An experiment on the growth of common carp by feeding low (animal) protein feed when stocked at a rotatively low rate of density was conducted in 1976 at the fish pond of the National fisheries University of Busan. Three ponds averaging $454m^2$ were used with rations of different combinations of feed in respect to protein content. Each pond was equally stocked with 72 general common carp averaging 81.2g and 28 colored common carp averaging 37.8g and the fish were fed for 189 days. In the first pond where the feed with $20\%$f ish meal content ($19.0\%$ crude protein) was fed, the general common carp grew to 776.2g average (63 survived), colored common carp to 504.2g (24 survived), and total average to 701.1g (87 survived). In the second pond where $35\%$ fish meal feed ($27.3\\%$ crude protein) given, the fish grew to 792.9g (70 survived), 539.1g (23 survived) and 730.1g(93 survived), respectively, and in the third pond where $50\%$ fish meal feed ($34.6\%$ crude protein) given, the fish grew to 983.7g (49 survived), 630.4g (23 survived) and 870.8g (72 survived), respectively. A significant mortality during the experiment was due to an accidental introduction of Trichodina and Dactylogyrus infected with the stocked fish under experiment at the beginning. In this experiment the rate of harvest per hectare was very low being 1,352kg, 1,495kg and 1,447kg respectively which is tess than half of the yield at general commercial fish ponds. Therefore, it is concluded that at this rate of reduced production trial, the content of protein in the feed must not be cut down from the normal level.

Two feeding trials were conducted to investigate the effects of several dietary additives on growth and feed utilization of juvenile flounder. In the first experiment, three replicate groups of juveniles (average weight 1.5 g) were fed diets with or without wasabi extract and chitosan for 7 weeks. Survival rate, weight gain, protein efficiency ratio, hepatosomatic index and condition factor were not affected by the different dietary additives (P>0.05). Feed efficiency of fish fed the wasabi extract diet was significantly higher than that of fish fed the control diet (P<0.05). Daily feed intake of fish fed the wasabi extract diet was significantly lower than that of fish fed the other diets (P<0.05). In the second experiment, three replicate groups of juveniles (average weight 1.4 g) were fed diets with or without Pophyra powder for 7 weeks. Survival rate and weight gain were not significantly affected by dietary Pophyra powder (P>0.05). Feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the Pophyra diet were significantly lower than those of fish fed the control diet (P<0.05). The results of these experiments suggest that feed efficiency of juvenile flounder may be improved by dietary supplementation with wasabi extract.

A $3{\times}2$ factorial experiment was conducted to determine the effects of dietary protein and lipid levels on the growth and body composition of juvenile far eastern catfish. Six diets were formulated to contain three levels of protein (20%, 30% and 40%) and two levels of lipid (9% and 17%). Triplicate groups of fish (initial body weight of 7.6 g) were hand-fed to apparent satiation for 66 days. Final mean weight was improved with increasing dietary protein and lipid levels, and the highest final mean weight was observed in fish fed the 40/17 (% protein/% lipid) diet. No significant difference was observed in final mean weight for fish fed between 30/17 diet and 40/9 diet. Feed efficiency of fish fed the diets containing over 30% protein levels with 9% and 17% lipid levels were significantly higher than those of fish fed the 20% protein levels. Feed efficiency of fish fed the 30/17 diet was not significantly different from that of fish fed the 40/9 diet or 40/17 diet. Feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the 20% protein diets with 17% lipid level were significantly higher than those of fish fed 9% lipid diet. Daily feed intake of fish tended to decrease with increasing dietary protein and lipid levels. Moisture content of whole body in fish fed the 9% lipid diets was significantly higher than that of fish fed the 17% lipid diets at the same protein level, but the opposite trends were found for crude lipid content. Significant effects of dietary lipid were observed for most fatty acids, according to their relative values in the diets. The results of this study suggest that the protein requirement for maximum growth of juvenile far eastern catfish may be higher than 40%, and an increase of dietary lipid level from 9% to 17% can improve growth and feed utilization.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of broilers and layers fed locally produced fish waste meal (LFWM) in Western Samoa. LFWM, which was produced by mincing and oven drying of rejects from filleted fish, was included in both broiler and layer diets at the complete expense of imported meat and bone meal (MBM). The experiments were of a completely randomised design. In experiment 1, 120 day-old Strabro broiler chicks were raised to 49 days of ages. In experiment 2, 80 Shaver 288 pullets, 20 weeks of age, were housed in pairs in cages and raised up to 72 weeks of age. There were no differences (p > 0.05) in performance of broilers as measured in terms of final bodyweights, feed intake, feed efficiency and carcass yield between the two diets. Similarly, no differences (p > 0.05) existed in egg production, egg weight and feed required per kilogramme of eggs. It is concluded that LFWM is nutritionally as good as imported MBM and could be used to completely replace MBM in broiler and layer diets.
