Investigation of the stability of arch dam abutments is one of the most important aspects in the analysis of this type of dams. To this end, the Bakhtiari dam, a doubly curved arch dam having six wedges at each of its abutments, is selected. The seismic safety of dam abutments is studied through time history analysis using the design-based earthquake (DBE) and maximum credible earthquake (MCE) hazard levels. Londe limit equilibrium method is used to calculate the stability of wedges in abutments. The thrust forces are obtained using ABAQUS, and stability of wedges is calculated using the code written within MATLAB. Effects of foundation flexibility, grout curtain performance, vertical component of earthquake, nonlinear behavior of materials, and geometrical nonlinearity on the safety factor of the abutments are scrutinized. The results show that the grout curtain performance is the main affecting factor on the stability of the abutments, while nonlinear behavior of the materials is the least affecting factor amongst others. Also, it is resulted that increasing number of the contraction joints can improve the seismic stability of dam. A cap is observed on the number of joints, above which the safety factor does not change incredibly.
The moment-of-fluid (MOF) method is a new volume-tracking method that accurately treats evolving material interfaces. Based on the moment data (volume and centroid) for each material, the material interfaces are reconstructed with second-order spatial accuracy in a strictly conservative manner. The MOF method is coupled with a stabilized finite element incompressible Navier-Stokes solver for two fluids, namely water and air. The effectiveness of the MOF method is demonstrated with a free-surface dam-break problem.
aThe elastic properties of the fault zone (width; 3~12m), the shattered zone (width; over 40m) and the fresh rock zone distributed under the core foundation of fill dam in granitic gneiss have widely different range. The deformation moduli of the fresh rock zone, the fault zone and the shattered zone obtained from in situ rock tests - Plate Load Test and Bore Hole Deformation Test - show a range of $42,000~168,000kg/\textrm{cm}^2,{\;}963~2,204kg/\textrm{cm}^2{\;}and{\;}1,238~2,098kg/\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. The differential settlements hetween the fault zone and the fresh rock zone are expected after the dam construction. Therefore, the displacement of foundation and concrete fill are evaluated using FEADAM 84 program of finite element analysis. The geometric distribution of discontinuifies obtained from the site mapping and drilling is considered in the finite element analysis. The analysis shows that the differential settlements between the fault zone and the fresh rock zone is about 6cm, while that of concrete fill is within 0.5cm.
In this paper, a predictive method accounting for the scaling effects of rockfill materials in the numerical deformation analysis of rockfill dams is developed. It aims to take into consideration the differences of engineering properties of rockfill materials between in situ and laboratory conditions in the deformation analysis. The developed method is based on the modification of model parameters used in the chosen material model, which is, in this study, an elasto-plastic model with double yield surfaces, i.e., the modified Hardening Soil model. Datasets of experimental tests are collected from previous studies, and a new dataset of the Nam Ngum 2 dam project for investigating the scaling effects of rockfill materials, including particle size, particle gradation and density, is obtained. To quantitatively consider the influence of particle gradation, the coarse-to-fine content (C/F) concept is proposed in this study. The simple relations between the model parameters and particle size, C/F and density are formulated, which enable us to predict the mechanical properties of prototype materials from laboratory tests. Subsequently, a 3D finite element analysis of the Nam Ngum 2 concrete face slab rockfill dam at the end of the construction stage is carried out using two sets of model parameters (1) based on the laboratory tests and (2) in accordance with the proposed method. Comparisons of the computed results with dam monitoring data indicate that the proposed method can provide a simple but effective framework to take account of the scaling effect in dam deformation analysis.
This paper evaluates the effect of anisotropic conductivity on the seepage face and reliability index of an homogeneous dam with and without toe drain. The analysis are conducted under steady state saturated-unsaturated seepage condition using finite element method. Various anisotropic conductivity ratios were interpreted under such conditions as the vertical conductivity is reduced while the horizon conductivity is fixed. The shear strength of soil is defined by the modified Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The analysis results demonstrate that the length of seepage face and reliability index at the downstream and upstream of the dam increase with an increasing anisotropic ratio. These results of the seepage face and reliability index, however, depend on the total head difference between the upstream slope and downstream toe. The difference in seepage face and reliability index is attributed to the different equipotential head with different anisotropic ratios of the dam material.
The Wavenumber or more accurately Wavenumber-FD approach was initially introduced for two-dimensional dynamic analysis of concrete gravity dam-reservoir systems. The technique was formulated in the context of pure finite element programming in frequency domain. Later on, a variation of the method was proposed which was referred to as Wavenumber-TD approach suitable for time domain type of analysis. Recently, it is also shown that Wavenumber-FD approach may be applied for three-dimensional dynamic analysis of concrete arch dam-reservoir systems. In the present study, application of its variation (i.e., Wavenumber-TD approach) is investigated for three-dimensional problems. The method is initially described. Subsequently, the response of idealized Morrow Point arch dam-reservoir system is obtained by this method and its special cases (i.e., two other well-known absorbing conditions) for time harmonic excitation in stream direction. All results for various considered cases are compared against the exact response for models with different values of normalized reservoir length and reservoir base/sidewalls absorptive conditions.
The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of transient stochastic analysis on nonlinear response of earth and rock-fill dams to spatially varying ground motion. The dam models are analyzed by a stochastic finite element method based on the equivalent linear method which considers the nonlinear variation of soil shear moduli and damping ratio as a function of shear strain. The spatial variability of ground motion is taken into account with the incoherence, wave-passage and site response effects. Stationary as well as transient stochastic response analyses are performed for the considered dam types. A time dependent frequency response function is used throughout the study for transient stochastic responses. It is observed that stationarity is a reasonable assumption for earth and rock-fill dams to typical durations of strong shaking.

