Particle packing on meso-level has a significant influence on workability of fresh concrete and also on the mechanical and durability properties of the matured material. It was demonstrated earlier that shape exerts but a marginal influence on the elastic properties of concrete provided being packed to the same density, which is not necessarily the case with different types of aggregate. Hence, elastic properties of concrete can be treated as approximately structure-insensitive parameters. However, fracture behaviour can be expected structure-sensitive. This is supported by the present study based on discrete element method (DEM) simulated three-phase concrete, namely aggregate, matrix and interfacial transition zones (ITZs). Fracture properties are assessed with the aid of a finite element method (FEM) based on the damage materials model. Effects on tensile strength due to grain shape and packing density are investigated. Shape differences are shown to have only modest influence. Significant effects are exerted by packing density and physical-mechanical properties of the phases, whereby the ITZ takes up a major position.
The HANARO, multi-purpose research reactor, 30 MWth open-tank-in-pool type, is under 24 MWth of power operation since it reached to the initial critical in February, 1995. Many useful experiments should be safely performed to activate the utilization of the HANARO, but there is a radioactive risk of using the HANARO. To reduce the risk, a test facility, which is not reacted by nuclear fuel, is being developed to simulate similar flow characteristics with the HANARO. This paper describes the computational flow analysis to determine each shape of simulating fuels for simulating the flow similarities of 36 elements hexagonal fuels assembly and 18 elements circulating fuels assembly loaded in HANARO. The shares of orifices were determined by the trial and error method and the structural integrities of them were verified by the finite element method assuming that the flow rate and pressure differences of reactor core are constant. The analysis results will be verified with the results of the flow test to be performed after the installation of this test facility.
There has been a number of investigations in recent years reporting the results obtained on the structure and properties of metals deformed to severe plastic deformation (SPD). Being deformed to SPD, ultra-fine grains (UFG) are usually formed, and UFG structure exhibits fundamental differences in original physical properties. One method often used to obtain SPD is equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). In order for this technique to be exploited, it is important to understand the deformation behavior during the ECAP processing and relationship to the configuration of die. The finite element method (FEM) has been used to investigate this issue. It has been found that the plastic deformation is sensitive to the channel angle and material properties and is not uniform across the width of the specimen and the pressing load is relative to deformation during the ECAP processing.
Numerous methods have been proposed in predicting formability of sheet metals based on microstructural and macro-scale properties of sheets. However, there are limited number of papers on the optimization problem to increase formability of sheet metals. In the present study, we aim to use novel optimization algorithms in neural networks to maximize the formability of sheet metals based on tensile curve and texture of aluminum sheet metals. In this regard, experimental and numerical evaluations of effects of texture and tensile properties are conducted. The texture effects evaluation is performed using Taylor homogenization method. The data obtained from these evaluations are gathered and utilized to train and validate an artificial neural network (ANN) with different optimization methods. Several optimization method including grey wolf algorithm (GWA), chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA) and whale optimization algorithm (WOA) are engaged in the optimization problems. The results demonstrated that in aluminum alloys the most preferable texture is cube texture for the most formable sheets. On the other hand, slight differences in the tensile behavior of the aluminum sheets in other similar conditions impose no significant decreases in the forming limit diagram under stretch loading conditions.

This study investigates the possibility of damage detection of a real bridge by means of a modal parameter-based finite element (FE) model update. Field moving vehicle experiments were conducted on an actual steel plate girder bridge. In the damage experiment, cracks were applied to the bridge to simulate damage states. A fast Bayesian FFT method was employed to identify and quantify uncertainties of the modal parameters then these modal parameters were used in the Bayesian model update. Material properties and boundary conditions are taken as uncertainties and updated in the model update process. Observations showed that although some differences existed in the results obtained from different model classes, the discrepancy between modal parameters of the FE model and those experimentally obtained was reduced after the model update process, and the updated parameters in the numerical model were indeed affected by the damage. The importance of boundary conditions in the model updating process is also observed. The capability of the MCMC model update method for application to the actual bridge structure is assessed, and the limitation of FE model update in damage detection of bridges using only modal parameters is observed.

