We investigated the quality of 48 cultivar in 5 types, most popularly used in Korea golf courses. Only brown patch disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG1-1 was occurred naturally. While disease was developed seriously into tall fescue cultivar in spring time and into bentgrass cultivar in fall time, respectively, however, among species were not significantly different. Tall fescue and perennial ryegrass cultivar had higher chlorophyll contents in November and there were also significantly different between cultivar of tall fescue, kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue species. Turfgrass color also showed significant difference between grass species. Perennial ryegrass has the highest value of turf leaf color, followed by kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue species. Significant differences among cultivar were found in kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue and fine fescue. Although fresh weight of turfgrass was not statistically different between grass species, root length was significantly different between species. Tall fescue species had the longest root length. Fresh weight showed differences among cultivar in kentucky bluegrass, bentgrass and tall fescue species. Based on our results, growth and grass quality showed large differences among cultivar and each turfgrass species.
Experiments were carried out to select marker for rusty tolerance ginseng root using high rusty degree lines(HRL) and low rusty degree lines (LRL) in ginseng plant. A strong positive correlation was detected between degree of rusty-root in 4-year-root and that in 6-year-root. The contents of phenolic compounds among samples were not different in stele and branch & fine roots. The contents of phenolic compounds of rusty-roots was higher than that of healthy-roots in cortex, but those of high 겨sty degree lines (HRL) were not different compared with low rusty degree lines (LRL) in cortex using same rusty-degree samples. These suggest that phenolic compounds in cortex tissue were not adequate as a marker to select rusty tolerance ginseng roots. The contents of phenolic compounds of rusty-roots were higher than that of healthy-roots in epidermis, and those of HRL were higher than LRL in epidermis using same rusty-degree samples. These suggested that the contents of phenolic compounds in epidermis tissue might be a potent marker to select rusty tolerance ginseng roots.
The glass thermal forming process provides a high volume, low cost approach to producing aspherical reflectors for x-ray optics. Thin glass sheets are shaped into mirror segments by replicating the mold shape at high temperature. Heating parameters in the glass thermal slumping process are crucial to improve surface quality of the formed glass. In this research, the heating process of a thermal slumping glass sheet on a concave parabolic mold was simulated with the finite-element method (FEM) to investigate the effects of heating rate and soaking temperature. Based on the optimized heating conditions, glass samples 0.5 mm thick were formed in a furnace with a steel concave parabolic mold. The figure errors of the formed glass were measured and discussed in detail. It was found that the formed glass was not fully slumped at the edges, and should be trimmed to achieve better surface deviation. The root-mean-square (RMS) deviation and peak-valley (PV) deviation between formed glass and mold along the axial direction were 2.3 μm and 4.7 μm respectively.
This study categorizes the distributed sand around coastal area of Jeju volcanic Island into three groups according to their components, and arranges their characteristics. In the case of basic physical properties, the silicate sand has slightly greater specific gravity than general sand, and the carbonate sand with widespread distribution has a lower specific gravity. In the gross, the carbonate sand has poor particle classifying and low uniformity coefficient because carbonate minerals of relatively large grain size are mixed. The relation between compressive strength and components shows conflicting tendency that silicate and carbonate components have positive correlation and negative correlation with compressive strength, respectively. Based on the components ratio of one to one, the sand having low carbonate component ratio is expected to be able to utilize in construction fine aggregate. To compare between square root (ACI 308) and cube root (KCI 2012) of compressive strength at computation of elastic modulus, it is considered to non-dimensional elastic modulus.
The growth pattern of bud-shoot-needle of isolated 15-year-old trees, and seansonal changes in litter-falls and fine root dry weights in the unthinned 28-year-old plantation were investigated to understand the growth phenology of Pinus koraiensis. Shoot growth was continued by 7th June when buds appeared, while current needle growth was by 19th July when the bud growth started. Most of the litter-falls occurred in October but many of them were fallen in July and August due to storms, Fine roots were produced mostly in autumn(1,004 kg/ha), and were dead during winter (583 kg/ha) and spring(1,331 kg/ha).
Experiments were carried out to select the rusty tolerance lines in 39 inbred lines of ginseng cultivated in field, among them, 7 lines showed low degree of rusty root while 7 lines showed high degree of rusty root. In order to select marker elements among mineral nutrients for rusty ginseng root, we combined 5 groups as follows : Ⅰ (healthy-root of low rusty degree lines vs. rusty-root of high rusty degree lines), II (healthy-root vs. rusty-root in low rusty degree lines), Ⅲ (healthy-root vs. rusty-root in high rusty degree lines), Ⅳ (low rusty degree lines vs. high rusty degree lines in rusty-root), Ⅴ (low rusty degree lines vs. high rusty degree lines in healthy-root), and analyzed mineral nutrition at different root parts. The contents of mineral nutritions in stele and cortex were not different between healthy lines and rusty lines, and between healthy roots and rusty roots, but that in branch and fine roots were not a tendency. The contents of Fe, Na and Al in epidermis were higher in rusty-root than healthy-root. Also, the contents of Fe and Al in epidermis of high rusty degree lines (HRL) were higher than those of low rusty degree lines (LRL) in healthy-roots and rusty-roots, and so we suggest Fe and Al as markers to select low rusty degree ginseng lines.

