  • The outer diameter finishing grinding process required for ferrules, which are widely used as fiber optic connectors, is carried out by high-precision centerless grinding machines. In this study, the thermal characteristics of such a machine, for example, the temperature distribution, temperature rise, and thermal deformation, were estimated based on a virtual prototype and the heat generation rates of heat sources related to normal operating conditions. The prototype consisted of a concrete-filled bed. hydrostatic grinding wheel (GW) and regulating wheel (RW) spindle systems, a hydrostatic RW feed mechanism, a RW swivel mechanism, and on-machine GW and RW dressers. The reliability of the predicted results was demonstrated using temperature characteristics measured from a physical prototype. The predicted and measured results indicated that this particular high-precision centerless grinding machine had very stable thermal characteristics.

  • In this work, silver nanoparticles-containing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) solutions in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were electrospun to be webs consisting of nanofibers. The inputted voltage and PAN content in the solution were fixed at 15 kV and 10 wt.% in DMF with 10 cm of tip-to-collector distance (TCD). The PAN/Ag nanofiber webs were stabilized by oxidation at 250 ${^{\circ}C}$ for 2 h in air and carbonized at 1000 ${^{\circ}C}$ for 2 h in $N_2$. The resultant diameter distribution and morphologies of the nanofibers were evaluated by scanning electron microscope analysis. The electrochemical behaviors of the nanofiber webs were also observed by cyclic voltammetry tests. It was found that the presence of silver nanoparticles in carbon nanofiber webs led to the increase of specific capacitance and the decrease of fiber diameters.

  • Wireless optical communication is expected for high-speed optical communication in the areas of saturated optical fiber communication and low population density. In this paper, we present an optical transmitter system for wireless optical communication with new design concepts different from the usual optical imaging system. The specifications are the following: the source is a laser diode(LD) of wavelength 830 nm in which the divergent angle from the tangential plane differs from that from the sagittal plane. Here, the requested transmission distances are very long range such as 500 m to 1500 m and beam diameter is 3 m at the receiver with symmetrical energy distribution. For the evaluation characteristics of this kind of non-imaging system, two optical quantities, the relative illumination distribution and energy transfer efficiency, are numerically calculated through lots of ray tracing.

  • In this study, projectiles with 2 kinds of nose shape: spherical and flat were impacted into normal concrete and fiber reinforced concrete panels. The fracture depth and form, crater diameter, tensile strain at rear face were evaluated. It was confirmed that smaller projectile nose areas resulted in deeper penetrations associated with concentrated impact forces and small front-face crater diameters in impact test. Conversely, larger projectile nose areas resulted in shallower penetrations and larger front-face fracture diameters. Similar front-face failure and strain distribution relationships based on the projectile nose shape were observed for normal and fiber-reinforced concrete although the rear-face tensile strain and scabbing were significantly reduced by the fiber reinforcement. In addition, a direct relationship was confirmed between the penetration depth based on the projectile nose shape and the tensile strain on the rear face. Thus the impact strain behavior is required to predict the scabbing behavior with penetration depth.

  • The electrospinning process was established as a promising method to fabricate nano and micro-textured scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. A BCP-loaded PCL micro-textured scaffold thus can be a viable option. The biocompatibility as well as the mechanical properties of such scaffold materials should be optimized for this purpose. In this study, a composite scaffold of poly ($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL)-biphase calcium phosphate (BCP) was successfully fabricated by electrospinning. EDS and XRD data show successful loading of BCP nano particles in the PCL fibers. Morphological characterization of fibers shows that with a higher loaded BCP content the fiber surface was rougher and the diameter was approximately 1 to 7 ${\mu}m$. Tensile modulus and ultimate tensile stress reached their highest values in the PCL- 10 wt% BCP composite. When content of nano ceramic particles was low, they were dispersed in the fibers as reinforcements for the polymer matrix. However, at a high content of ceramic particles, the particles tend to agglomerate and lead to decreasing tensile modulus and ultimate stress of the PCL-BCP composite mats. Therefore, the use of nano BCP content for distribution in fiber polymer using BCP for reinforcement is limited. Tensile strain decreased with increasing content of BCP loading. From in vitro study using MG-63 osteoblast cells and L-929 fibroblast like cells, it was confirmed that electrospun PCL-BCP composite mats were biocompatible and that spreading behavior was good. As BCP content increased, the area of cell spreading on the surface of the mats also increased. Cells showed the best adherence on the surface of composite mats at 50 wt% BCP for both L-929 fibroblast-like cells and MG-63 osteoblast cell. PCL- BCP composites are a promising material for application in bone scaffolds.

