A performance-based design of smoke management systems for semiconductor fabrication facilities is described in this paper. The example of one such facility is discussed. Performance criteria for smoke control systems were established, effective smoke removal system features were identified and optimal system exhaust capacity requirements were developed by applying engineering tools including Fire Dynamic Simulator model. Considering the fact that the absence of relevant design guide, codes for consensus standards for semiconductor smoke design in Korea and United States this performance based approach can and should be applied to other fabrication facilities designs.

In case of fire in a compartmentalized building area, a number of casualties are caused by smoke production. Accordingly, openings, penetrations and joints in compartmentalized spaces should be secured not only for fire resistance but also for smoke-proofing. However, domestic test regulations stipulate test methods for refractory performance of penetrations and joints, but do not specify separate deferral performance. In the case of openings, the test for the smoke performance exists at room temperature, but the smoke performance at high temperature is not secured, so countermeasures are needed.
Smoke control in il space 10 m${\times}$3 m floor and 5.4 m high around the stairway of a subway station platform was simulated by using FDS to investigate problems of smoke control in Daegue subway stations. Distributions of temperature and smoke particles, and variation of the number of particles with time for a 200 ㎾ polyurethane fire were compared. It was shown that the purge system fails to remove smoke efficiently and that the extraction system has the highest perfor-mance among the three smoke control systems for the given situations. Simply switching the purge system into extraction mode might improve much the smoke removal performance.
In this study, we calculated the smoke movement at the fire area of the refuge floor which has the refuge safety area in case of fire in the high rise building by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code of FLUENT (ver. 13.0). The buoyancy plume was applied using the temperature and flow velocity which represent 10 MW heat release rate in order to describe the fire, and the smoke movement was predicted using a species conservation equation. The pressurization system of smoke control was adopted with smoke control damper in refuge safety area, at the result, it is confirmed that the damper capacity was enough to smoke control in which the flow rate of supply was applied 25 $m^3/s$ in the case of the door at fire area opened only, and 50 $m^3/s$ in the doors at the fire area and lobby both opened case. They were satisfied in NFSC 501-A. Even though the door of fire area closed, there were smoke leakages at the gap between the door and wall. In addition, the refugee could be isolated in the fire area when the door of fire area closed during smoke control in the case of using the high damper flow rate of supply, 50 $m^3/s$. Therefore the proper damper flow rate of supply are needed in order to prevent the damage of refugee and this study proposes the suitable condition of damper capacity according to refuge scenario.
This paper aims to evaluate the effects that presence, installation number and capacity of ventilation vent and presence of multiple fire sources have on the behaviour of smoke temperature induced by vehicle fire in road tunnel. Six types of scenarios were assumed and FDS was ran to simulate them. As the number of ventilation vents increases, the smoke temperature are calculated to be reduced, but it is shown that effects exerted by two ventilation vents are almost similar to ones by three ventilation vents. Capacity of ventilation vent has a greater impact on the reduction of smoke temperature than installation number of ventilation vents. Smoke temperatures computed for all scenarios except for scenario No. 1 (without ventilation vent) and scenario No. 6 (with multiple fire sources) above fire source are analyzed to be under $400^{\circ}C$ and it means that the radiation of smoke layer above fire source doesn't induce the ignition of materials around fire source.
Amid the growing number of high-rise complex buildings in Korea, efficient smoke prevention technology in a fire is required and as an alternative of a mechanical smoke control system in high-rise buildings, the use of a smoke control system using sandwich pressurization has been on the rise. In such a system, the appropriate pressure difference and the data for designing the air supply and exhaust flow rate are necessary to prevent the spread of smoke and offer a tenable evacuation environment. As part of such effort, this paper presents a field test process and result after testing a building where such a smoke control system using sandwich pressurization has been installed. A ventilation rate of 6 cycles per hour were applied to simulate the air exhaust flow rate on a fire floor and the air supply flow rate on the floors above and below the fire floor. As a result of the system operation, pressure difference of approximately 260 Pa between the 12th floor of a fire and the 13th floor was generated. The over pressure of the experiment has a serious effect on the evacuation or fire compartment so that it is necessary to examine the improvement.
Fire detectors play an important role in alerting the related people to the initial stages of fire to protect assets and life. Therefore, the performance in detecting fires in the early stages without the risk of false alarms is important. Owing to a recent revision of the national fire safety standards to install smoke detectors in living rooms used for sleeping, staying, hospitalizing in apartment house/efficiency apartment/lodging facility/medical facility/facility for elderly and young, the application of smoke detectors is increasing. On the other hand, there is lack of research in preventing false alarms. This study improved algorithms to prevent false alarms in analog photoelectric smoke detector's due to sudden dust and better classify pollution and fire signals through a self-compensatory function. Through this study, alternatives are suggested to reduce the number of false alarms of Analog Photoelectric smoke detectors, and prevent financial losses due to false alarms.
This study aims to address the fire characteristics of Double-skin facade using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). To end this, Double-skin facade was classified into the four structures, that is Box, Shaft-box, Corridor, Multistory, through PyroSim program which was based on FDS, and further each structure of fire characteristics were analyzed numerically as well as comparatively in the current study. This study also examined smoke movement, smoke density, smoke detectors, and visibility in order to closely identify the each structure of fire characteristics. The results of the study discovered that the Box structure did not significantly affect smoke which was rising in the other rooms, except for the fire room whereas the Corridor structure had positive effects on Double-skin facade horizontally. In addition, the Shaft-box structure showed the fastest vertical movement by means of the shaft, on the other hand, rising smoke influenced the other rooms as well. The Multistory structure along with rising smoke had a great impact on the other divided rooms in a vertical way.

In this study, combustion and smoke release characteristics of a non-class 1E cable for nuclear power plants were investigated according to aging period. The aging was reproduced through an accelerated aging method for interval of 10 years :10, 20, 30 and 40 year, which was applied the Arrhenius equation. The cable was subjected to accelerated aging. In order to understand combustion and smoke release characteristics, the cone calorimeter test was performed according to the standard code of KS F ISO 5660-1. Heat release rate, mass loss rate, average rate of heat emission and smoke production rate were examined through cone calorimeter test. Fire performance index, fire growth index and smoke factor were derived from test results for the comparison of quantitative fire risk. When comparing the fire performance index and the fire growth index, the early fire risk tends to decrease as aging progresses, which might be attributed from the fact that the volatile substances of cables were evaporated. However, when comparing the heat release rate, average rate of heat emission and mass loss rate, which represent the mid and late periods of the fire risk, the values of accelerated aging cables were much higher than those of non-aged cable, which signifies the unstable formation of the char layer resulted in the change in the performance of flame retardants. In addition, the results from the smoke characteristics show that the accelerated aging cables were lager than the non-aged cables in terms of overall fire risk. These results can be used as baseline data when assessing fire risk of cables and establishing fire safety code for nuclear power plants.
The smoke filling process for the atrium space containing a fire source is simulated using two types of deterministic fire models : Zone model and Field model. The zone model used is the CFAST(version 1.6) model developed at the Building and Fire Research Laboratories, NIST in the USA. The field model is a self-developed fire field model based on Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) theories. This article is focused on finding out the smoke movement and temperature distribution in atrium space which is cubic in shape. A computational procedure for predicting velocity and temperature distribution in fire-induced flow is based on the solution, in finite volume method and non-staggered grid system, of 3-dimensional equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy, species and so forth. The fire model i. e. Zone model and Field model predicted similar results for the clear height and the smoke layer temperature.
