To detect and evaluate the damage present in bridge, static identification method is known to be simple and effective, compared to dynamic method. In this study, the damage detection method in steel box girder bridge using static responses including displacement, slope and curvature is examined. The static displacement is calculated using finite element analysis and the slope and curvature are determined from the displacement using central difference method. The location of damage is detected using the absolute differences of these responses in intact and damaged bridge. Steel box girder bridge with corner crack is modeled using singular element in finite element method. The results show that these responses were significantly useful in detecting and predicting the location of damage present in bridge.

The thermal stress intensity factors for interface cracks of Griffith and symmetric lip cusp types under vertical uniform heat flow in a finite body are calculated by boundary element method. The boundary conditions on the crack surfaces are insulated or fixed to constant temperature. The relationship between the stress intensity factors and the displacements on the nodal point of a crack tip element is derived. The numerical values of the thermal stress intensity factors for interface Griffith crack in an infinite body and for symmetric lip cusp crack in a finite and homogeneous body are compared with the previous solutions. The thermal stress intensity factors for symmetric lip cusp interface crack in a finite body are calculated with respect to various effective crack lengths, configuration parameters, material property ratios and the thermal boundary conditions on the crack surfaces. Under the same outer boundary conditions, there are no appreciable differences in the distribution of thermal stress intensity factors with respect to each material properties. But the effect of crack surface thermal boundary conditions on the thermal stress intensity factors is considerable.
Static and dynamic structural analyses of a turbine bladed-disk for a liquid rocket turbopump are performed to investigate the safety level of strength and vibration at design point. During operation, turbopump is exposed to various external loads. Therefore, the effects of them should be carefully considered and properly modeled. First, due to the high rotational speed of the turbopump, effects of centrifugal forces are considered in the structural analysis. Thermal load caused by severe temperature differences is also considered. A three dimensional finite element method (FEM) is used for linear and nonlinear structural analyses with modified Newton-Raphson iteration method. After the nonlinear solution is obtained from the structural analysis, dynamic characteristics are obtained as a function of rotational speed from the linearized eigenvalue analysis at an equilibrium position. From the analysis results, characteristics of stress distribution and vibration were thoroughly examined and investigated.
Predictions of the pedestrian level wind speeds for the downtown area of Auckland that have been obtained by wind tunnel and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling are presented. The wind tunnel method involves the observation of erosion patterns as the wind speed is progressively increased. The computational solutions are mean flow calculations, which were obtained by using the finite volume code PHOENICS and the $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The results for a variety of wind directions are compared, and it is observed that while the patterns are similar there are noticeable differences. A possible explanation for these differences arises because the tunnel prediction technique is sensitivity to gust wind speeds while the CFD method predicts mean wind speeds. It is shown that in many cases the computational model indicates high mean wind speeds near the corner of a building while the erosion patterns are consistent with eddies being shed from the edge of the building and swept downstream.
Optimized high-order compact(OHOC) schemes were proposed, which have high spatial order of truncation and resolution to simulate the aeroacoustic problems due to unsteady compressible flows. Generally, numerical schemes are categorized explicit or implicit by time-marching method. In this research, OHOC differences which were developed with explicit time-marching method is used to have implicit formulation and the implicit OHOC differences result in block hepta-diagonal matrix. This paper presents the comparisons between the explicit and implicit OHOC schemes with a second order accuracy of time in the 1-d linear wave convection problem, and between the explicit OHOC scheme of 4th-order accuracy in time and the implicit OHOC scheme of 1st-order accuracy in tine for the 1-d nonlinear wave convection problem. With these comparisons, the characteristics of implicit OHOC scheme are shown in the point of CFL number.

