinner. Total digestible nutrient (TDN), crude protein (CP) and relative feed value (RFV) of IR 604 were 60.4, 13.8% and 100.6 which are 1.4, 3.3%, 7.7 higher than those of Kowinner, respectively. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of IR 604 were 35.5 and 56.7% which are 1.3 and 3.6% lower than those of Kowinner, respectively.

A Cold-Tolerant and Early-Heading Italian Ryegrass New Variety, 'Kogreen' (내한 조숙성 이탈리안 라이그라스 신품종 '코그린')

  • This experiment was carried out to breed the cold-tolerant variety of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) at the Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Livestock Research Institute, RDA at Suwon, Korea, from 1999 to 2005. The new variety 'Kogreen' is a diploid variety with a green leaf color and had semi-erect habit in late autumn and erect growth habit in early spring. The heading date of 'Kogreen' was on May 4, and for 'Florida 80' was May 2, both are considered as early-heading variety. 'Kogreen' was wider by 0.7mm in flag leaf width, longer by 2 cm in flag leaf length and shorter by 1cm in plant length than the control variety, Florida 80. Stem width of 'Kogreen' was similar to that of 'Florida 80' and 'Hwasan 101'. cold tolerance of 'Kogreen' was better than that of 'Florida 80'. Dry matter(DM) yield (12,884kg/ha) of 'Kogreen' was 3% less than that of 'Florida 80'. in vitro dry matter digestibility was 74.7% and total digestible nutrient was 65.1%, which are 3.6% and 1.5% higher than those of 'Florida 80', respectively. Acid detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber of 'Kogreen' were 30.1% and 54.1% which are 1.9% and 1.3% lower than those of 'Florida 80', respectively.

Kowinmaster was 13th May in heading date as a medium-maturing variety. Especially, Kowinmaster was similar to Florida 80 in flag leaf width, longer 3cm in flag leaf length and longer 6cm in plant length than those of control variety, Florida 80, respectively. Stem width of Kowinmaster was similar to that of Florida 80. Cold tolerance of Kowinmaster was better than that of Florida 80. Dry matter yield (9,521 kg/ha) of Kowinmaster was 2% more than that of Florida 80. Feed value of Kowinmaster was 12.1% in crude protein, 70.9% in In vitro dry matter digestibility and 32.9% in acid detergent fiber that were similar to those of Florida 80, respectively, but in neutral detergent fiber, Kowimaster was 56.0% that was 1% lower than that of Florida 80.

  • This experiment was carried out to breed a very early-maturing variety of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) in the Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA, Cheonan, Korea from 2012 to 2014. New variety "Greenfarm3ho" is a diploid variety with a green leaf color, a semi-erect growth habit in late autumn/fall, and an erect growth habit in early spring. With a heading date of April 27, Greenfarm3ho was categorized as an early-maturing variety. Compared with the "Greenfarm" control variety, Greenfarm3ho's flag-leaf width was narrower by 0.5 mm, its flag-leaf length was longer by 4.4 cm, and its plant length was longer by 3 cm; additionally, Greenfarm3ho's stem thickness was 0.1 mm thicker and it showed winter hardiness. The dry matter (DM) yield (8,976 kg/ha) of Greenfarm3ho was similar to that of Greenfarm. The in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), total digestible nutrient (TDN), and crude protein (CP) of Greenfarm3ho were 70.0%, 64.1%, and 1.0%, respectively, which are higher than those of Greenfarm by 2.9%, 2.0%, and 1.4%, respectively. The acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content of Greenfarm3ho were 31.4% and 53.3%, respectively, which are lower than those of Greenfarm by 2.5% and 3.0%, respectively.

'Green farm' was thicker in stem thickness and stronger in winter hardness than those of the 'Florida 80'. Dry matter (DM) yield (11,790 kg/ha) of 'Green farm' was similar to that of 'Florida 80'. In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), total digestible nutrient (TDN) and crude protein (CP) of 'Green farm' were 68.7, 63.3 and 10.3% which are 1.9, 1.7 and 0.6% higher than those of 'Florida 80', respectively. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of 'Green farm' were 32.5 and 54.6% which are 2.2 and 4.3% lower than those of the 'Florida 80', respectively.

Total digestible nutrient (TDN), crude protein (CP) and relative feed value (RFV) of 'Green Call' were 60.8, 10.3 and 96.7 % which are 2.1, 1.1, 6.9 % higher than those of 'Florida 80', respectively. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of 'Green Call' were 35.5 and 58.9 % which are 2.7 and 2.3 % lower than those of 'Florida 80', respectively.
