In the study, test was carried out to compare the flame retardant performance for the specimen of MDF wood to which field flame retardant treatment (post processing flame retardant) is applied, which is coated with flame retardant film of 5 companies, locally distributed, and MDF wood (nontreated, flame retardant film non-coated) to which aqueous or oil-based fire-retardant paint is applied. As a result of combustion test of MDF wood which was coated with flame retardant film of 5 companies, 2 products showed suitable values in 4 criteria, but other 3 products showed 10~40 % disqualification rate. In regard of characteristics of fire-retardant paint, oil-based fire-retardant paint is better than aqueous fire-retardant paint in flame retardant performance criteria, but MDF wood to which oilbase fire-retardant paint was applied was shown to have higher toxicity index grade than MDF wood to which aqueous fire-retardant paint was applied relatively.
The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the flame retardant performance of Japanese cypress(Chamaecyparis obtusa) plywood, commonly used in indoor decoration, furniture, and tableware, by treating it with three different fire retardants with different primary ingredients. The experiment was conducted in compliance with Article 31, Paragraph 2 of the Enforcement Decree of the Fire Facilities Installation and Management Act and Articles 4 and 7-2 of the Flame Retardant Performance Standards. After flame time, after glow time, char length, and char area were measured. As a result, first, after flame time was measured at 0 seconds regardless of whether the flame retardant treatment was applied. Second, after glow time was relatively long, measuring 22.7 seconds without treatment, which is likely due to the weak fire resistance and high concentration of carbon monoxide generated by the chemical characteristics of the Japanese cypress itself. Third, it was confirmed that the effects of the primary ingredient, phosphorus, in the flame retardant treatment varied depending on the technological development of the manufacturers of the same species of Japanese cypress plywood. In the future, it is expected that the results of this study will provide fundamental data to select flame retardant treatments that show high flame retardant performance according to the botanical characteristics of the wood.

This study was conducted to examine the functionality of the fire retardant treated wood. The hygroscopic property, leaching resistance, metal corrosive efficacy and gas toxicity of retardant treated wood were analyzed. Sodium silicate was penetrated to the wood for making fire retardant treated wood. The subsequent treatment agents such as boric acid, ammonium borate, di-ammonium phosphate were treated after sodium silicate treatment due to fixation. As results for the test, the leaching resist was improved by subsequent treatment. The fire retardant combination such as sodium silicate, boric acid and di-ammonium phosphate showed high hygroscopic property, metal corrosive efficacy. The gas toxicity was also satisfied KS standard.
This study presents a treatment of suitable flame retardant through evaluating fire performance after treating flame retardant of fibers for development of welding blanket. The experimental samples used were commercial fibers and we are treated fibers with the flame retardant liquid and the flame retardant paint. The fire performance of the sample was carried out according to the Korea and Japan Standard. As the results of the fire performance experiment, the treated fiber in samples had enough in the performance of flame and fire retardant and the grade of their was from grade A to grade C according to flame and fire retardant standard. The lower oxygen index indicated that all treated samples with the resist are satisfied with international standard. We con-sider that the welding blanket treated with grade A, B and C performance prevents fire spread regardless of the height of work stairs in the case of installation horizontally. Also, it is considered that the welding blanket treated with grade C performance prevents fire spread regardless of the height of work stairs in the case of installation vertically.
This study was performed to evaluate the burning characteristics of wood-based materials and the effect of surface treatment of fire retardant using cone calorimeter. Four types of wood-based materials, such as Plywood, Oriented Strand Board (OSB), Particle Board (PB) and Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), were tested at a constant heat flux of $50kW/m^2$ to investigate the time to ignition, mass loss rate, heat release rate, effective heat of combustion, etc. In addition, each type of wood-based material was tested at the same heat flux after fire retardant treatment on the surface to evaluate the effect of this treatment on the burning characteristics. The surface treatment of fire retardant, by the amount of $110g/m^2$, delayed the time to ignition almost twice. However, it was indicated that heat release rate, mass loss rate, and effective heat of combustion were not significantly affected by fire retardants treatment for all types of wood-based materials.
