The artificial discs have recently used to preserve the motion of the treated segment in lumbar spine surgery. However, there have been lack of biomechanical information of the artificial discs to explain current clinical controversies such as long-term results of implant wear and excessive facet contact forces. In this study, we investigated the biomechanical effects of three artificial implants on the lumbar spinal segments by finite element analysis. The finite element model of intact lumbar spine(L1-S) was developed and the three implants were inserted in L4-L5 segment of the spine model. 5 Nm of flexion and extension moments were applied on the superior plate of L1 with 400 N of compressive load. Excessive motions and high facet contact forces at the surgical level were generated in the all three implanted models. In the flexion, the peak von-Mises stresses in the semi-constrained type implant was higher than those in the un-constrained type implant which would cause wear on the polyethylene core. The results of the study would provide a biomechanical guideline for selecting optimal surgical approach or evaluating the current design of the implants, or developing a new implant.
This paper develops a finite element model for frontal crash analysis of a large-sized truck. It is composed of 220 parts, 70,041 nodes and 69,073 elements. This paper explains only major parts' models in detail such as frame, cab, floor, and bumper which affect on crash analysis a lot. In order to prevent penetration not only at a part itself but also between parts, all contact areas are defined using type-36, self-impact type. The developed model's reliability is validated by comparing simulation and crash test results. The results used for model validation are vehicle pulses at B-pillar, and frame and deformation of frame and cab. The frontal crash simulation is performed with the same conditions as crash test. And, it is performed using PAM-CRASH installed in super-computer SP2. The developed model whose reliability is verified may be used as a base to develop a finite element model for occupant behavior and injury coefficient analysis.
A coupled method, that combines the Ritz method and the finite element (FE) method, is proposed to solve the vibration problem of rectangular thin and thick plates with general boundary conditions. The eigenvalue partial differential equation(s) of the plate is (are) first reduced to a set of eigenvalue ordinary differential equations by the application of the Ritz method. The resulting eigenvalue differential equations are then reduced to an eigenvalue algebraic equation system using the finite element method. The natural boundary conditions of the plate problem including the free edge and free corner boundary conditions are also implemented in a simple and accurate manner. Various boundary conditions including simply supported, clamped and free boundary conditions are considered. Comparisons with existing numerical and analytical solutions show that the proposed mixed method can produce highly accurate results for the problems considered using a small number of Ritz terms and finite elements. The proposed mixed Ritz-FE formulation is also compared with the mixed FE-Ritz formulation which has been recently proposed by the present author and his co-author. It is found that the proposed mixed Ritz-FE formulation is more efficient than the mixed FE-Ritz formulation for free vibration analysis of rectangular plates with Levy-type boundary conditions.
Manufacturing bulk nanostructured materials with least grain growth from initial powders is challenging because of the bottle neck of bottom-up methods using the conventional powder metallurgy of compaction and sintering. In this study, bottom-up type powder metallurgy processing and top-down type SPD (Severe Plastic Deformation) approaches were combined in order to achieve both real density and grain refinement of metallic powders. ECAP (Equal Channel Angular Pressing), one of the most promising processes in SPD, was used for the powder consolidation method. For understanding the ECAP process, investigating the powder density as well as internal stress, strain distribution is crucial. We investigated the consolidation and plastic deformation of the metallic powders during ECAP using the finite element simulations. Almost independent behavior of powder densification in the entry channel and shear deformation in the main deformation zone was found by the finite element method. Effects of processing parameters on densification and density distributions were investigated.

