  • This paper deals with critical buckling load optimization of symmetric angle-ply laminated stepped flat columns under axial compression load. The design objective is the maximization of the critical buckling load and the design variable is the fiber orientations in the layers of the laminates. The classical laminate plate theory is used for the finite element solution of the laminated stepped flat columns. The modified feasible direction (MFD) method is used for the optimization routine. For this purpose, a program based on FORTRAN is exploited. Finally, the optimization results are presented for width ratios (b/B), ratios of fillet radius ($r_1/r_2$), aspect ratios (L/B) and boundary conditions. The results are presented in graphical and tabular forms and the results are compared.

  • The evolution of lectures and microstructure during the warm-rolling and subsequent annealing in aluminum 3004 alloy sheets was investigated by employing X-ray texture measurements and microstructure observations. Whereas the typical $\beta$-fiber orientations with the strong Bs-orientation $\{112\}<110>$ formed in the normally cold-rolled specimen, the warm-rolling at $250^{\circ}C$ led to the development of a strong through thickness texture gradient which was characterized by shear texture at the surface layer and rolling textures at the center layer After warm rolling, ultra-fine grains formed in the thickness layer with shear texture components. Upon recrystallization annealing, the $\{001\}<100>$ Cube-texture developed at the expense of normal rolling texture components the rise to the formation of corase recrystallized grains. However, in the layer with shear texture components the continuous recrystallization took place and the fine grain size persisted even after recrystallization annealing.

  • Recently Western countries are now beginning to use ACM (Advanced Composites Material), in the construction industry Compared with existing construction materials, ACM possesses many advantages such as light-weight, high-strength, corrosion resistant property. Among other fabrication process of ACM, pultrusion is one of the promising one for civil infrastructure application. In this paper, the structural characteristics of pultruded GFRP strip and structural members of angle and tube type were studied. For the strip, parametric studies of pultrusion process has been carried out. Considered parameters were volume fraction, temperature, pulling speed and fiber orientations. For the pultruded angle and tube, compression test and buckling analysis has been carried out. The results were compared with calculated values using coded formulae

  • Optimization of the collocated piezoceramic sensor/actuator placement is investigated numerically and verified experimentally for vibration control of laminated composite plates. The finite element method is used for the analysis of dynamic characteristics of the laminated composite plates with the piezoceramic sensor/actuator. The structural damping index(SDI) is defined from the modal damping. It is chosen as the objective function for optimization. Weights for each vibrational mode are taken into account in the SDI calculation. The gradient method is used for the optimization. Optimum location of the piezoceramic sensor/actuator is determined by maximizing tie SDI. Numerical simulation and experimental results show that the optimum location of the piezoceramic sensor/actuator is dependent upon the outer layer fiber orientations of the plate, and location and size of the piezoceramic sensor/actuator.

  • The bridge columns with lap-splice reinforcements in earthquake suffered a brittle bond-slip failure due to deterioration of the lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcements without developing its flexural capacity or ductility. In this case, such a brittle failure can be controlled by the seismic retrofit using FRP wrapping. The retrofitted columns using FRP wrapping showed significant improvement in seismic performance due to FRP's confinement effect. This paper presents the circumferential confinement effect of existing circular bridge pier strengthened with FRP wrapping for poor lap-splice details. The effects on the confinement of FRP wrapping, such as gap lengths between footing and FRP, fiber orientations, and thicknesses of FRP, were investigated by quasi-static experiments.

  • To understand the tensile behaviors of GFRP at low temperature, three types of specimen have been used in this study. Tensile properties and fracture mechanisms for three orthogonal orientations of plain weave glass fabric reinforced epoxy resin laminate were investigated at temperature range of about -30 to $15^{\circ}C$. The tensile properties of axial and edge type specimen decrease slightly with decreasing temperature to $-20^{\circ}C$. However, at $-30^{\circ}C$ the decreases in the tensile properties increased considerably. Below $-20^{\circ}C$, thickness type specimen showed a marked decreases in the tensile properties. It was obvious that the fracture manner of thickness type specimen was adhesive failure at above $-10^{\circ}C$ and a mixed adhesive and cohesive failure at below $-20^{\circ}C$.

  • Active control of flexural vibrations of smart laminated composite beams has been carried out using piezoceramic sensor/actuator and viscoelastic material. The beams with passive constrained-layer damping have been analyzed by formulating the equations of motion through the use of extended Hamilton's principle. The dynamic characteristics such as damping ratio and modal damping of the beam are calculated for various fiber orientations by means of iterative complex eigensolution method, This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity.

  • For a large scale civil and architectural structures, mainly steel, concrete and aluminum have been used and weight and corrosion of materials became a major concern. Designing with composite materials is very much complicated. Simple classical theory may yield good results for selecting "initial" sections for preliminary design. D. H. Kim proposed to use the quasi-isotropic constants by Tsai for the preliminary design of the composite primary structures for the civil construction. Also he made simple equation using correction factor. In this paper, the simple formulas developed by D. H. Kim to obtain "exact" values of the natural frequencies of [ABBCAAB]r laminate are compared with Whitney's equations. Also natural frequencies of the plate with varying aspect ratios and reinforcing fiber orientations, are compared with natural frequencies of bean. This work can be a guideline to obtain data in many other cases.

  • The objective of this thesis is to develop the optimal design of composite links containing complicated cross-section. To accomplish this objective, a composite links structural analysis program was developed. The method of calculating effective modulus of composite beam containing complicated cross-section is proposed. Genetic algorithm was implemented for the optimization method to manipulate the discrete ply angles as the design variables and to utilize its high reliability to find the global optimum. The design variables were the number of plies, the fiber orientations and the stacking sequence. The optimal design of composite links was performed by genetic algorithm to minimize the weight of the structure and to constrain ply failure

  • This study aims to develop efficient composite laminates for buckling load enhancement, interlaminar shear stress minimization, and weight reduction. This goal is achieved through cover-skin lay-ups around skins and stiffeners, which amplify bending stiffness and defer delamination by means of effective stress distribution. The design problem is formulated as multi-objective optimization that maximizes buckling load capability while minimizing both maximum out-of-plane shear stress and panel weight. For efficient optimization, response surface methodology is employed for buckling load, two out-of-plane shear stresses, and panel weight with respect to one ply thickness, six fiber orientations of a skin, and four stiffener heights. Numerical results show that skin-covered composite stiffened panels can be devised for maximum buckling load and minimum interlaminar shear stresses under compressive load. In addition, the effects of different material properties are investigated and compared. The obtained results reveal that the composite stiffened panel with Kevlar material is the most effective design.