This study was carried out to evaluate the use of fermented skipjack tuna viscera (FSTV) as an alternative for fish meal in juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) diets. Lactobacillus bulgaricus was used as a starter for fermentation of skipjack tuna viscera. Four isonitrogenous (49% crude protein) and isocaloric (4 kcal/g DM) diets were formulated to contain graded levels (0, 5, 10, and 15%) of FSTV. Each experimental diet was fed three replicate groups (40 fish per tank) of juvenile flounder (average weight, $3.3\pm0.2$ g) for 5 weeks. At the end of feeding experiment, inclusion of FSTV up to 15% in diets did not affect survival rate (%) and weight gain of fish. Feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio, protein and lipid retentions of fish fed the diet containing 10% FSTV were higher than those of fish fed the control diet (P<0.05). The values of fish fed the diet containing 15% FSTV were not different from those of fish fed other diets. Whole body lipid content of fish fed the diet containing 10% FSTV was higher than that of fish fed the diet containing 15% FSTV and control diet. The present results indicate that fermented skipjack tuna viscera could partially replace fish meal in juvenile flounder feed, and the inclusion of 10% FSTV may be efficient in improving the feed utilization of fish.
A feeding trial of four dietary protein levels (20, 30, 40, and 50%) and two lipid levels (7 and 14%) with a factorial design was conducted to determine the optimal dietary protein and lipid levels for juvenile Israeli carp Cyprinus carpio. Triplicate groups of fish (average body weight, $1.3{\pm}0.02g$) were fed the experimental diets for 9 weeks. Survival of fish was not affected by either dietary protein or dietary lipid level. Weight gain and feed efficiency increased as dietary protein levels increased up to 40 and 50%, respectively. Weight gain was higher in fish fed the high-lipid diets with 20 and 40% protein content. Feeding efficiency increased as the dietary lipid level increased for the 30, 40, and 50% protein diets. Daily feed intake decreased with increasing protein level and the minimum feed consumption was observed in fish fed the 50% protein diet with 14% lipid content. Moisture and lipid contents of the whole body were affected by both dietary protein and lipid levels. The crude lipid content of fish fed the 14% lipid diet was higher than that of fish fed the 7% lipid diet at each protein level. The results of this study indicate that a diet containing 40% protein with 14% lipid content is optimal for the growth and effective protein utilization of juvenile Israeli carp.
Overinflation of cardiac stomach occurred in farmed sterlet sturgeon (Acipenser ruthenus) fingerlings. Affected fish congregated and swam upside-down near the edges of the tanks with abdominal distension. When pressed the dilated abdomen, the fish often exhibited a normal swimming pattern for some time, then resumed their characteristic upside-down swimming patterns. Internally, the fish showed abdominal dropsy and dilated stomach filled with yellowish granular contents. When the contents in the stomach, fish feed, water and excrement in the farm inoculated on Sabouraud destrose agar (SDA) at $25^{\circ}C$ for 48 hr. Candida sp. were isolated except from the feed. Candida sp. in excrement or water in the farm may enter into the stomach with feed and then produce gases in the metabolic process, which in turn may cause the stomach overinflation.
