  • Internal waves and internal tides occur frequently along the eastern coast of Korea. During the spring-tide period in April 2003, the East Korean Warm Current (EKWC) flowed near the Korean East Coast Farming Forecast System (KECFFS; a moored oceanographic measurement system), creating a strong thermocline at the intermediate layer. Weakened stratification and well-mixed water appeared frequently around the KECFFS, with duration of approximately 1 day. The results suggest the following scenario. Baroclinic motion related to the internal tide generated high frequency internal waves around the thermocline. The breaking of those waves then created turbulence around the thermocline. After well-mixed water appeared, a current component with perpendicular direction to the EKWC appeared within the inertial period. The change in stratification around the KECFFS locally broke the geostrophic balance as a transient state. This local vertical mixing formed an ageostrophic current within the inertial period.

  • Pacific abalone Haliotis discus discus is an important fisheries resource in Jeju, Korea. For basic information about its current genetic status in relation to stock enhancement, the level and distribution of genetic variation between wild and released stocks of Pacific abalone in Jeju were examined at nine cross-species microsatellite markers including the use of two novel primers. High levels of polymorphism were observed between the two populations. A total of 146 different alleles were found at all loci, with some alleles being unique. The allelic variability ranged from five to 27 in the wild population and from four to 16 in the released sample. The average observed and expected heterozygosities were estimated to be 0.74 and 0.84 in the wild sample and 0.70 and 0.78 in the released sample, respectively. Although a considerable loss of rare alleles was observed in the released sample, no statistically significant reductions were found in heterozygosity or allelic diversity in the released sample compared to the wild population. Low but significant genetic differentiation was found between the wild and released populations. These results suggest that the intensive breeding practices for stock enhancement may have resulted in a further decrease in genetic diversity, and that the cross-species microsatellite markers used in this study represent a potentially efficient means for further genetic studies, providing beneficial information for the protection and management of H. discus discus.

  • This paper aims at overviewing Korean fisheries profile with a view on why Korean fisheries need marine ranching program as a new fisheries paradigm - a community-based co-management approach and drawing some policy implications from the advanced experience in fisheries. The aims of community-based co-management approach as a planned approach can be set out under the planning objectives of efficiency and equity. In this context Tongyeong marine ranching program is an important government-sponsored pilot enterprise. Experiences in the advanced fisheries such as Canadian Snow-Crab case suggest that in order to be successful for marine ranching be successful it is necessary that (i) there should be high-value species, (ii) property right should be established, (iii) there should be the reasonable number of participants involved, (iv) the participants and the government should be able to share resource enhancement/management/utilization responsibilities and associated fisheries management expenses. Among these, management cost sharing based on the practical partnership between fishing communities and government is of particular importance because the government must have a full responsibility for all ranching program expenditure unless revenues sufficient to guarantee reasonable income and to share management cost are generated from the ranching business.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the economic effect of the release of seed flounder to the central area of the West Sea, which was analyzed into both direct and indirect effects. The results showed that based on the data collected from partial area, the economic effect of flounder seed release reached 6.97 times, average catch proportion was 32.27$\%$, and recapture rate was 11.26$\%$, suggesting that economic effect was very high. In addition, it was observed that the recapture rate was greatly higher than 2.05$\%$, that of Break-Even-Point. It was noted that the increased catch by the release of seed flounder resulted in the increase in commission of sales and the increase in sports fishing. Another economic effect observed were diverse including the increase in income of fishing village, elevated spirit to proper management of fisheries resources, maintaining of willingness to live in fishing village through activation of local fishing village, prevention of illegal fishing including capture of juvenile fish, and the increase in the supply of sea food of high quality. It is emphasized that although the investigation was conducted in the same area, the results will vary by size at release, time at release and other factors. Finally, there is a need to expand species and area of study for more active economic analysis incorporating natural sciences.

  • The objective of this study is to develop education programs for cultivating smart aquaculture experts through a education demand survey of industries, high school students, university (graduate) students and field workers. The industry demand analysis was conducted as an in-depth interview on representives from seven companies. Education demand surveys were conducted on 96 students and field workers in the Jeonnam region. Results on the demand survey were analyzed using frequency analysis and cross-analysis. The company representatives responded that they want to participated in internship and retraining programs to proactively secure manpowers with convergence capabilities about smart aquaculture. Seven companies preferred manpowers with basic competencies on ICT (Information and Communications Technologies) or aquaculture. The most respondents in the demand survey want to participate in the education program for experience on advanced technology, self-development and enhancement of work capability. On the other hand, some respondents said that the education is time-consuming and that the education program does not fit their level. Thus, the education program should be developed in a way to minimize the spatial and temporal limitations of education targets and to improve understanding of non-majors by reflecting the demands of human resources in the industrial field.

  • We examined physiological and histological responses related to the survival, oxygen consumption, excretion, and O/N ratio of the ark shell, Scapharca subcrenata, as a result of salinity changes. The 20-day $LS_{50}$ (median lethal salinity) at $15^{\circ}C$ was 13.87 practical salinity units (psu; confidence limits 10.30-18.74 psu), whereas the 14-day $LS_{50}$ at $25^{\circ}C$ was 12.59 psu (confidence limits 8.03-18.16 psu). In conditions of decreasing salinity, the osmolarity of individuals acclimated within 5 h above 26.4 psu but required more than 60 h below 13.2 psu. Oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rates varied irregularly as salinity decreased. The O/N ratio was 19 and 27 at water temperatures of $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively, but decreased to 1-10 as salinity declined. The effects of decreasing salinity were observed in the histological changes to each organ of S. subcrenata. As salinity decreased, cilia fell off, the epithelial layer underwent necrosis and vacuolation, the connective tissue layers of the mantle and visceral mass were destroyed, and hemocytes increased in the gills. The results of this study could prove important in investigating causes of mass mortality and managing shellfish aquaculture farms.

