  • This study develops a shaft analysis model for the optimization of the power transmission system. The finite element method was used for the shaft analysis model. The shaft and gear were assumed Timoshenko beams. Strength was evaluated according to DIN 743, and gear misalignment was calculated through ISO 6336 and the coordinate system rotation. The analysis software for a power transmission system was developed using Visual Studio 2019. The analysis results of the developed program were compared with those of commercial software (MASTA, KISSsoft, and Romax). We confirmed that the force, deformation, and safety factors at each node were the same as those of the commercial software. The absolute value of the gear misalignment of the developed program and commercial software was different. However, the gear misalignment tended to increase with increasing the displacement in the tooth width direction.

  • The major objective of the present paper is to estabilish analytical technique in order to closely understand and analyze the actual shearing process. First of all, isothermal and non-isothermal FE-simulation of the shearing process are carried out using finite element software DEFORM. Based on preliminary simulation using DEFORM, the finite element program to analyze two dimensional shearing process is developed. The ductile fracture criterion and the element kill method are also used to estimate if and where a fracture will occur and to investigate the features of the sheared surface in shearing process. It can be seen that the developed program combined with the ductile fracture criterion and element kill method has enabled the achievement of FE-simulation from initial stage to final stage of shearing process. The effects of punch-die clearance on shearing process are also investigated. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed technique the simulation results are compared with the known expermental data. It is found that the results of the present work are in close agreement with the published experimental results.

  • Since the preservation of monuments is very important to human societies, different methods are required to preserve historic structures. In this paper, 3D model of arch stone bridge at Pont Saint Martin, Aosta, Italy, was simulated by 1660 integrated separate stones using ABAQUS$^{(R)}$ software to investigate the seismic susceptibility of the bridge. The main objective of this research was to study a method of preservation of the historical stone bridge against possible earthquakes using FRP techniques. The nonlinear behavior model of materials used theory of plasticity based on Drucker-Prager yield criterion. Then, contact behavior between the block and mortar was modeled. Also, Seismosignal software was used to collect data related to 1976 Friuli Earthquake Italy, which constitutes a real seismic loading. The results show that, retrofitting of the arch stone bridge using FRP techniques decreased displacement of stones of spandrel walls, which prevents the collapse of stones.

  • In this paper, sensitivity analysis of the pantograph for the high-speed Train was conducted using finite element analysis method. Dynamic interaction of catenary-pantograph model was simulated by using a commercial finite element analysis software, SAMCEF. Pantograph was assumed to be three degree of freedom mass-spring-damper model and the pre-sag of the contact and messenger wire was implemented due to gravity. The span data of the actual high-speed line and specification of pantograph for high-speed train was applied in the analysis model, respectively. The reliability of the simulation model is verified by comparing the contact force results of simulation and test. Through the simulation, mean contact force and its deviation was evaluated and then sensitivity of the pantograph was analyzed.

  • In this study, the volumetric heat source in electron beam welding (EBW) is modeled through finite element method taking advantage of ABAQUS software package. Since this welding method is being applied in plates with different thicknesses and also considering that residual stresses reduce the strength of these weldments, the effect of thickness in the distribution and magnitude of residual stresses after welding is studied. Regarding the vast application of Inconel 706 super-alloy in aerospace industries, this material was selected in the current research. In order to validate the finite element model, the obtained results were compared to those of other researchers in this area, and good agreement was observed. The simulation results revealed that increase in the plate thickness leads to increase in the residual stresses. In addition heat treatment in the base metal (before welding) increases the residual stresses significantly.

  • New methods of visualizing the data from finite element analyses of 3-dimensional solids were developed in this study. Their efficiency and practicality were examined through their application and implementation into a finite element analysis software. The major effort of the study was to provide a way of representing data inside of volume, which is the most difficult problem in the postprocessing of 3-dimensional solids. Section representation, volume slice and separation, and isosurface representation were proposed for this purpose.

  • In this work, Internet Supercomputing methodology is introduced and the concept is materialized for large-scale finite element analysis. The primary resources of Internet Supercomputing are numerous idling PCs connected by Internet with no regards to their locations. Therefore, it becomes one of the most affordable ways to achieve supercomputing power unlimitedly if the appropriate parallel algorithm and the operating program are developed for this slow network environment. Under the above concept, virtual supercomputing system InterSup I is constructed and tested. To establish the InterSup I system, 64 CPU nodes, which are located in several places and connected by Internet, are conscripted, and parallel finite element software is developed for linear static analysis of structures based on the parallel multi-frontal algorithm. By the established InterSup I system, analysis of finite element structural model having around five million DOFs are solved to check the affordability and effectiveness of Internet Supercomputing.

  • Profile ring rolling process is simulated by using the general purpose commercial finite element analysis software MSC.Superform Because the deforming region is restricted to the vicinity of the roll gap, only a ring segment spanning the roll gap is analysed in order to save computation time and cost. A profile ring with an external round groove is chosen as an example to be analysed. The rolls with and without groove were analysed to compare the amount of side spread. It is found that the grooves in the rolls reduce the amount of side spread.

  • To reduce the cost of finite element analyses for sheet forming, a 3D hybrid membrane/shell method has been developed to study the springback of anisotropic sheet metals. In the hybrid method, the bending strains and stresses were analytically calculated as post-processing, using incremental shapes of the sheet obtained previously from the membrane finite element analysis. To calculate springback, a shell finite element model was used to unload the final shape of the sheet obtained from the membrane code and the stresses and strains that were calculated analytically. For verification, the hybrid method was applied to predict the springback of a 2036-T4 aluminum square blank formed into a cylindrical cup. The springback predictions obtained with the hybrid method was in good agreement with results obtained using a full shell model to simulate both loading and unloading and the experimentally measured data. The CPU time saving with the hybrid method, over the full shell model, was 75% for the punch stretching problem.