A new displacement-based transmitting boundary is developed for the transient analysis of dynamics interactions between flexible dam body and reservoir impounding compressible water The mechanical model is derived analytically in time domain from the kernel function, Bessel function, appearing in the convolution integral and corresponding mechanical model is developed that consists of mass, damping and stiffness matrices. The resulting system of, equations uses displacement degrees of freedom. Hence it can be coupled directly with the displacement-based solid finite element model of dam body, linear of nonlinear. The method was applied to the rigid and flexible dam models. The results showed very good agreement : with the semi-analytic frequency domain solutions.

One of the major difficulties in the seismic analysis of a dam-reservoir system is the treatment of the energy radiation in the upstream direction of the reservoir. In the paper, a new transmitting boundary is presented that can model properly the radiation of energy in the far field direction of a semi-infinite reservoir with constant depth. In the newly developed method, effects of surface wave motion are taken into accounted and the reservoir-foundation interaction is approximately accounted for with an absorbing boundary condition. If a dam has vertical upstream face and the infinitely long reservoir maintains constant depth, then the proposed transmitting boundary can be directly coupled with the model of dam body. In present study, the dam body is assumed to behave elastically and modeled by finite element method. Seismic responses of a dam model are investigated using the newly developed transmitting boundary.

Since the seismic response of dams can be strongly influenced by the dam-reservior interaction in needs to be taken into account in the seismic design of dams. In general a substructure method is employed to solve the dam-reservoir interaction problem in which the dam body is modeled with finite elements and the infinite region of a reservoir using a transmitting boundary. When the water is modeled as a compressible fluid the equation is formulated in frequency domain. But nonlinear behavior of dam body cannot be studied easily in the frequency domain method. In this study time domain formulation of the dam-reservoir-soil interaction is proposed based onthe lumped parameter modeling of the reservoir region, The frequency dependent dynamic-stiffness coefficients of the reservoir are converted into frequency independent lumped-parameters such as masses dampers and springs. The soil-structure interactionis modeled using lumped parameters in similar way. the ground is assumed as a visco-elastic stratum on the rigid bedrock. The dynamic stiffnesses of the rigid surface foundation are calculated using the hyperelement method and are converted into lumped parameters. The application example demonstrated that the lumped parameter model gives almost identical results with the frequency domain formulation.