  • The fisheries resources by a set net in the coastal waters off Neungpo, Goeje Island from 2003 to 2004 were studied to determine species composition and catch variation. The main fishing period by a set net were from April to December in 2003 and from May to December in 2004. A total weight of 48 species caught through the survey period was 540,688.0kg. Most of them were 44 species of fishes and a few were 4 species of cephalopods. Dominant species was Trachurus japonicus accounting to 57.5% in total catch. Sub-dominant species were Trichiurus lepturus(12.9%), Engraulis japonicus(10.6%), Scomber japonicus(6.9%), Clupea pallasii(4.5%), Todarodes pacificus(2.8%) and Parapristipoma trilineaturm(1.3%). The remnant species showed a low catch, indicating the catch had less than 1% in total, respectively. T. japonicus and T. lepturus were caught throughout the survey period, but C. pallasii, Gadus macrocephalus, Oncorhynchus keta in low temperature season and Thunnus obesus in high temperature season. The fishing ground temperature was 11.7-24.0${^{\circ}C}$ in range and the catch by a set net was higher in autumn than in spring and in summer with the variation of fishing ground temperature. The annual catch by a set net was much higher in 2004 than in 2003 due to high temperature(>17${^{\circ}C}$) and the recruitment of T. japonicus from offshore seas. Therefore we concluded that the catch of Neungpo fishing ground by a set net was highly related to the variation of T. japonicus catch with fishing ground temperature.

  • Effects of artificial releases of sea cucumber around the marine ranching area in Jeollanam-do were showed very efficient by the released good seeds(total weight, 3.2g) in 'Wolhang', compared with those in 'Hwatae'. The survival rates were the higher in 'Wolhang' by 66.0% than in 'Hwatae' by 27.0%. The results indicates that the releasing effect of sea cucumber depended on the releas size. To analyze the productivity we investigated the growth and survival rates of sea cucumber according to the releasing area. Our result showed that the growth rate and survival rate was higher in 'Hwatae' than other areas. In 'Hwatae', the growth rate and survival rate were 6.2g and 32.1% respective. The results indicates that if the food supply is continued, although proceeding contamination the productivity of sea cucumber increased. Therefore, in order to enhancement and conservation of resource, bottom of fish cage should consider to the utilization.

  • In order to standardize the juvenile abalone rearing technique, we selected sample farms by region in East, West and South coasts of Korea and Jeju island. We also have reviewed previous literature and visited farms to survey on the management of abalone juvenile production, spawning, hatching and so forth. Results of investigation are as follows: The light colors of tanks for larvae breeding are good for a frequent examination of larvae behaviour changes during the breeding period. The tank for the abalone juvenile production is a rectangular form in general and its size should amount to 3.5 m in length and 1.2 m width. It also should be built with proper drainage. The best age and size of adult for juvenile production are 3-6 years old individuals, with 9-12 cm separate burial and 125-150 g average weight. To induce spawning, the use of the exposure on air and ultraviolet ray together was the most effective. The density of larvae by plate should be 150-300 individuals and the proper stocking density was est imated and amount to 10-30 individuals. It has been shown that a correlation between water surface size($X_1$) and number of plates ($Y_1$), when producing abalone juveniles, is quite high and it is described by equation $Y_1=138.88X_1-5,736.8\;(R^2=0.9028)$. In addition, it has also been shown that a correlation between production of abalone juveniles ($Y_2$) and number of plates ($X_2$) is high and it is described by equation $Y_2=4.554X_2+12,493\;(R^2=0.8818)$. In Jindo region where a mass production of juveniles abalone has been done, it was shown, that a correlation between rearing water surface size ($X_3$) and production of juveniles abalone ($Y_3$) is very high and this relationship was described by the equation $Y_3=747.03X_2+94,359(R^2=0.9809)$. It has also been shown that a correlation between water surface size ($X_4$) and production of abalone juveniles ($Y_4$) in nationwide is high and the relationship between this variables was described by equation $Y_4=635.85X_4+99,923\;(R^2=0.9020)$.

  • The developments of mariculture fisheries depend on both the natural environmental inputs such as sun, rain, wind, tide and the economic inputs such as ships, fuels, facilities, labor. for the enhancement of mariculture productivity in Deukryang Bay, a new attempt has been made to connect the environmental resources and the economic activity within one system. This study applies EMERGY analysis that evaluates environmental energies, fuels, goods and services in terms of solar emjoelus. In total EMERGY use $(69.65\times10^{20}\;sej/yr)$ the natural environment inputs is $78\%\;(54.60\times10^{20}\;sej/yr)$. This means that the mariculture in Deukryang Bay depends on mainly environmental resources. Net EMERGY yield ratio was 4.63 which indicated high value as a resource, EMERGY investment ratio was 0.28 that means to gain 3.6 times energy from the natural environment than those of economy. If the fisherie's products are made by renewable EMERGY input to Deukryang Bay, the calculated carrying capacity of fishes, crustaceans, shellfish and seaweeds were 1,140, 110, 1,553 and 9,074 ton/yr, respectively. If the quantity of renewable EMERGY input to mariculture grounds in Deukrysng Bay was calculated-based on only shellfish product, shellfish products was estimated as about 1,195 ton/yr.