To prepare the eco-friendly fire retardant wood, Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), and Radiata pine (Pinus radiata) were treated with inorganic chemicals, such as sodium silicate, boric acid, ammonium phosphate, and ammonium borate. Different combination and concentration of those chemicals were impregnated by vacuum/pressure treatment methods. The electron-beam treatment was used to increase the chemical penetration into the wood. The fire performance of the fire retardant treated wood was investigated. The penetration of chemicals into the wood was enhanced after electron beam treatment. Ignition time of the treated wood was the most effectively retarded by sodium silicate, ammonium phosphate, and ammonium borate. The most effective chemical combination was found at 50% sodium silicate and 3% ammonium borate, which satisfied flammability criteria for a fire retardant material in the KS F ISO 5660-1 standards.
This study was carried out to make hardboard fire retardants and to examine the properties of the hard-board treated with them. The fire retardant treatment was achieved by surface impregnation of water soluble retardant chemicals into the forming mat with 55 percent of moisture content. followed by the hot pressing process. Ammonium monophosphate, ammonium diphosphate, sodium borate, and boric acid were used as the fire retardants. Fire retardant test was carried out by using the differential thermal analysis thermogram. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Fire retardant-treated hardboard showed higher values of the specific gravity. water absoption, and flexural strength than those of untreated hardboard. Especially, the treatment of ammonium monophosphate gave the best results in the flexural strength, and a 10 gr/$ft^2$ loading of the fire retardant compound of ammonium monophoshate, ammonium diphosphate, and sodium borate drew the best flexural strength value among the three different experimental loadings of 10, 20 and 30 gr/$ft^2$. 2. There were no definite differences in moisture content between the fire retardant-treated hardboard and the untreated hardboard. 3. The fire retardant compound of ammonium monophosphate, ammonium diphosphate, and sodium borate resulted in the best fire retardancy, and its fire retardancy was increased in proportion to the increase of loading.
In this study, I evaluated toxicity that analyze performance of flame-retardant about flame-retardant painting wood and combustion gas that is based on the toxicity index. Processing condition of flame retardant solution and treatment method of samples didn't affect greatly to performance of flame retardant. Occurrence of combustion gas showed a almost similar result from the sample which spraying flame retardant solution and toxicity corresponds to high level, Hazard Class III, and the flame retardant solution saturation sample which makes put out Hazard Class II which is a low toxicity relatively.
The purpose of this study was to examines the burning rate of fire retardant treated wood in the cone heater with a one-dimensional integral model. The wood samples used in this study were four species. The species of woods are Redwood, White oak, Douglas fir and Maple. Each sample was nominally 50mm thick and 100mm square. Samples were exposed to a range of incident heat fluxes 10 to $35kW/m^2$ using the cone heater. A one-dimension integral model has been used to predict burning rate, heat of gasification, flame heat fluxes, charring rate and char depth of samples. As a result measurement of mass loss rate, softwoods(Redwood and Douglas fir) has relatively low value than those for hardwoods(White oak and Maple). Average charring rate of woods in case of fire retardant treatment showed reduction effect of 41.29%, 50.00%, 48.18% and 60.82% for Redwood, Douglas fir, White fir and Maple, respectively. Almost all the predictions from integral model showed faster charring than those measured. Average difference between predictions and experimental data was 16%, 9.5% and 11.8% for N, F1 and F2 respectively. Water-soluble fire retardant used in this study find out more effect in hardwood than softwood from the result of measurement of mass loss rate and average charring rate.
Consumer demand for wood use has diversified recently. Laminated wood has been used for large-scale buildings and public buildings, not only the durability but also the demand for fire safety has increased. In this study. it was performed for the purpose of developing a standard and flame-retardant treatment technology suitable for structural laminated wood, which was prepared in domestic larch. In this study, by using the domestic larch and Korean pine lumber which treated with flame-retardants, to manufacture the glulam, the effect of strength properties were investigated. In the case of fire retardant treated larch Glulam was satisfactory conditions of the strength of structural laminated wood, but had to be improved, such as the occurrence of delamination and decrease strength by the flame retardant treatment. Development of application-type flame retardant treatment technology or injection-type flame retardant treatment after production of laminated lumber were required.
