This paper presents a preliminary study to monitor the lateral behavior of pile foundation using multiplexed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. In the preliminary study, an 1.7 meter long cantilever beam with the shape of square hollow box was fabricated and tested under the static loading. Four FBG sensors were multiplexed in a single optical fiber and installed into the top and bottom of the cantilever beam. The strains are directly measured from FBG sensors followed by curvature calculations based on the plane section assumption. Vertical deflections are then estimated using the regression analyses based on the geometric relationships. It has been found that excellent correlation with conventional sensing system was observed. The success of the test encourages the use of the FBG sensing system as a monitoring system for pile foundations. However, further consideration should be given in the case of the sensor malfunction for the practical purpose.
In this paper, a Fiber Bragg Grating (FRG) sensor system is described and FBGs are well-suited for long term and extremely severe experiments, where traditional strain gauges fail. In the system, a reflect wave-length measurement method which employs a tunable light source to find out the center wave-length of FBG sensor is used. We apply the FBG system to nuclear energy Power Plant for structural integrity test to measure the displacement of the structure under designed pressure and to check the elasticity of the structure by measuring the residual strain. The system works very well and it is expected that it can be used for a real-time strain. temperature and vibration detector of smart structure.
FBGs have been extensively used as strain sensors or temperature sensors in a variety of applications related to composites because of embedding ability, small size and multiplexing capability. We inspected embedding environments inside composites with optical fiber by microscope analysis and birefringence characteristics of FBG embedded into textile composite laminate by cure monitoring using a high power WSFL. The cure monitoring of the cases with the striped FBG and the recoated FBG provided comprehensive understandings about the birefringence effect induced by the transverse stress. And these results allowed to consider a recoating method as an important tool to relieve birefringence.
We developed a noise reduction algorithm for the measurement accuracy improvement of a fiber-optic distributed temperaure sensor system. The denoising technique is based on the wavelet transform. The proposed algorithm was applied to a FBG sensor output with the Gaussian line-fitting algorithm to minimize the output noise which originated from the intensity noise of the laser light source and the instability of signal porcessing. We confirmed the feasibility of the denoising algorithm by comparing the measurement results with those obtained with the Gaussian line-fitting algorithm only.
This paper reports on measurement method for the fiber optic strain monitoring of overhead contact line systems of trains. We used fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors to measure the strain variation of overhead contact line. FBG sensors were attached on the contact line and connected to the monitering system with optical fibers. The monitering system with FBG sensors showed very good sensitivity to measuring strain variation and this system could be applied to the overhead contact line of KTX.

The objective of this work is to present a conceptual design and the modelling of a distributed sensor system based on fiber optic devices (Fiber Bragg Grating, FBG), aimed at measuring span-wise and chord-wise variations of an adaptive (morphing) trailing edge. The network is made of two different integrated solutions for revealing deformations of the reference morphing structure. Strains are confined to typical values along the span (length) but they are expected to overcome standard ranges along the chord (width), up to almost 10%. In this case, suitable architectures may introduce proper modulations to keep the measured deformation low while preserving the information content. In the current paper, the designed monitoring system combines the use of a span-wise fiber reinforced patch with a chord-wise sliding beam. The two elements make up a closed grid, allowing the reconstruction of the complete deformed shape under the acceptable assumption that the transformation refers to regular geometry variations. Herein, the design logic and some integration issues are reported. Preliminary experimental test results are finally presented.
In this paper, we present the simultaneous measurement of the fabricaition strain and temperature during and after cure of unsymmetric composite laminate uising fiber optic sensors. Fiber Bragg grating/extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric (FBG/EFPl) hybrid sensors are used to measure those measurands. The characteristic matrix of sensor is analytically derived and measurements can be done without sensor calibration. A wavelength-swept fiber laser is utilized as a light source. FBG/EFPI sensors are embedded in a graphite/epoxy unsymmetric cross-ply composite laminate at different direction and different location. We perform the real time measurement of fabrication strains and temperatures at two points of the composite laminate during cure process in an autoclave. Also, the thermal strains and temperatures of the fabricated laminate are measured in thermal chamber. Through these experiments, we can provide a basis for the efficient smart processing of composite and know the thermal behavior of unsymmetric cross-ply composite laminate.

In order to extend the lifetime of buildings and civil infrastructure, patch type fibrous composite retrofitting materials are widely used. Retrofitted concrete columns and beams gain stiffness and strength, but lose toughness and show brittle failure. Usually, the cracks in concrete structures are visible to the naked eye and the status of the structure in the life cycle is estimated through visual inspections. After retrofitting of the structure, crack visibility is blocked by retrofitted composite materials. Therefore, structural monitoring after retrofitting is indispensable and self diagnosis method with optical fiber sensors is very useful. In this paper, we try to detect the peel out effect and find the strain difference between the main structure and retrofitting patch material when they separate from each other. In the experiment, two fiber optic Bragg grating sensors are applied to the main concrete structure and the patching material separately at the same position. The sensors show coincident behaviors at the initial loading, but different behaviors after a certain load. The test results show the possibility of optical fiber sensor monitoring of beam structures retrofitted by the composite patches.
