Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars have been recently used to reinforce concrete members in flexure due to their high tensile strength and especially in corrosive environments to improve the durability of concrete structures. However, FRPs have a low modulus of elasticity and a linear elastic behavior up to rupture, thus reinforced concrete (RC) components with such materials would exhibit a less ductility in comparison with steel reinforcement at the similar members. There were several studies showed the behavior of concrete beams with the hybrid combination of steel and FRP longitudinal reinforcement by adopting the experimental and numerical programs. The current study presents a numerical and analytical investigation based on the data of previous researches. Three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) models of beams by using ANSYS are built and investigated. In addition, this study also discusses on the design methods for hybrid FRP-steel beams in terms of ultimate moment capacity, load-deflection response, crack width, and ductility. The effects of the reinforcement ratio, concrete compressive strength, arrangement of reinforcement, and the length of FRP bars on the mechanical performance of hybrid beams are considered as a parametric study by means of FE method. The results obtained from this study are compared and verified with the experimental and numerical data of the literature. This study provides insight into the mechanical performances of hybrid FRP-steel RC beams, builds the reliable FE models which can be used to predict the structural behavior of hybrid RC beams, offers a rational design method together with an useful database to evaluate the ductility for concrete beams with the combination of FRP and steel reinforcement, and motivates the further development in the future research by applying parametric study.

In this study, to evaluate the shrinkage behavior of ultra high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) under restrained condition, restrained shrinkage test was performed according to ring-test mostly used at home and abroad. Ring-test was performed with the various thicknesses and radii of inner steel ring to give different degree of restraint. Free shrinkage and tensile tests were carried out simultaneously to estimate the degree of restraint, stress relaxation, and shrinkage cracking potential. Test results indicated that the average steel strain and residual tensile stress were reduced as the thicker inner steel ring was used, whereas degree of restraint was increased. The steel strain, residual tensile stress and degree of restraint were hardly affected by the size of radius of inner ring. In the case of all ring specimens, shrinkage crack did not occur because the residual tensile stress was lower than the tensile strength. About 39~65% of the elastic shrinkage stress was relaxed by the sustained interface pressure, and the maximum relaxed stress was increased as the thicker inner ring was applied. Finally, the degree of restraint with age was predicted by performing non-linear regression analysis, and it was in good agreement with the test results.
Cellulose fibers, being fairly strong and stiff as well as cheap and plentiful with low energy demand during manufacture, are strong contenders for the reinforcement of cement-based materials. Cellulose fiber-cement composites, generally manufactured by slurry-dewatering procedure, can find applications in the production of flat and corrugated cement sheets and many other thin-sheet cement products. This paper presents the results of an experimental study concerned with the effects of fiber content and moisture conditions on the flexural performance of these composites. An effort was also made to study the effect of pozzolanic admixtures on the flexural performance in different moisture conditions. The test results obtained were analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance in order to derive reliable conclusions. The results generated in this study were indicative of significant effects of fiber content and moisture condition of flexural performance. There is a tendency in flexural strength to increase in increase in fiber content up to 8%: flexural toughness values continue to increase even at higher fiber contents. Moisture content has a significant effect on the flexural performance. There is a tendency in flexural strength to decrease and flexural toughness to increase with increasing moisture content Composites incorporating pozzolans showed an increase in the flexural strength while slightly reducing the flexural toughness and were sensitive to variations in moisture content.

To design structures with Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC), it is necessary to estimate the mechanical properties first of all. The most attractive characteristics of UHPC are the considerable tensile strength and behavior. Therefore the most important thing in order to properly design UHPC structures is to establish the constitutive model to represent the tensile behavior of UHPC. In this study, it was tried to find out the tensile behavior of UHPC by experiments and analyses. Through comparisons with the French SETRA/AFGC recommendations and the Japanese recommendations for the Ultra High-Strength Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Structures, a reasonable model which could represent the tensile stress-strain relationship in the structural design was proposed
The primary aim of this study is to develop a three dimensional finite element (FE) model to predict the axial stress-strain relationship and ultimate strength of the FRP-wrapped UHPC columns by comparing experimental results. The reliability of four selected confinement models and three design codes such as ACI-440, CSA-S806-02, and ISIS CANADA is also evaluated in terms of agreement with the experimental results. Totally 6 unconfined and 36 different types of the FRP-wrapped UHPC columns are tested under monotonic axial compression. The values of ultimate strengths of FRP-wrapped UHPC columns obtained from the experimental results are compared and verified with finite element (FE) analysis results and the design codes mentioned above. The concrete damage plasticity model (CDPM) in Abaqus is utilized to represent the confined behavior of the UHPC. The results indicate that agreement between the test results and the non-linear FE analysis results is highly satisfactory. The CSA-S806-02 design code is considered more reliable than the ACI-440 and the ISIS CANADA design codes to calculate the ultimate strength of the FRP-wrapped UHPC columns. None of the selected confinement models that are developed for FRP-wrapped low and normal strength concrete columns can safely predict the ultimate strength of FRP-wrapped UHPC columns.