In this study, as a part of basic study for developing the simulation program for the assemssment of reliability of electronic EMC packaging which covers from EMC mixing step to thermal analysis, comparison between a measured and predicted values of material properties of EMC and finitde element analysis of thermal stress are performed. For the experimental testing specimens of fifty, sixty hive and eighty percent filler($13\mu m$, spherical silica) weight fraction are fabricated using tranfer molding. Coefficient of thermal expansion, elastic modulus and thermla conductivity are measured using these specimens and then these measured values are compared with the predicted values by various equations ( such as dilute suspension method. self consistent method, generalized self consistent method, Hashin-Shtrikman's bounds. Shapery's bounds, Nielsen's method and others). Measured values are distributed within the upper and lower bounds of equations. Measured elastic modulus and coefficient of thermal expansion approaches closely the perdicted values with self consisten mehtod and upper bound of Shaperys equation respectively. However small differences of thermal conductivity between the different filler volume fraction are obserbed. FEM analysis indicates that firstly stress is concentrated at the corner section of EMC and secondly EMC with eighty percent filler weight fraction shows less thermal stress when package is cooling down and relatively high thermal stress when package is heating up.
We propose a waveform inversion method for SH-wave data obtained in a shallow seismic refraction survey, to determine a 2D inhomogeneous S-wave profile of shallow soils. In this method, a 2.5D equation is used to simulate SH-wave propagation in 2D media. The equation is solved with the staggered grid finite-difference approximation to the 4th-order in space and 2nd-order in time, to compute a synthetic wave. The misfit, defined using differences between calculated and observed waveforms, is minimised with a hybrid heuristic search method. We parameterise a 2D subsurface structural model with blocks with different depth boundaries, and S-wave velocities in each block. Numerical experiments were conducted using synthetic SH-wave data with white noise for a model having a blind layer and irregular interfaces. We could reconstruct a structure including a blind layer with reasonable computation time from surface seismic refraction data.
To study oceanic and meteorological problems related to climate change, Korea has been operating several ocean research stations (ORSs). In 2011, the Gageocho ORS was attacked by Typhoon Muifa, and its structural members and several observation devices were severely damaged. After this event, the Gageocho ORS was rehabilitated with 5 m height to account for 100-yr extreme wave height, and the vibration measurement system was equipped to monitor the structural vibrational characteristics including natural frequencies and modal damping ratios. In this study, a mass reallocation method is presented for structural model updating of the Gageocho ORS based on the experimentally identified natural frequencies. A preliminary finite element (FE) model was constructed based on design drawings, and several of the candidate baseline FE models were manually built, taking into account the different structural conditions such as corroded thickness. Among these candidate baseline FE models, the most reasonable baseline FE model was selected by comparing the differences between the identified and calculated natural frequencies; the most suitable baseline FE model was updated based on the identified modal properties, and by using the pattern search method, which is one of direct search optimization methods. The mass reallocation method is newly proposed as a means to determine the equivalent mass quantities along the height and in a floor. It was found that the natural frequencies calculated based on the updated FE model was very close to the identified natural frequencies. In conclusion, it is expected that these results, which were obtained by updating a baseline FE model, can be useful for establishing the reference database for jacket-type offshore structures, and assessing the structural integrity of the Gageocho ORS.

Purpose : To analyze the effect of implant designs on insertion torque and stress by performing a comparative study on von Mises stress, torque and normal force through a three-dimensional finite element analysis. Materials and methods : Models of the screw type implant were used to model the implant as a form placed in the mandibular premolar region applying a three-dimensional finite element method. Screw type implant designs were classified into 4 types of parallel ones and 7 types of tapered ones. Other factors were simulated to represent clinical environment. Results : In parallel implant designs, higher and wider threads resulted in higher insertion torques and higher stress distributions. In tapered implant designs, changes in the taper led to remarkable differences in the insertion torques. It was difficult to determine a certain tendency of stress distribution around the implants since the stress level was too high around them. In tapered implant designs, smaller implants demonstrated lower insertion torques than the original type and were relatively less dependent on the degree of taper. Tapered implants showed higher insertion torques and higher stress distributions than parallel implants. Conclusion : According to this study, although the tapered implant demonstrated a higher insertion torque than the parallel implant, stress tended to be concentrated in the entire fixture of the tapered implant due to the inefficient stress distribution.

Digital map is utilized for an effective display of the distributions of the hydrogeological variables such as water table height(hydraulic head) and log-transmissivity(lnT) in north Pohang, KyungBug. Specifically the geostatistical method kriging is used to construct the distributions in an unconfined aquifer from a finite set of measured data. The experimental variograms for both the head and lnT suggest spherical models with nugget of 0 and range of 6km. The kriged results by using these variograms show that the head decreases primarily from the west to the east with a large peak in the north-western part and lnT is at the maximum level in the central part with outwardly decreasing trend. The constructed delineation is also used to calculate the flow field in the region. Finite differences with second order consistency are used to calculate the fluxes in the east(x) and north(y) across a vertical cross-section of unit width and height equal to the thickness of the wet zone in the aquifer. It is demonstrated that the flow is dominantly in the east with diverging trend on the eastern hillside of the water table peak. A few convergent spots also appear.
