The adhesive strength can be improved through surface treatment. The most common method is to improve physical bonding by varying the surface conditions. This study presents the effect of laser surface treatment on the adhesive strength of CFRP. The surface roughness was patterned using a 1064 nm laser. The effects of the number of laser shots and the direction and length of the pattern on the adhesion of the CFRP/CFRP single joint were investigated through tensile tests. Tests according to ASTM D5868 were performed, and the bonding mechanism was determined by analyzing the damaged surface after a fracture. The optimized number of the laser shots and the optimized depth of the roughness should be required to increase the bonding strength on the CFRP surface. When considering the shear stress in the tensile direction, the roughness pattern in the direction of 45° that increases the length of the fracture path in the adhesive layer resulted in an increase of the adhesive strength. The surface treatment of the bonding surface using a laser is a suitable method to acquire a mechanical bonding mechanism and improve the bonding strength of the CFRP bonding joint. The study on the optimized laser process parameters is required for utilizing the benefits of laser surface processing.
Merino wool top and fabric have been treated with steams such as superheated steam or high pressure steam. Moisture regain, water absorbency, water penetration, zeta potential, ESCA, SEM, and dyeing behavior were studied. Negative electric potential on the surface of wool fibers by steam treatment became higher than untreated. From the results of ESCA measurement, intensity of $O_{1s}$ was increased by steam treatment. Rate of dyeing and saturation dye exhaustion of wools increased by steam treatment, especially high pressure steam treatment. Moisture regain, water absorbency, water penetration, and surface appearances by SEM photographs of the steam-treated wools didn't change. There is no relationship between dyeing of the steam-treated wool and wettability to water. Therefore It seems likely that relaxation of adhesive filler in interscale of wool by steam treatment accelerate dye penetration into the fiber.

Lyocell is a regenerated cellulose fiber manufactured by an environmentally-friendly process. Since the fiber has more crystalline region compared to rayon, lyocell shows higher wet-strength than rayon. Although fibril generation of lyocell is lower than that of rayon because of the reason, the fibril generated during the wet process deteriorates the smooth look and soft touch of the fabric. The efficient way to remove the fibril yet retain the strength property was investigated in this work. In order to scour and remove the fibril from the fabric, cellulase enzymes were introduced and the traditional scouring was carried to be compared. Weight loss, dye-ability, and strength of treated fabric were measured after the treatments. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the surface of the fiber. Among the cellulases used in this work, Denimax 992L showed the best results for removal of fibril with low weight loss and tensile strength loss. The optimal conditions for the enzymatic treatment could be chosen depending on a characteristic for final purpose of the lyocell product.
In this study, the oxyfluorination of PAN-based carbon fibers was undertaken at room temperature using fluorine-oxygen mixtures, and the influence of oxyfluorination on properties was investigated. The surface characteristics of the modified fiber were determined by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and dynamic contact angle analyzer. The oxyfluorination of carbon fibers was one of the more effective methods to increase surface wettability by the formation of semicovalent C-F bond and C-O bond depending on reaction conditions. When oxygen mole fraction is increased from 0.5 to 0.9, it is probable that attached fluorine atoms at the surface of the fibers reacted with other components. As increased oxyfluorination time and decreased its pressures, semi-covalent peak is increased at 0.5 of oxygen mole fraction. The total surface free energy of oxyfluorinated carbon fibers decreased with increasing oxygen mole fraction over 0.5. These results indicate that the surface of carbon fibers became much more hydrophilic after the short oxyfluorination. The surface free energy of oxyfluorinated carbon fibers progressively decreased after 10 min treatment. The polar components of surface free energies were however, significantly higher for all oxyfluorinated samples than that for the untreated carbon fiber.

The surface of hydrophobic polypropylene (PP) fibers (spun-bonded fabric) was treated by an atmospheric plasma treatment method. These pre-treated hydrophilic PP fabrics were dip-coated in the aqueous poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) solution. PVP layers on the surface of PP fiber were crosslinked by an irradiation of electron beam. The thickness of PVP hydrogels coated on the surface was easily controlled by changing the concentration of PVP in coating solution. The stepwise surface treatment, PVP coating, and hydrogel formation via electron beam irradiation were analyzed by the measurement of contact angle, scanning electron microscopy, and optical microscopy.

