A mixed type finite element method is applied to the nonuniform shear warping beam theory which is very useful for the structural analysis of thin-walled sectional beams considering the shear deformation. As known generally, it is shown that the mixed type finite element method, compared with the displacement type one, can give more balanced accuracy of results in calculating the stresses and displacements of the structure. In this paper, one typical example, the flexural-torsional problem of a discontinuously variable sectional beam under coupled end torsional moments, is selected and analyzed to validate the usefulness of the developed beam element.

This paper presented an evaluation method for the efficiency uncertainty of an inverter-fed three-phase induction motor using FEM. The motor efficiency in the FEM is calculated by the IEC 60034-2-3 as in the actual test. In the process of evaluating the efficiency uncertainty, the difference between the finite element method and the actual test is the method of calculating the type-A / B standard uncertainty of the input quantity to estimate the efficiency and each losses. For the input quantities which can confirm the instantaneous values with respect to time, the type-A standard uncertainty in the FEM is calculated from the RMS values or average values having separate periods in the steady state. And, the type-B standard uncertainty in the finite element method is assumed to be zero. Also, this paper compared and analyzed the efficiency uncertainty evaluated by the proposed method and the efficiency uncertainty through the actual test.
FormWorks-Plus is a generalized public domain user-friendly preprocessor developed to facilitate the process of creating finite element models for structural analysis programs. The lack of a graphical user interface in most academic analysis programs forces users to input the structural model information into the standard text files, which is a time-consuming and error-prone process. FormWorks-Plus enables engineers to conveniently set up the finite element model in a graphical environment, eliminating the problems associated with conventional input text files and improving the user's perception of the application. In this paper, a brief overview of the FormWorks-Plus structure is presented, followed by a detailed explanation of the main features of the program. In addition, demonstration is made of the application of FormWorks-Plus in combination with VecTor programs, advanced nonlinear analysis tools for reinforced concrete structures. Finally, aspects relating to the modelling and analysis of three case studies are discussed: a reinforced concrete beam-column joint, a steel-concrete composite shear wall, and a SFRC shear panel. The unique mixed-type frame-membrane modelling procedure implemented in FormWorks-Plus can address the limitations associated with most frame type analyses.

