  • Penetration of a fragment-like projectile into Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) was simulated using finite element (FE) and particle formulations. Extreme deformations and failure of the material during the penetration event were modeled with multiple approaches to evaluate how well each represented the actual physics of the penetration process and compared to experimental data. A Fragment Simulating Projectile(FSP) normally impacting a flat, square plate of FRC was modeled using two target thicknesses to examine the different levels of damage. The thinner plate was perforated by the FSP, while the thicker plate captured the FSP and only allowed penetration part way through the thickness. Full three dimensional simulations were performed, so the capability was present for non-symmetric FRC behavior and possible projectile rotation in all directions. These calculations assessed the ability of the finite element and particle formulations to calculate penetration response while assessing criteria necessary to perform the computations. The numerical code EPIC contains the element and particle formulations, as well as the explicit methodology and constitutive models, needed to perform these simulations.

  • Governing equations infrictional contact problems are introduced using variational inequality formulations which are regularized to overcome the diffculties of non-differentiability of the friction functional. Also finite element approximations and a priori error estimations are derived based on those formulations. Numerical simulations are performed illustrating the theoretical results.

  • This paper is concerned with the numerical analysis of frictional contact problems in axisymmetric bodies using the rigid-plastic finite element method. A contact finite element method, based on a penalty function, are derived from variational formulations. The contact boundary condition between two deformable bodies is prescribed by the proposed algorithm. The program which can handle frictional contact problem is developed by using pre-existing rigid-plastic finite element code. Some examples used in this paper illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed formulations and algorithms. Efforts focus on the deformation patterns, contact force, and velocity gradient through the various simulations.

  • The paper reports on alternative hybrid/mixed formulations being developed by the Structural Analysis Research Group of Institute Superior T$\acute{e}$cnico. These formulations open the scope and increase the power of the finite element method by allowing different fields to be independently approximated, within certain consistency criteria, and by enhancing the use of a wide range of approximation functions. They have been applied to the analysis of 2-D problems, laminar structures and solids, using different constitutive relations, both in quasi-static and dynamic regimes. The fundamental properties of the formulations are identified and assessed and their performance is illustrated using simple, linear applications.

  • This paper accounts for derivations and formulations of the finite element dynamic equation of the rotor-bearing system to analyze its whirling speed. It turns out to be a different form from previous researcher's because of different successive sequences of Euler angles. Correspondingly the adoption of other rotation tensor will be needed for a consistent derivation of the dynamic equation. The process of its finite element formulation with consistent mass matrix and gyroscopic matrix involves a general definition of the modal analysis or the Eigen analysis for the damped system in the inertial frame and rotating frame, respectively.

  • A numerical method fur performance evaluation of LIPCA is proposed using a finite element method. Fully coupled formulations for piezo-electric material are introduced and eight-node incompatible element is used. After verifying the developed code, the behaviors of LIPCA and $THUNDER^{TM}$ are investigated.

  • This paper deals with the nonlinear finite element analysis of fibre-reinforced plastic poles. Based on the principle of stationary potential energy and Novozhilov's derivations of nonlinear strains, the formulations for the geometric nonlinear analysis of general shells are derived. The formulations are applied to the fibre-reinforced plastic poles which are treated as conical shells. A semi-analytical finite element model based on the theory of shell of revolution is developed. Several aspects of the implementation of the geometric nonlinear analysis are discussed. Examples are presented to show the applicability of the nonlinear analysis to the post-buckling and large deformation of fibre-reinforced plastic poles.

  • The present paper investigates the stochastic seismic responses of steel structure systems with Partially Restrained (PR) connections by using Perturbation based Stochastic Finite Element (PSFEM) method. A stiffness matrix formulation of steel systems with PR connections and PSFEM and MCS formulations of structural systems are given. Based on the formulations, a computer program in FORTRAN language has been developed, and stochastic seismic analyses of steel frame and bridge systems have been performed for different types of connections. The connection parameters, material and geometrical properties are assumed to be random variables in the analyses. The Kocaeli earthquake occurred in 1999 is considered as a ground motion. The connection parameters, material and geometrical properties are considered to be random variables. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed SFEM algorithm are validated by comparison with results of Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method.

  • In this study, new finite clement formulations are carried out to analyze the distortion of the curved steel box girders which are susceptible to the torsional loading. For the exact analysis of curved box girders, additional degrees of freedom are added besides the conventional 6 degrees of freedom of general-purpose finite analysis programs, which are torsional warping, distortional warring, and distortion. New formulations were coded into a computer programs. Several numerical examples were presented to demonstrate the validity of developed program.

  • Reinforced concrete corbels are structural elements widely used in practical engineering. The complex response of these elements is described in design codes in a simplified manner. These formulations are not sufficient to show the real behavior, which, however, is an essential prerequisite for the manufacturing of numerous elements. Therefore, a deterministic and probabilistic study has been performed, which is described in this contribution. Real complex structures have been modeled by means of the finite element method supported primarily by experimental works. The main objective of this study was the detection of uncertainties effects and safety margins not captured by traditional codes. This aim could be fulfilled by statistical considerations applied to the investigated structures. The probabilistic study is based on advanced Monte Carlo simulation techniques and sophisticated nonlinear finite element formulations.