The effect of glass fibres (GF) and polypropylene fibres (PPF) on the fresh properties and mechanical properties of lightweight concrete (LWC) exposed to high temperatures is investigated in this study. In this study, fifteen LWC mixtures were carried out in three different groups reinforced with PPF or GF fibers by 0%, 0.2%, and 0.4% by volume of concrete. The first group included aluminum powder (AP) as an air agent at 0.03% with the normal weight coarse aggregate (NWCA) by 100% of the weight of coarse aggregate. In the second group, 33% of the NWCA weight was replaced by lightweight coarse aggregate (LWCA). In the third group, 67% of the NWCA weight was replaced by LWCA. The slump, unit weight, Compressive strength (CS), tensile strength (TS), and flexural strength (FS) were examined. For two hours, the CS and FS were subjected to elevated temperatures of 200℃, 400℃, and 600℃, in addition to microstructure analysis of concrete. In comparison to the reference mixture, the fresh properties and bulk density of LWC decreased with the use of the air agent or the replacement of 67% of the NWCA with LWCA. As a result of the fiber addition, both the slump test and the bulk density decreased. The addition of fibers increased the CS; the highest CS was 38.5 MPa when 0.4% GF was added, compared to 28.9 MPa for the reference mixture at the test age of 28 days. In addition, flexural and TS increased by 53% and 38%, respectively, for 0.4% GF mixes. As well as, adding 0.4% GF to LWC maintained a higher CS than other mixtures.
High quality and expedient processing repair methods are necessary to enhance the service life of bridge structures. Deterioration of concrete can occur as a result of structural cracks, corrosion of reinforcement, and freeze.thaw cycles. Cost effective methods with potential for field implementation are necessary to address the issue of the vulnerability of bridge structures and how to repair them. Most infrastructure related applications of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs) use traditional hand lay-up technology. The hand lay-up is tedious, labor-intensive and relies upon personnel skill level. An alternative to traditional hand lay-up of FRP for infrastructure applications is Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM). VARTM uses single sided molding technology to infuse resin over fabrics wrapping large structures, such as bridge girders and columns. There is no work currently available in understanding the interface developed, when VARTM processing is adopted to wrap fibers such as carbon and/or glass over concrete structures. This paper investigates the interface formed by carbon fiber processed on to a concrete surface using the VARTM technique. Various surface treatments, including sandblasting, were performed to study the pull-off tensile test to find a potential prepared surface. A single-lap shear test was used to study the bond strength of CFRP fabric/epoxy composite adhered to concrete. Carbon fiber wraps incorporating Sikadur HEX 103C and low viscosity epoxy resin Sikadur 300 were considered in VARTM processing of concrete specimens.

In this study, high strength aluminum alloys (AA) plates are proposed as a new construction material for strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate AA plate's suitability as externally bonded reinforcing (EBR) materials for retrofitting shear deficient beams. A total of twenty RC beams designed to fail in shear were strengthened with different spacing and orientations. The specimens were loaded with four-points loading till failure. The considered outcome parameters included load carrying capacity, deflection, strain in plates, and failure modes. The results of all tested beams showed an increase up to 37% in the load carrying capacity and also an increase in deflection compared to the control un-strengthened beams. This demonstrated the potential of adopting AA plates as EBR material. Finally, the shear contribution from the AA plates was predicted using the models available in the ACI440-08, TR55 and FIB14 design code for fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) plates. The predicted results were compared to experimental testing data with the ratio of the experimentally measured ultimate load to predicted load, range on the average, between 93% and 97%.

Recently, the public interest in eco-friendly material and structure has been increasing and many Hwang-toh researches are being actively performed. Hwang-toh is one of the traditional environment friendly construction materials used as a construction and plastering material. Hwang-toh has many advantages as construction material due to its high heat storage capacity, auto-purification, antibiotic ability, and infrared ray emission characteristics. But, currently it has not been developed into construction material and used in modern construction due to its low strength and dry shrinkage cracking prone characteristics. According to the recent researches and study results, Hwang-toh can be used as a natural pozzolanic material like fly-ash or pozzolan. In this study, mechanical properties and structural flexure behavior experiments of slag, recycled PET fiber, and Hwang-toh added concrete are carried out. The test results showed that drying shrinkage of concrete mixed with Hwang-toh has lower compressive strength and elastic modulus than those of control cement concrete specimen, but it has the similar flexural behavior in reinforced concrete beams.
It is widely known that axially loaded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) confined concrete presents significant and enhanced mechanical properties with reference to the unconfined concrete. Therefore, to predict the mechanical behavior of FRP-confined concrete two quantities-peak strength and ultimate strain are required. Despite the significant advances, the determination of the ultimate strain of FRP-confined concrete is one of the most challenging problems to be resolved. This is often attributed to our persistence in desiring the conventional methods as the sole technique to examine this phenomenon and the complex nature of the ultimate strain of FRP-confined concrete. To bridge the research gap, this study adopted two machine learning (ML) techniques-artificial neural network (ANN) and Gaussian process regression (GPR)-to analyze observations obtained from 627 datasets of FRP-confined concrete circular and non-circular sections under axial loading test. Besides, the techniques are also used to predict the ultimate strain of FRP-confined concrete. Seven parameters namely width/diameter of the specimens, corner radius ratio, the strength of concrete, FRP elastic modulus, FRP thickness, FRP tensile rupture strain, and the axial strain of unconfined concrete-are the input parameters used to predict the ultimate strain of FRP-confined concrete. The results of the current study highlight the merit of using AI techniques in structural engineering applications given their extraordinary ability to comprehend multidimensional phenomena of FRP-confined concrete structures with ease, low computational cost, and high performance over the existing empirical models.