The purpose of this study was to compare the v-shape thread with the square shape thread of fixture in the view of stress distribution pattern using finite element stress analysis. The finite element model was designed with the parallel placement of two standard fixtures(4.0 mm diameter ${\times}$ 11.5 mm length) on the region of mandibular 1st and 2nd molars. Three dimensional finite element model was created with the components of the implant and surrounding bone. This study simulated loads of 200 N at the central fossa in a axial direction (load A), 200 N at the buccal offset load that is 2 mm apart from central fossa in a axial direction (load B), 200 N at the buccal offset load that was 4 mm apart from central fossa in a axial direction (load C). These forces of load A',B',C' were applied to a $15^{\circ}$ inward oblique direction at that same site with 200 N. Von Mises stress values were recorded and compared in the supporting bone, fixture, and abutment screw. The following results have been made based on this study : 1. The highest stress concentration occurred at the cervical region of the implant fixture. 2. Von Mises stress value of off-site region was higher than that of central fossa region. 3. Square shape thread type showed more even stress distribution in the vertical and oblique force than V-shape thread type. 4. Stress distribution was the most effective in the case of buccal offset load (2, 4 mm distance from central fossa) in the square shape thread type. 5. V-shape thread type revealed higher von Mises stress value than square shape thread type in all environmental condition. The results from numerical analyses concluded that square shape thread type had the lower destructive stress and more stress distribution between the fixture and bone interface than V-shape thread type. Therefore, square shape thread type was regarded as optimal thread configuration in biomechanical concepts.
This study evaluated the influence of the type of restoration and the amount of interdental spacing on the stress distribution in maxillary central incisors restored by means of porcelain laminate veneers and direct composite resin restorations. Three-dimensional finite element models were fabricated to represent different types of restorations. Four clinical situations were considered. Type I, closing diastema using composite resin. Labial border of composite resin was extended just enough to cover the interdental space; Type II, closing diastema using composite resin without reduction of labial surface. Labial border of composite resin was extended distally to cover the half of the total labial surface; Type III, closing diastema using composite resin with reduction of labial surface. Labial border of the preparation and restored composite resin was extended distally two-thirds of the total labial surface; Type IV, closing diastema using porcelain laminate veneer with a feathered-edge preparation technique. Four different interdental spaces (1.0, 2.0. 3.0, 4.0 mm) were applied for each type of restorations. For all types of restoration, adding the width of free extension of the porcelain laminate veneer and composite resin increased the stress occurred at the bonding layer. The maximum stress values observed at the bonding layer of Type IV were higher than that of Type I, II and III. However, the increasing rate of maximum stress value of Type IV was lower than that of Type I, II and III.
This paper explores a series of numerical simulations of dynamic responses of multi-piles (dolphin) type substructures for 2.5MW class offshore wind turbine. Firstly computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was performed to evaluate wave loads on the dolphin type substructures with the design wave condition for the west-south region of Korea. Numerical wave tank (NWT) based on CFD was adopted to generate numerically a progressive regular wave using a virtual piston type wave maker. It was found that the water-piercing area of piles of the substructure is a key parameter determining the wave load exerted in horizontal direction. In the next the dynamic structural responses of substructure members under the wave load were calculated using finite element analysis (FEA). In the FEA approach, the dynamic structural responses were able to be calculated including a deformable body effect of substructure members when wave load on each member was determined by Morison's formula. The paper numerically identifies dynamic response characteristics of dolphin type substructures for 2.5MW class offshore wind turbine.
Complex and large lattice type structures are frequently used in design of bridge, tower, crane and aerospace structures. In general, in order to analyze these structures we have used the finite element method(FEM). This method is the most widely used and powerful method for structural analysis lately. However, it is necessary to use a large amount of computer memory and computational time because the FEM requires many degrees of freedom for solving dynamic problems exactly for these complex and large structures. For analyzing these structures on a personal computer, the authors developed the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). This method is based on the concept of the transfer of the nodal dynamic stiffness coefficient matrix which is related to force and displacement vector at each node. And we suggested TSCM for free vibration analysis of complex and large lattice type structures in the previous report. In this paper, we formulate forced vibration analysis algorithm for complex and large lattice type structures using extened TSCM. And we confirmed the validity of TSCM through computational results by the FEM and TSCM, and experimental results for lattice type structures with harmonic excitation.
This study analyzes the pull-out behavior of tunnel-type anchorage under various joint conditions, including joint direction, spacing, and position, using a finite element analysis. The validity of the numerical model was evaluated by comparing the results with a small-scaled model test, and the results of the numerical analysis and the small-scaled model test agree very well. The parametric study evaluated the quantitative effects of each influencing factor, such as joint direction, spacing, and position, on the behavior of tunnel-type anchorage using pull-out resistance-displacement curves. The study found that joint direction had a significant effect on the behavior of tunnel-type anchorage, and the pull-out resistance decreased as the displacement level increased from 0.002L to 0.006L (L: anchorage length). It was confirmed that the reduction in pull-out resistance increased as the number of joints in contact with the anchorage body increased and the spacing between the joints decreased. The pull-out behavior of tunnel-type anchorage was thus shown to be significantly influenced by the position and spacing of the rock joints. In addition, it is found that the number of joints through which the anchorage passes, the wider the area where the plastic point occurs, which leads to a decrease in the resistance of the anchorage.

Three-dimensional finite-element methods(FEM) have been used to analyze the thermal stress of an exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) cooler due to thermal and pressure load. Since efficiency and capability of the heat exchanger are mainly dependent on net heat transferring area of the EGR cooler system, the tube inside the system has a numerous dimples on the surface. Thus for finite element analysis, firstly the dimple-typed tube is modeled as a plain element without the dimple, and then the equivalent thermal conductivities and elastic modulus are calculated. This work describes the numerical homogenization procedure of the dimple-typed tube and verifies the equivalent material properties by comparison of a single unit and the actual full model. Finally, the homogenization scheme presented in this study can be efficiently applied to finite element analyses for the thermal stress and deformation behavior of the EGR cooler system with the dimple-typed tube.
This paper presents the analyzing method of golf shoes and shows design technique including air-cycled pump in the midsole. The golf shoes are analyzed by using the finite element method for the optimization in design by considering the configuration of midsole and outsole, which compose the golf shoes. Also the optimum size of air-cycled pump in the midsole is examined. Standard human pressure values for boundary conditions are adoped for the finite element analysis. The unknown constants of the strain energy function of Ogden type are observed in accordance with the axial tension test. By using the commercial FEM software for nonlinear analysis, MARC V7.3, the strains and the values of volume change for midsole and outsole are obtained, respectively. As a result, it can be concluded that these values in the midsole and the outsole are different depending on the characteristic of elastomer. More precise investigation about the assembly of two parts, which represent midsole and outsole, is under studying.