We propose a finite element modeling method considering the ball bearing contact mechanism, and the developed method was verified through experimental and analytical results of inner and outer race-type rotor systems. A comparison of the proposed method with conventional method reveals that there is little difference in the results of the inner race-type rotor system, but there are considerable differences in the results of the outer race-type rotor system such that predictions of greater accuracy can be made. Therefore, the proposed method can be used for accurately predicting the dynamic characteristics of an outer race-type rotary machine.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of rigidity of post core systems on stress distribution by the finite element stress analysis method. Three-dimensional finite element models simulating an endodontically treated maxillary central incisor restored with a zirconia crown were prepared. Each model contained cortical bone, trabecular bone, periodontal ligament, 4mm apical root canal filling, and post-and-core. A 50N static occlusal load was applied to the palatal surface of the crown with a $60^{\circ}$ angle to the long axis of the tooth. And three parallel type post (zirconia, glass fiber and stainless steel) and two core (Paracore and Tetric ceram) materials were evaluated, respectively. The differences in stress transfer characteristics of the models were analyzed. von Mises stresses were chosen for presentation of results and maximum displacement and hydrostatic pressure were also calculated. For the Result of the research, the model applied glass fiber to post material has lowest von Mises stress and it is suitable for material of post core systems.

A floating rig, which has been used to develop the ocean resources has a common characteristics with the catamaran ship that it is composed of the two simple hulls. So the motion responses of the floating rig can be predicted theoretically with the aid of the strip method as those of the catamaran. And for the strip method, the two-dimensional hydrodynamic coefficients are the most important inputs to predict the results accurately. In this report, a theoretical method is proposed for calculating two-dimensional hydrodynamic forces and moments acting upon arbitrary shaped twin-hull cylinders, which are forced to make a heaving, swaying and rolling oscillation about their mean position on the free surface of a finite depth water. The theoretical results by making use of the singularity distribution method are presented. The accuracy of the coefficients was confirmed to be reasonable by the comparison with the Ohkusu's results for two circular cylinders in an infinite depth water. The depth effects on two-dimensional hydrodynamic coefficients for two circular cylinders are also checked. In some range of wave numbers, large differences in the behavior of hydrodynamic coefficients between for a finite depth and for an infinite depth are shown.

Objective: The purpose of this finite element method (FEM) study was to analyze the biomechanical differences and tooth displacement patterns according to the traction direction, methods, and sites for total distalization of the mandibular dentition using clear aligner treatment (CAT). Methods: A finite element analysis was performed on four FEM models using different traction methods (via a precision cut hook or button) and traction sites (mandibular canine or first premolar). A distalization force of 1.5 N was applied to the traction site by changing the direction from -30 to +30° to the occlusal plane. The initial tooth displacement and von Mises stress on the clear aligners were analyzed. Results: All CAT-based total distalization groups showed an overall trend of clockwise or counterclockwise rotation of the occlusal plane as the force direction varied. Mesiodistal tipping of individual teeth was more prominent than that of bodily movements. The initial displacement pattern of the mandibular teeth was more predominant based on the traction site than on the traction method. The elastic deformation of clear aligners is attributed to unintentional lingual tipping or extrusion of the mandibular anterior teeth. Conclusions: The initial tooth displacement can vary according to different distalization strategies for CAT-based total distalization. Discreet application and biomechanical understanding of traction sites and directions are necessary for appropriate mandibular total distalization.

Two types of bolted lap joints, one with a viscoelastic layer and the other without the viscoelastic layer were chosen to analyze the dynamic characteristics of the joints with the mechanical properties of the bolts in the joints are considered as computational variables. The finite element method was used along with the modal testing to verify the PEM model. The results in the bolted lap joints reveal that the higher the Young's modulus for the bolts we use the higher the natural frequencies we obtain fur the joints. However, the natural frequency differences in the first and second mode are not substantial but become noticeable in the higher modes. Lower natural frequencies were obtained for the bolted lap joints with the viscoelastic layer when compared with those of the bolted lap joints without the viscoelastic layer. And the differences in the natural frequencies for the two types of joints are relatively small in the first and second mode whereas in the higher mode the differences become significant. The loss factors were observed to be significant especially in the second mode for the bolted lap joints with the viscoelastic layer.