The effects of feeding frequency on the growth, food consumption, body composition, and hematological response of the Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegelii were investigated for 77 days at ambient water temperatures (17.2-24.5℃) in a sea cage in Tongyeong, Korea. Three replicate groups of fish were hand-fed to satiation with a commercial diet in one of four different feeding frequency trials (one meal every 2 days, and one, two and three meals per day). At the end of the experiment, the mean weight gain, specific growth rate, and daily feed intake of fish fed one and two meals per day were significantly higher than those of fish fed one meal every 2 days or three meals per day. The feed efficiency of the fish fed three meals per day was significantly lower than that of the fish in the other groups. The glucose concentration of fish fed one meal every 2 days was significantly higher than that of the other groups. We conclude that the optimum feeding frequency for improving the growth of Korean rockfish weighing 100-200 g reared in sea cages is one meal per day under our experimental conditions.
The present study was conducted to investigate a supplemental effect of magnesium hydrogen phosphate (MHP, $MgHPO_4$) as an alternative phosphorus (P) source on growth and feed utilization of juvenile far eastern catfish (Silurus asotus) in comparison with three conventional P additives (monocalcium phosphate (MCP), dicalcium phosphate (DCP) and tricalcium phosphate [TCP]) as positive controls. A basal diet as a negative control was prepared without P supplementation and four supplemental P sources were added at the level of 2%. Five groups of 450 fish having mean body weight of 11.3 g following 24 h fasting after three week adaptation period were randomly distributed into each of 15 tanks (30 fish/tank). Fish were hand-fed to apparent satiety twice a day for 8 weeks. Fish fed MHP had weight gain (WG), protein efficiency ratio and specific growth rate comparable to those fed MCP. Fish fed MHP and MCP had feed efficiency (FE) significantly higher (p<0.05) than those fed DCP. Fish groups fed control and TCP showed the lower FE than the other groups which was significantly different (p<0.05) from those of fish fed the other diets. Survival rate was not significantly different (p>0.05) among treatments. Fish fed control had the lowest hematocrit, which was significantly different (p<0.05) from that of fish fed MHP. Fish fed MCP and MHP had plasma P higher (p<0.05) than fish fed the other diets. Relative efficiencies of MCP, DCP and TCP to MHP were found to be 100.5 and 101.3%, 92.0 and 91.6%, and 79.1 and 80.9% for WG and FE, respectively. P availability was determined to be 88.1%, 75.2%, 8.7%, and 90.9% for MCP, DCP, TCP, and MHP, respectively. Consequently, MHP recovered from wastewater stream showed that as an alternative P source its performance was comparative with MCP on growth and feed utilization of juvenile far eastern catfish.
This study was examined the microbiological adequacy of fish feed treated with high-dose irradiation (5 kGy). 125 flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) were grouped into 5 and then the fishes were fed the following feeds for 28 days: (1)standard feed; (2)standard feed, inoculated with Edwardsiella tarda ($1{\times}10^8-1{\times}10^9CFU/g$ of feed); (3)standard feed, inoculated with Vibrio anguilarum ($1{\times}10^8-1{\times}10^9CFIT/g$ of feed); (4)standard feed, inoculated with Streptococcus faecalis ($1{\times}10^8-1{\times}10^9CFU/g$ of feed); (5)standard feed, inoculated with Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio anguillarum and Streptococcus faecalis, and then irradiated the mixed feed to 5 kGy. The flounders feed the mixed diet with Edwardsiella tarda, Wbrio anguillarum or Streptococcus faecalis inoculated feed were showed severe cumulative mortalities of 60, 48 and 52% respectively. The gross and histological changes were observed on the fishes. However, fishs fed with the feed of bacteria inoculation before irradiation demonstrated excellent protection against the bacteria-related disease. The results from experiments with bacteria inoculated feed indicated that the irradiation methods employed were capable of preventing contamination of the fishs with pathogenic bacteria.