In this paper, a spectral finite element method for a rectangular sandwich plate with viscoelastic core having the Levy-type boundary conditions has been plated. The sandwich plate consists of two isotropic and elastic face plates with a surfaced-bonded viscoelastic core. For the analysis, the in-plane and transverse energy in the face plates and only shear energy in the core are considered, respectively. To account for the frequency dependent complex shear modulus of the viscoelastic core, the Golla-Hughes-McTavish model is adopted. To evaluate the validity and accuracy of the proposed method, the frequency response function and dynamic responses of the sandwich plate with all edges simply supported subject to an impact load are calculated and compared with those calculated by a finite element method. Though these calculations, it is confirmed that the proposed method is very reliable and efficient one for vibration analysis of a rectangular sandwich plate with viscoelastic core having the Levy-type boundary conditions.
In clinical orthopaedics, bone resoption in the cortex is often seen post operatively on X-rays or bone densitometry after total hip replacement (THR) in the form of cortical osteoporosis or atropy. Stress shielding of bone occurs, when a load, normally carried by the bone alone, is shared with an implant as a result, the bone stresses are abnormal and with remodelling analysis this may cause extensive proximal bone resoption, possibly weakening the bone bed to the point of failure. The author made finite element models of the cemented and non-cemented type implanted femoral stem with bone resorption of the proximal medial femur and studied the feed back effect of the various degree of bone resoption to THR system by parametric analysis on the stress of the femoral stem and interface. The results of the present finite element analysis implied that the extent of proximal bone resorption has the effect of more increasing stress on the distal stem tip, cement mantle and interface in both type of femoral stem and this high distal stress possibly can cause the mechanical failure of loosening or failure after THR.

Knowing a material's true stress-strain curve is essential for performing a nonlinear finite element analysis to solve an elastoplastic problem. This study presents a simple methodology to determine the true stress-strain curve of type 304 and 316 austenitic stainless steels in the full range of strain from a typical tensile test. Before necking, the true stress and strain values are directly converted from engineering stress and strain data, respectively. After necking, a true stress-strain equation is determined by iteratively conducting finite element analysis using three pieces of information at the necking and the fracture points. The Hockett-Sherby equation is proposed as an optimal stress-strain model in a non-uniform deformation region. The application to the stainless steel under different temperatures and loading conditions verifies that the strain hardening behavior of the material is adequately described by the determined equation, and the estimated engineering stress-strain curves are in good agreement with those of experiments. The presented method is intrinsically simple to use and reduces iterations because it does not require much experimental effort and adopts the approach of determining the stress-strain equation instead of correcting the individual stress at each strain point.
The seismic responses of elevated tanks considering liquid-structure interaction are presented under horizontal earthquake. The scaled model tank is fabricated to study the dynamic responses of anchored tank and newly designed uplift tank with replaced dampers. The natural frequencies for structural mode are obtained by modal analysis. The dynamic responses of tanks are completed by finite element method, which are compared with the results from experiment. The displacement parallel and perpendicular to the excitation direction are both gained as well as structural acceleration. The strain of tank walls and the axial strain of columns are also obtained afterwards. The seismic responses of liquid storage tank can be calculated by the finite element model effectively and the results match well with the one measured by experiment. The aim is to provide a new type of tank system with vertical constraint relaxed which leads to lower stress level. With the liquid volume increasing, the structural fundamental frequency has a great reduction and the one of uplift tank are even smaller. Compared with anchored tank, the displacement of uplift tank is magnified, the strain for tank walls and columns parallel to excitation direction reduces obviously, while the one perpendicular to earthquake direction increases a lot, but the values are still small. The stress level of new tank seems to be more even due to uplift effect. The new type of tank can realize recoverable function by replacing dampers after earthquake.

In this paper, a coupled-line type waveguide bandpass filter is newly proposed. The proposed bandpass filter configuration consists of magnetically coupled waveguide cavities. In order to show the background of the proposed waveguide bandpass filter, the general coupled line TEM bandpass filter theory, which means the coupled line filter with arbitrary coupled line length and impedance level, will be briefly introduced. Calculations for the even- and odd-mode wave impedance of a coupled line waveguide structure are achieved based on the normalized impedance concept for a broad-side coupled waveguides by using vector finite element method(VFEM) calculation. Measured result of an implemented coupled-line type waveguide filter is presented.
