Because of the high stress concentration near the toe of a welded joint, the calculation of local stress using the finite element method which is relevant to the fatigue strength of the weld toe crack, is a challenging task. This is mainly caused by the sensitivity of finite element analysis, which usually occurs near the area of a dramatically changing stress field. This paper presents a novel numerical method through which a less mesh-sensitive local stress calculation can be achieved based on the 3D solid finite element, strictly sticking to the original definition of hot spot stress. In order to achieve the goal, a traction stress, defined at 0.5t and 1.5t away from the weld toe, was calculated using either a force-equivalent or work-equivalent approach, both of which are based on the internal nodal forces on the imaginary cut planes. In the force-equivalent approach, the traction stress on the imaginary cut plane was calculated using the simple force and moment equilibrium, whereas the equivalence of the work done by both the nodal forces and linearized traction stress was employed in the work-equivalent approach. In order to confirm the validity of the proposed method, five typical welded joints widely used in ships and offshore structures were analyzed using five different solid element types and four different mesh sizes. Finally, the performance of the proposed method was compared with that of the traditionally used surface stress extrapolation method. It turned out that the sensitivity of the hot spot stress for the analyzed typical welded joints obtained from the proposed method outperformed the traditional extrapolation method by far.
When precast concrete infill panels are connected to steel frames at discrete locations, interaction at the structural interface is neither complete nor absent. The contribution of precast concrete infill panels to the lateral stiffness and strength of steel frames can be significant depending on the quality, quantity and location of the discrete interface connections. This paper presents preliminary experimental and finite element results of an investigation into the composite behaviour of a square steel frame with a precast concrete infill panel subject to lateral loading. The panel is connected at the corners to the ends of the top and bottom beams. The Frame-to-Panel-Connection, FPC4 between steel beam and concrete panel consists of two parts. A T-section with five achor bars welded to the top of the flange is cast in at the panel corner at a forty five degree angle. The triangularly shaped web of the T-section is reinforced against local buckling with a stiffener plate. The second part consists of a triangular gusset plate which is welded to the beam flange. Two bolts acting in shear connect the gusset plate to the web of the T-section. This way the connection can act in tension or compression. Experimental pull-out tests on individual connections allowed their load deflection characteristics to be established. A full scale experiment was performed on a one-storey one-bay 3 by 3 m infilled frame structure which was horizontally loaded at the top. With the characteristics of the frame-to-panel connections obtained from the experiments on individual connections, finite element analyses were performed on the infilled frame structures taking geometric and material non-linear behaviour of the structural components into account. The finite element model yields reasonably accurate results. This allows the model to be used for further parametric studies.
The formative procedure of five-viscera has been explained for the restriction[相克; 己勝] and the reverse restriction[相侮, 勝己] in five phase theory on the medical literatures from ancient times. In the formative procedure of five-viscera, it would seem that two theories are mutually contradictory. But this problem is solved in the view: As the upward, downward movement and the circulation progress, five-viscera and five-bowels develop. In brief on the formative procedure of human viscera and bowels, first, the circulation of five-viscera and five-bowels forms three phase of upper-middle-lower(fire-earth-water), and these phases generate Triple energizers[Samcho, 三焦], consequently it is to be five-viscera and six-bowels, to be formed 'Meridian and collateral[Gyeongnak, 經絡]' in that order. The triple energizers is situated in middle stage of formation of 'Vicera' and 'Meridian and collateral' on developing stage. It would be thought that Triple energizer meridian[Susoyangsamchogyeong, 手少陽三焦經] is formed in procedure of Meridian and collateral after formation of upper-middle-lower of the triple energizers.
Tension-stiffening is the contribution of concrete between the cracks to carry tensile stresses after cracking in Reinforced Concrete (RC) members. In this paper, a tension-stiffening model has been proposed for computationally efficient nonlinear analysis of RC flexural members subjected to service load. The proposed model has been embedded in a typical cracked span length beam element. The element is visualized to consist of at the most five zones (cracked or uncracked). Closed form expressions for flexibility and stiffness coefficients and end displacements have been obtained for the cracked span length beam element. Further, for use in everyday design, a hybrid analytical-numerical procedure has been developed for nonlinear analysis of RC flexural members using the proposed tension-stiffening model. The procedure yields deflections as well as redistributed bending moments. The proposed model (and developed procedure) has been validated by the comparison with experimental results reported elsewhere and also by comparison with the Finite Element Method (FEM) results. The procedure would lead to drastic reduction in computational time in case of large RC structures.
