  • This study deals with the development of an electrofusion welding machine that is capable of joining plastic pipes using a recently developed electrofusion fitting. This fitting has built-in conductive plastics that are used to weld the joint together as a heating element. In order to explain the mechanism of the new machine, 1) the resistance characteristics of the heating element were explained, 2) the method of electric welding that uses the electrofusion fitting was described, and 3) the method of power supply based on controlling the firing angle was explained. A control system for an intelligent electrofusion welding machine was proposed. This system has the ability to recognize the diameter of an electrofusion fitting using a lookup-table based on the difference of resistance curves according to fitting types, and it is able to weld the fittings regardless of the ambient temperature. A new algorithm was developed to control the power of electric welding through the recognition of feature points from the resistance curve of the heating element. In order to evaluate the performance of the developed welding machine, tests involving the welding of 16 mm- and 20 mm-type fittings were carried out. Examining the welding results, we concluded that the proposed welding machine will offer high productivity and reliability in the field of electrofusion welding.

  • A novel pulse fitting analysis (PFA) method is presented for the acquisition of nuclear spectra. The charging process of the feedback capacitor in the resistive feedback charge-sensitive preamplifier is equivalent to the impulsive pulse, and its impulse response function (IRF) can be obtained by non-linear fitting of the falling edge of the nuclear pulse. The integral of the IRF excluding the baseline represents the energy deposition of the particles in the detector. In addition, since the non-linear fitting process in PFA method is difficult to achieve in the conventional architecture of spectroscopy system, a new multi-channel analyzer (MCA) based on Zynq SoC is proposed, which transmits all the data of nuclear pulses from the programmable logic (PL) to the processing system (PS) by high-speed AXI-Stream in order to implement PFA method with precision. The linearity of new MCA has been tested. The spectrum of 137Cs was obtained using LaBr3(Ce) scintillator detector, and was compared with commercial MCA by ORTEC. The results of tests indicate that the MCA based on PFA method has the same performance as the commercial MCA based on pulse height analysis (PHA) method and excellent linearity for γ-rays with different energies, which infers that PFA method is an effective and promising method for the acquisition of spectra. Furthermore, it provides a new solution for nuclear pulse processing algorithms involving regression and iterative processes.

  • This paper deals with smooth curve fitting of data corrupt by noise. Most research efforts have been concentrated on employing the smoothness penalty function with the estimation of its optimal parameter in order to avoid the 'overfilling and underfitting' dilemma in noisy data fitting problems. Our approach, called DBSF(Differentiation-Based Smooth Fitting), is different from the above-mentioned method. The main idea is that optimal functions approximately estimating the derivative of noisy curve data are generated first using genetic programming, and then their integral values are evaluated and used to recover the original curve form. To show the effectiveness of this approach, DBSP is demonstrated by presenting two illustrative examples and the application of estimating the principal dimensions of bulk cargo ships in the conceptual design stage.

  • Phase-type distributions are the distributions of the time to absorption in finite and absorbing Markov chains. They generalize, while at the same time, retain the tractability of the exponential distributions and their family. They are widely used as stochastic models from queuing theory, reliability, dependability, and forecasting, to computer networks, security, and computational design. The ability to fit phase-type distributions to intractable or empirical distributions is, therefore, highly desirable for many practical purposes. Many methods and tools currently exist for this fitting problem. In this paper, we present the results of our investigation on using orthogonal-distance fitting as a method for fitting phase-type distributions, together with a comparison to the currently existing fitting methods and tools.

  • This paper introduced the new calibration algorithm of a straight-type five-hole pressure probe necessary for calculating three-dimensional flow velocity components. The new velocity data reduction method using both a commercial two-dimensional curve-fitting program and the zone partition method of a calibration map was firstly introduced in this study. This new calibration method can be applied up to the wide flow angle of ${\pm}80^{\circ}$ despite of using a five-hole pressure probe because this data reduction method showed a comparatively good performance in calculating yaw and pitch angles from the calibration map.

  • Nonlinear hydrological model containing the nonlinearity of effective rainfall, lag time and runoff is presented. In the evaluation of rainfall excess, the polynomial fitting method for total rainfall, 5 day antecedant rainfall and direct runoff is developed. In the application to actual watershed, the estimated model parameters of nonlinear lag model reflecting the nonlinearity of lag time are compared with the parameters, by both the fitting method and the correlation, model which are the modified version of the storage function model. The Successive Approximation Method in mathematical solution and Newton-Rhapson method in numerical solution are found to be superior to the conventional numerical graphic method in the analysis of nonlinear processes.

  • Analyses which loads were regarded as instant load and gradual step load were performed with data measured on gradually loaded field, and the results were inspected to find effect of load condition, and final settlements predicted by Hyperbolic, Tan's, Asaoka's, and Monden's method were compared with each other. According to above analyses, the following conclusions were obtained. Settlement curves which loads were regarded as instant load and gradual step load were beginning to coincide at time of twice duration of embankment. On the ground installed vertical drain, the result of Hyperbolic, Tan's, Asaoka's, Monden's, curve fitting I, and curve fitting II (simple, Carrillo) methods make conclude that Asaoka, curve fitting I, and curve fitting II methods agree with measured settlement.

  • This paper presents 3D line segment extraction method, which can be used in generating 3D rooftop model. The core of our method is that 3D line segment is extracted by using line fitting of elevation data on 2D line coordinates of ortho-image. In order to use elevations in line fitting, the elevations should be reliable. To measure the reliability of elevation, in this paper, we employ the concept of self-consistency. We test the effectiveness of the proposed method with a quantitative accuracy analysis using synthetic images generated from Avenches data set of Ascona aerial images. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method shows average 30 line errors of .16 - .30 meters, which are about $10\%$ of the conventional area-based method.

  • One of the important functions of an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is to classify vehicle types using a vision system. We propose a method using machine-learning algorithms for this classification problem with 3-D object model fitting. It is also necessary to detect road lanes from a fixed traffic surveillance camera in preparation for model fitting. We apply a background mask and line analysis algorithm based on statistical measures to Hough Transform (HT) in order to remove noise and false positive road lanes. The results show that this method is quite efficient in terms of quality.