This study was carried out to verify results of the nursery seedbeds. From November of 1997 to September of 1998, the artificial banking slopes in the greenhouse of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Seoul National University were seeded with the mixtures of those species. Most of exotic species showed relatively poor development of root as short as 30cm. Also the green weight of root biomass of the native species was more than two times than that of the exotic species. On the other hand, it was found that the exotic species have relatively well-developed fine roots. Thus, it was concluded that the seed-mixture of the native species with long and thick roots and the exotic species with fine roots be the most effective method for topsoil erosion control on banking-slopes. The artificial rainfall system treatment(30mm/hr, 60mm/hr, 100mm/hr) on $30^{\circ}$ banking-slopes did not cause any significant change in the amount of soil loss by erosion. The root system was best developed in the plot of 1,000 seedlings per square meter and it performed well for soil erosion control. Consequently, in the case of seeding of single herbaceous species without mixing any woody seeds, the expected seedlings were 1,000 to 2,000 per square meter.

This study was conducted to identify characteristics of domestic pine forest soils and to elucidate major soil influencing factors for natural regeneration. We analyzed the physico-chemical characteristics of the soil samples collected from 23 pine forests and confirmed the similar results with the forest soil characteristics. Soil pH, organic matter content, total nitrogen, exchangeable Ca, silt content, and exchangeable Al were selected as the major soil factors among the exposed soils through 10 days of pine seedlings exposure and cultivation experiments and statistical analysis. Multiple regression analysis showed that soil pH had a positive effect on specific root length (SRL) of red pine seedlings and exchangeable Al was a significant factor affecting negative change in SRL. Taken together, the reduction of exchangeable Al by soil pH adjustment would be helpful for natural regeneration by restoring the forest and improving the fine root and root integrity of pine seedlings. Therefore, soil pH and exchangeable Al could be recommended as a major soil factor to be carefully considered in the monitoring and management of soil in pine forests that need to be renewed in the future.

This study was conducted to investigate the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal biodiversity, spore density and root colonization in relation to site ages at expressway cut-slopes in Korea. Stabilization of exposed surface involved soil amendments and spraying seed mixture of turf grasses and/or nitrogen-fixing shrub species. Eighteen sites were selected with varying ages (2 to 16 years). Soil samples collected in October from each site were analyzed for fungal diversity and spore counts. Fine root samples from the plants were assayed for fungal colonization. Of the total 37 plants inspected in the sites, 26 species had endomycorrhizal colonization with an average root colonization rate of 18%, and with a range from 1 to 67%. The average endomycorrhizal colonization rate of initially introduced Festuca arundinacea which became the most dominant grass in later stage showed 22.8%, while that of Lespedeza bicolor which became the most dominant woody species were 21.6%. Naturally-invading Robinia pseudoacacia showed higher colonization rate in the old sites. Although site age did not show significant effects on fungal diversity, the root colonization rates of initially introduced plants decreased with the site aging, while those of invading plants increased with aging of the sites. The soil chemical properties, pH, N, and P contents, were negatively correlated with spore density, root colonization and endomycorrhizal species diversity. A total of forty arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal species in seven genera were identified. Of the 40 species, Acaulospora lacunosa, Glomus aggregatum, Glomus constrictum, Scutellospora erythropa, and Acaulospora spinosa were the five most dominant species in the decreasing order.
This study was conducted to investigate changes in ginsenoside by continuously treating fine bubble, which are mainly used for environmental purification, in 2-year-old ginseng. The ginsenoside content and composition of ginseng leaves and roots were analyzed for 4 months (120 days) after application of Fine bubble. As a result of treatment with common water in leaves, only Re of protopanaxatriol was significantly higher and As a result of treatment with fine buble, it was confirmed that protopanaxadiol Rb1, RC, Rb2 and Rd components were also increased. Especially, the increase of Re and Rb1 resulted in an increase of total ginsenoside. The ratio of PD / PT to ginseng was 0.811 in finebubble treated leaves and 1.28 in root. The fine bubble treatment induced the synthesis of ginsenoside from the roots and resulted in a PD / PT ratio of close to 1. Therefore, this study suggests a method of cultivating high quality ginseng using fine bubble water and suggests possibility of using it as a functional food material which can be used with leaves as well as roots.
