  • To detect the surface and the opposite side cracks on iron specimen under AC and DC magnetic fields, the planar inductive coil sensors were employed. When the induced signals were measured, the planar inductive coil sensor and the magnetic field source were lifted off about 2 mm from the top surface of the specimen. AC magnetic fields and DC magnetic fields were applied to the specimens by single straight Cu coil and NdFeB permanent magnet, respectively. The detected signals at crack positions were good coincidence with those of the simulation results.

  • In large scale superconducting rotating machine, HTS field coils are constructed with many stacks of single or double pancake coils connected in series. In spite of its higher thermal stability, HTS field coil experiences some quench, which results in some part of burn-out in the field coils. Thus in the view point of the HTS rotating machine field coil design and testing, it was very important to predict the possibility of quench occurrence in the designed field coils. In this paper, a HTS racetrack coil constructed with two single pancake coils and one double pancake coil was tested in LN2 and cooling by GM refrigerator. It is wound using the Bi-2223 tape. The experimental details and results are presented in this paper.

  • Gradient coil offers the spatial informations of sample or patient in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging(NMRI) and its gradient field linearity over the field of view(FOV) has many influence on the MR imaging. Accurate and good quality MR imaging can be acquired by the high gradient field linearity over the FOV. So it is an important part to design of gradient coil with good linearity in the wide imaging range. Usually, Z-directional gradient field is generated by using the Helmholtz type coil which is consisted of one-pair loop with anti-current path. It gets less about 40% linearity of the diameter spherical volume(DSV). In this study, we calculated optimized geometrical parameters of two-pair loop system to cancel odd terms up to $B_7$ included effectively. we also analyzed and compared the gradient field distribution and linearity of the common Helmholtz coil with them of the two-pair loop system.

  • We constructed the large 3-axis square Helmholtz coil system for the power frequency magnetic field immunity test. We measured the coil factors and magnetic field homogeneities of the fabricated 3-axis square Helmholtz coil. The experimental results for the field homogeneities are in agreement with the theoretical data. From these results, we determined the effective areas for the immunity test. We also confirmed that the low current using the multi-turns coil can be applicable to the immunity test for the high field in short duration.

  • The generator for gas turbine power generation consists of the rotor which generates magnetic field, the winding coil which is the path for the field current and the wedge and retaining ring which prevents the radial movement of the coil. Relatively severe deformation was observed at the coil end section during the inspection of the generator for peaking-load operation, and the thermal-electricity and the centrifugal force were evaluated by the simple modeling of the windings to find the cause. But the simulation stress was not sufficient to induce the coil plastic deformation. The analysis result seems to be applicable to the base-load generators which runs continuously without shut down up to a year, but there had been more deformation than simulated for the generator which is started up and shut down frequently. The cause of the coil deformation was the restriction of the expansion and shrinkage. The restriction occurs when the winding coil shrinks, and the stress overwhelms the yield stress and cause the plastic deformation. The deformation is accumulated during the start-ups and shut-downs and the thermal growth occurs. The factors which induce the coil restriction during the expansion and shrinkage should be reduced to prevent the unallowable deformation. The resolutions are cutting off the field current earlier during the generator shut-down, modifying the coil end section to remove the stress concentration and making the insulation plate inserted between the coil end section and the retaining ring have the constant thickness.

  • A moving coil linear oscillatory actuator is consisted of the NdFeB permanent magnets with high specific energy as the stator, a coil-wrapped nonmagnetic hollow rectangular structure and an iron core as a pathway for magnetic flux. The variation of mover position and the consequent changes of coil flux path affect the coil inductance, because coil flux leaks at the open region of LOA stator. The interaction between permanent magnet and armature field is to shift the airgap flux density variation due to the magnet alone by a certain amount. The unbalanced reciprocation force due to armature reaction field decreases the advantage of moving coil LOA, such as a high degree of linearity and controllability in the force ad motion control. This paper firstly describes the coil inductance, the deviation of flux density, and the unbalanced reciprocation force, which are derived form the permeance model of LOA. Secondly, the analytical method are verified using the 2D finite element method and tests. Finally, the dynamic simulation algorithm taking the armature reaction effect and variable inductance into account, is proposed and confirmed through the experiment.

  • In this paper, we calculated the axial magnetic field at mid-gap plane between upper and lower electrode in vacuum interrupter by means of commercial finite element method Maxwell 3D and compared on the basis of "effective area" criterion. The models used in this paper are coil type(axial magnetic field) vacuum interrupter electrodes which have different numbers of coil segment. We used Dr. Schulmann's experimental equation which indicates minimum critical value of axial magnetic field to diffuse arc.

  • The RF shimming technique has been used to improve the transmit RF field homogeneity in highfield MRI. In the RF shimming technique, the amplitude and phase of the driving currents in each coil element are optimized to get homogenous flip angle or uniform image intensity. The inductive and capacitive coupling between the coil elements may degrade the RF field homogeneity if not taken into account in the optimization procedure. In this paper, we have analyzed the coupling effects on the RF shimming using a sixteen-element TEM RF coil model operating at 300 MHz. We have found that the coupling effects on the RF shimming can be reduced by putting high dielectric material between the active rung and the shield.

  • The superconducting synchronous motor or generator mostly has high permeability iron only around outer yoke portion. Therefore, if excitation voltage (Back E.M.F) is calculated from 2 dimensional magnetic field distributions, it can be largely different from actual value due to additional voltage originated from end coils. In order to calculate the excitation voltage more accurately, 3 dimensional magnetic field calculation is necessary for including the end coil effect from large air-gap structure. The excitation voltage can be calculated by stator (armature) coil linkage flux originated from rotor (field) coil excitation, but it is difficult to calculate the flux linkage exactly because of complicated structure of the stator coil. This paper shows a method to calculate the excitation voltage from 3 dimensional magnetic energy that can be calculated directly from volume integration of magnetic flux density and field intensity scalar product through FEM (Finite Element Method) analysis software.

  • In general, when a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) field coil breaks down, the overall field coils of a superconducting synchronous generator (SCSG) are also stopped working, because of the HTS field coils are connected in series. Therefore, the HTS field coils have to be modularized. The modularized HTS field coil is operated individually. Therefore, even if the HTS field coils are broken-down, the generator still operates under the fault conditions. But the output power and torque of the generator will be affected. This paper deals with the fault characteristics analysis of a 12 MW class SCSG with the modularized HTS field coils when the coils were broken-down. The steady-state and transient state characteristics of the modularized 12 MW class SCSG were analyzed and compared. The fault characteristics analysis results of the 12 MW class superconducting generator for the wind turbines were discussed in detail.