  • Friction in a post-tensioning system has a significant effect on the distribution of the prestressing force of tendons in prestressed concrete structures. However, attempts to derive friction coefficients using conventional electrical resistance strain gauges do not usually lead to reliable results, mainly due to the damage of sensors and lead wires during the insertion of strands into the sheath and during tensioning. In order to overcome these drawbacks of the existing measurement system, the Smart Strand was developed in this study to accurately measure the strain and prestressing force along the strand. In the Smart Strand, the core wire of a 7-wire strand is replaced with carbon fiber reinforced polymer in which the fiber Bragg grating sensors are embedded. As one of the applications of the Smart Strand, friction coefficients were evaluated using a full-scale test of a 20 m long beam. The test variables were the curvature, diameter, and filling ratio of the sheath. The analysis results showed the average wobble and curvature friction coefficients of 0.0038/m and 0.21/radian, respectively, which correspond to the middle of the range specified in ACI 318-08 in the U.S. and Structural Concrete Design Code in Korea. Also, the accuracy of the coefficients was improved by reducing the effective range specified in these codes by 27-34 %. This study shows the wide range of applicability of the developed Smart Strand system.

  • BACKGROUND: Generally, ammonia occurs from agricultural waste disposal. Ammonia is known as a harmful substance to the human body and has a bad influence such as eutrophication on the ecosystem. It is possible to remove the ammonia by ammonia adsorption method using natural zeolite, without external influence. However, due to the natural zeolite shape, it is hard to reuse. METHODS AND RESULTS: Electrospinning method can produce fiber with constant diameter. Moreover, electrospinning method has no limitation for selecting the material to make the fiber, and thus, it is valuable to reform the surface of adsorbent. In this study, reusable membrane was made by electrospinning method. The highest removal efficiency was shown from the membrane with 20% of zeolite included, and it has been verified that it is possible to reuse the membrane through chemical treatment. The highest ammonia removal efficiency was about 92.4%. CONCLUSION: In this study, ammonia adsorption characteristics of zeolite fibers were studied. Electrospinning method can produce zeolite fiber with even distribution. Ammonia can be removed efficiently from ion exchange ability of the natural zeolite. The result of adsorption isotherm indicated that both Freundlich model and Langmuir model provided the best fit for equilibrium data. And study on desorption has demonstrated that the ion exchange from zeolite was reversible when 0.01 M NaCl and KCl solution were used.

  • To perform the finish outside-diameter grinding process of ferrules which are widely used as fiber optic connectors, a high-precision centerless grinding machine is necessary. In this study, the thermal characteristics of the high-precision centerless grinding machine such as the temperature distribution, temperature rise and thermal deformation, are estimated based on the virtual prototype of the grinding machine and the heat generation rates of heat sources related to the machine operation conditions. • Pressure drop and flow characteristics through a filter medium have been investigated numerically. A basic model similar to the filter employed in a hard disk drive was established so that the inflow velocity was 0.1 m/s and the box size was $40mm{\times}50mm{\times}30mm$. The filter medium specifications were 0.38mm of thickness, $1{\mu}m$ of fiber diameter, 0.05 of packing density. And the filter medium was pleated by 10 within the filter box. Twenty-one sets of calculation were performed with different inlet velocities, pleated numbers, and packing densities from the basic model. As the result, it was found that the velocity after filter medium had maximum value at the rear of the upstream pleated line, but had minimum value at the rear of the downstream pleated line. This made the velocity distribution have sinusoidal form immediately after the filter medium. As the inlet velocity increased, the pressure drop increased linearly. But as the packing density increased the pressure drop increased quadratically.

  • This experimental investigation has been conducted to determine the effects of swirling angle and flow patterns on distributions of void fraction, bubble velocity and two-phase pressure drop in a vertical straight tube. Swirling angles of $0^{\circ}$ (non swirling), $30^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$ were tested with air-water two components over a range of superficial air velocities. A transparent lucite tube of 38mm in internal diameter was used for the test section. The void fraction and bubble velocities were measured by means of a optical fiber probe at the upper part of the swirler in the test section. Pressure drops which seem to be closely related with flow patterns and swirling angle were measured by a differential pressure transducer. It is shown that the probability density functions of pressure drop demonstrate peculiar features for both swirling angles and flow patterns, whereas the distributions of void fraction and bubble velocities are parabolic and flat shape in the vicinity of tube center, respectively except bubbly flow in any swirling angle cases, and the void fraction increases with increasing swirling angle around the center of tube.