The rational finite element method is different from the standard finite element method, which is constructed using basic solutions of the governing differential equations as interpolation functions in the elements. Therefore, it is superior to the isoparametric approach because of its obvious physical meaning and accuracy; it has successfully been applied to the isotropic elasticity problem. In this paper, the formulation of rational finite elements for plane orthotropic elasticity problems is deduced. This method is formulated directly in the physical domain with full consideration of the requirements of the patch test. Based on the number of element nodes and the interpolation functions, different approaches are applied with complete polynomial interpolation functions. Then, two special stiffness matrixes of elements with four and five nodes are deduced as a representative application. In addition, some typical numerical examples are considered to evaluate the performance of the elements. The numerical results demonstrate that the present method has a high level of accuracy and is an effective technique for solving plane orthotropic elasticity problems.
The natural frequencies of continuous systems depend on the governing partial differential equation and can be numerically estimated using the finite element method. The accuracy and convergence of the finite element method depends on the choice of basis functions. A basis function will generally perform better if it is closely linked to the problem physics. The stiffness matrix is the same for either static or dynamic loading, hence the basis function can be chosen such that it satisfies the static part of the governing differential equation. However, in the case of a rotating beam, an exact closed form solution for the static part of the governing differential equation is not known. In this paper, we try to find an approximate solution for the static part of the governing differential equation for an uniform rotating beam. The error resulting from the approximation is minimized to generate relations between the constants assumed in the solution. This new function is used as a basis function which gives rise to shape functions which depend on position of the element in the beam, material, geometric properties and rotational speed of the beam. The results of finite element analysis with the new basis functions are verified with published literature for uniform and tapered rotating beams under different boundary conditions. Numerical results clearly show the advantage of the current approach at high rotation speeds with a reduction of 10 to 33% in the degrees of freedom required for convergence of the first five modes to four decimal places for an uniform rotating cantilever beam.
In this paper, finite element analysis of an automatic five-stage precision cold forging process of a yoke, a steering part of a passenger's car, is conducted with emphasis on spring back analysis at the yoke-forming stage and its experimental verification is subsequently made. An elastoplastic finite element method with MINI-element technique employed for the analysis of the entire process is explained. There is emphasis that the thin film of material formed between the punch and die in the stage may result to some errors especially in elastoplastic finite element analysis of spring back due to frequent remeshing. The numerical robustness of the spring back analysis in regards to remeshing is hence shown first through investigation into its effect on the predicted spring back. Experimental measurement of displacement due to spring back is carried out for comparison with the predicted results, and they are in a qualitative agreement with each other.
In this work, Internet Supercomputing methodology is introduced and the concept is materialized for large-scale finite element analysis. The primary resources of Internet Supercomputing are numerous idling PCs connected by Internet with no regards to their locations. Therefore, it becomes one of the most affordable ways to achieve supercomputing power unlimitedly if the appropriate parallel algorithm and the operating program are developed for this slow network environment. Under the above concept, virtual supercomputing system InterSup I is constructed and tested. To establish the InterSup I system, 64 CPU nodes, which are located in several places and connected by Internet, are conscripted, and parallel finite element software is developed for linear static analysis of structures based on the parallel multi-frontal algorithm. By the established InterSup I system, analysis of finite element structural model having around five million DOFs are solved to check the affordability and effectiveness of Internet Supercomputing.
This study is to apply of AHP to the performance management of university organization. Especially, in the present study, the authors modeled performance evaluations for S university administration hierarchically and analyzed the weights of those. The domains of performance evaluations were divided in five domains: strategy, resource management, process, finance management, and customer management, referred to the viewpoints of BSC. The results of analysis revealed that strategy was the most important element of evaluation in the first stage and except for strategy and finance management which consist of the single element of evaluation respectively in the second stage, the efficiency of administration supporting service was the important element of evaluation. The weights of performance evaluations, however, revealed in different as the class of position. Finally this study showed that the weights of performance evaluations computed in the present study can be used as those of evaluation indices for S university administration.
This study presents the effects of geometrical dimensions of concrete gravity dams on the seismic response considering different base width/dam height (L/H) ratios. In the study, a concrete gravity dam with the height of 200 m is selected and finite element models of the dam are constituted including five different L/H ratios such as 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25. All dams are modeled in ANSYS software considering dam-reservoir-foundation interaction. 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake records are applied to models in upstream-downstream direction and linear time history analyses are performed. Dynamic equilibrium equations of motions obtained from the finite element models of the coupled systems are solved by using Newmark time integration algorithm. The seismic response of the models is evaluated from analyses presenting natural frequencies, mode shapes, displacements and principal stresses. The results show that the L/H ratios considerably affect the seismic response of gravity dams. Also, the model where L/H ratio is 1.00 has more desirable results and most appropriate representation of the seismic response of gravity dams.
