A numerical approach combining the finite element method with two different stability criteria namely the Budiansky and the phase-plane buckling criteria is used to study the dynamic buckling phenomena of plate and shell structures subjected to sudden applied loading. In the finite element analysis an explicit time integration scheme is used and the two criteria are implemented in the Finite Element analysis. The dynamic responses of the plate and shell structures have been investigated for different values of the plate and shell imperfection factors. The results indicate that the dynamic buckling time, which is normally considered in predicting elasto-plastic buckling behavior, should be taken into consideration with the buckling criteria for elastic buckling analysis of plate and shell structures. By selecting proper control variables and incorporating them with two dynamic buckling criteria, the unique dynamic buckling load can be obtained and the problems of ambiguity and contradiction of dynamic buckling load of plate and shell structure can be resolved.

In the sheet metal forming process, the drawbead is used to control the flow of material during the forming process. The drawbead provides proper restraining force to the material and prevents defects such as wrinkling or breakage. For these reasons, many studies for designing the effective drawbead have been conducted. In this paper, the influence of the number of drawbead during the blank forming process will be introduced. For the analysis, the numerical method called the static-explicit finite element method was used. The finite element analysis code for this method has been developed and applied to the drawbead process problems. It is expected that this static-explicit finite element method could overcome heavy computation time and convergence problem due to the increase of drawbeads.
An improved finite element modeling technique is proposed for the assessment of load carrying capacity of partially prestressed concrete girder bridges. Based on the finite element method of analysis, shell and frame elements are used to model the slab and girders of the superstructure, respectively. In the modeling of superstructure, the emphasis is placed on the use of rigid link between the middle surface of slab an mid-plane of girder. This paper also includes the comparision of three different equations that are used in the calculation of effective moment of inertia for the partially prestressed concrete girders. Numerical analysis is performed for the unstrengthened and strengthened bridges. The obtained results are compared with those of load test for a prototype bridge. A good agreement is achieved between the numerical solutions by using the proposed method load test results.
An improved analysis model for material nonlinearity induced by elasto-plastic deformation and damage including a large strain response was proposed. The elasto-plastic-damage constitutive model based on the continuum damage mechanics approach was adopted to overcome limitations of the conventional plastic analysis theory. It can manage the anisotropic tonsorial damage evolved during the time-independent plastic deformation process of materials. Updated Lagrangian finite element formulation for elasto-plastic damage coupling problems including large deformation, large rotation and large strain problems was completed to develop a numerical model which can predict all kinds of structural nonlinearities and damage rationally. Finally a finite element analysis code for two-dimensional plane problems was developed and the applicability and validity of the numerical model was investigated through some numerical examples. Calculations showed reasonable results in both geometrical nonlinear problems due to large deformation and material nonlinearity including the damage effect.

In this paper, finite element with embedded discontinuous line is introduced in order to avoid the difficulties of adding new nodal points along with crack growth in discrete crack model. With the discontinuous element using discontinuous shape function, stiffness matrix of finite element is derived and dual mapping technique for numerical integration is employed. Using the finite element program made with employed algorithms, algorithm is verified and fracture analysis of simple concrete beam is performed.

In the present work a rigid-plastic finite element formulation using dynamic explicit time integration scheme is proposed for numerical analysis of auto-body panel stamping processes. The rigid-plastic finite element method based on membrane elements has long been employed as a useful numerical technique for the analysis of sheet metal forming because of its time effectiveness. A damping scheme is proposed in order to achieve a stable solution procedure in dynamic sheet forming problems. In order to improve the drawbacks of the conventional membrane elements, BEAM(abbreviated from Bending Energy Augmented Membrane) elements are employed. Rotational damping and spring about the drilling direction are introduced to prevent a zero energy mode. The lumping scheme is employed for the diagonal mass matrix and linearizing dynamic formulation. A contact scheme is developed by combining the skew boundary condition and the direct trial-and-error method. Computations are carried out for analysis of complicated auto-body panel stamping processes such as forming of an oilpan, a fuel tank and a front fender. The numerical results of explicit analysis are compared with the implicit results with good agreements and it is shown that the explicit scheme requires much shorter computational time, especially when the problem becomes more complicated. It is thus shown that the proposed dynamic explicit rigid-plastic finite element method enables an effective computation for complicated autobody panel stamping processes.

The mixed finite element analysis is the most widely used method for saturated porous media. Generally, in this method, direct method and iterative method are proposed to obtain unknown variable, however, the iterative method is recommended because the method provide numerical stability and accuracy under the material properties for solid and fluid are different. In this paper, we introduce staggered method which has strong numerical stability, and FETI(Finite Element Tearing and Interconnecting) which is one of decomposition methods are applied into the method in order to obtain numerical efficiency. In which, Lagrange Multipliers and conjugated gradient method to solve decomposed domain are proposed, and then, the proposed method is verified numerical efficiency by point to point MPI(Message Passing Interface) library.
A finite element formulation for the time-domain analysis of linear transient elastodynamic problems is presented based on the weak form obtained by applying the Galerkin's method to the integro-differential equations which contain the initial conditions implicitly and does not include the inertia terms. The weak form is extended temporally under the assumptions of the constant and linear time variations of field variables, since the time-stepping algorithms such as the Newmark method and the Wilson ${\theta}$-method are not necessary, obtaining two kinds of implicit finite element equations which are tested for numerical accuracy and convergency. Three classical examples having finite and infinite domains are solved and numerical results are compared with the other analytical and numerical solutions to show the versatility and accuracy of the presented formulation.

In this study, numerical experiments were performed to decide the proper size off finite element for the analysis of harbor resonance problems. Various sizes of finite elements were considered from 1/3 to 1/60 of wavelength to model a fully opened rectangular harbor. Through the numerical results, the proper number of finite elements per wavelength were revealed to be nine within two percents errors allowed in resonant period and amplification ratio, while twelve within one percent error. It was fecund that error rates of resonant periods decrease linearly, while those of amplification ratio decrease with oscillating form as the size of an element decreases. The error of amplification ratio increases more rapidly than that of resonant period in case of element numbers below nine.

Finite element analysis using modern constitutive equation is one of the most general tools to simulate the deformation behavior and to predict the life of the structure. Constitutive equation becomes complicated so as to predict the material behavior more accurately than the classical models. Because of the complexity of constitutive model, numerical treatment becomes so difficult that the calculation should be verified carefully. One-element tests, simple tension or simple shear, are usually used to verify the accuracy of finite element analysis using complicated constitutive model. Since this test is mainly focused on the time integration scheme, it is also necessary to verify the equilibrium iteration using material stiffness matrix and to compare FE results with solution of structures. In this investigation, viscoplastic solution of thick walled cylinder was derived considering axial constraints and was compared with the finite element analysis. All the numerical solutions showed a good coincidence with FE results. This numerical solution can be used as a verification tool for newly developed FE code with complicated constitutive model.