For a present study, woven type carbon fibers were surface-modified by oxygen plasma to improve adhesive strength between carbon fibers and epoxy. The change of hydrophilic properties by the plasma modification was investigated through the contact angle measurement and the calculation of surface energy of carbon fiber due to the oxygen plasma modification. FESEM and XPS analyses were performed to study the chemical and physical changes on the surface of carbon fibers due to the oxygen plasma modification. Pin-on-disk wear tests were conducted under dry condition using unmodified and plasma-modified carbon/epoxy composites to investigate the effect of plasma modification on the wear behavior of woven type carbon/epoxy composites. The results showed that the friction coefficient and the wear rate of plasma-modified carbon/epoxy composites were lower than those of unmodified carbon/epoxy composites, respectively. XPS analysis showed that new functional group of a carbonyl type was created on the carbon fibers by the $O_2$ plasma treatment, which enhanced adhesive strength between carbon fibers and epoxy, leading to improve wear properties

In the case of fiber/rubber composites for tire applications, the interfacial adhesion between fiber and rubber significantly affects the physical properties of the finished products. Generally, organic synthetic fibers used for tire cords are treated with resorcinol formaldehyde latex(RFL) primer on the surface of the fiber to improve the adhesion to rubber. Changes of adhesion between rubber and tire cords might weaken as temperature rises due to overheating of car engine and friction with road. In this study, the effects of temperature on the primer treated polyketone cord/rubber composites and the changes in interfacial adhesion were investigated. Polyketone cord/rubber composites were prepared after RFL solution treatment on the surface of polyketone fibers. After that, composites was thermally aged at different temperature conditions(60, 80, 100, $120^{\circ}C$) and times(1, 5, 10, 15days). The adhesion strength of polyketone cord/rubber composite treated with RFL primer was higher than untreated composite by more than 3 times. After heat aging, the adhesion strength of untreated polyketone cord/rubber composites increased while the RFL treated polyketone cord/rubber composites decreased somewhat.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), PVDF-HFP, hollow fiber membranes were prepared by the dry/wet spinning technique using different polyethylene glycol (PEG) concentrations as non-solvent additive in the dope solution. Two different PEG concentrations (3 and 5 wt.%). The morphology and structural characteristics of the hollow fiber membranes were studied by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and void volume fraction. The experimental permeate flux and the salt (NaCl) rejection factor were determined using direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process. An increase of the PEG content in the spinning solution resulted in a faster coagulation of the PVDF-HFP copolymer and a transition of the cross-section internal layer structure from a sponge-type structure to a finger-type structure. Pore size, nodule size and roughness parameters of both the internal and external hollow fiber surfaces were determined by AFM. It was observed that both the pore size and roughness of the internal surface of the hollow fibers enhanced with increasing the PEG concentration, whereas no change was observed at the outer surface. The void volume fraction increased with the increase of the PEG content in the spinning solution resulting in a higher DCMD flux and a smaller salt rejection factor.
The adsorption characteristics of bovine serum albumin(BSA) on the modified carbon fiber and cellulose surfaces were investigated. In order to define the effects of solid surface characteristics on protein adsorption, surfaces of carbon fiber and cellulose were modified by physical and chemical treatment. The amounts of BSA adsorbed onto various solid surfaces were evaluated by batch method under various pH and ionic strength. The amount of adsorbed BSA was highly dependent on pH as well as surface functional groups.
Three different silicone polymer systems, such as aminofunctional, epoxyfunctional, and hydrophilic epoxyfunctional silicone polymers, were applied onto plasma pretreated wool fabric to improve the dimensional properties. The results showed that the plasma pretreatment modified the cuticle surface of the wool fiber and increased the reactivity of wool fabric toward silicone polymers. Felting shrinkage of plasma and silicone treated wool fabric was decreased with different level depending on the applied polymer system. Fabric tear strength and hand were adversely affected by plasma treatment, but these properties were favorably restored on polymer application. Therefore, it has been concluded that the combination of plasma and silicone treatments can achieve the improved dimensional stability, and better performance properties of wool fabric. The surface smoothness appearances of treated fabrics were measured using a new evaluation system, which showed good correspondence with the results of KES-FB4 surface tester.
