  • To temperature-compensate the Bragg wavelength of fiber grating filters two materials with different thermal expansion coefficients were depolyed for packaging. After temperature-compensation packaging the maximum difference of the Bragg wavelength in the temperature range of $-10^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$ was 0.03nm, which is only about one thirtiety of the Bragg wavelength shift of the temperature-uncompensated fiber grating filter.

  • We have proposed and demonstrated an gas-flow sensor using optical fiber bragg grating(FEG). The flow sensor has no electronics and no mechanical parts in its sensing part and the structure is th11s simple and immune to electromagnetic interference(EMI). The FEG sensor was consisted qf the sensing element and a coil heater. The metal coil was used to supply the current to the FEG. While some currents supply to the coil, the refractive index of the FEG under the coil is changed and thus the wavelength shift of fiber optic sensor was induced In this work, the wavelength shift according to flow-rate was experimentally studied and was used to evaluate the gas flow-rate in a gas tube. As a result, it was possible to measure the flow-rate in a linear range from 5 to $20{\ell}/min$ with a resolution of approximately $1{\ell}/min$ at the applied currents of 100 mA and 120 mA. The measured sensitivities were $15.3\;pm/\ell/min$ for 100 mA and $20.2\;pm/\ell/min$ for 120 mA.

  • Smart structure that contains sensors, which are either embedded in a composite material or attached to a structure, is currently receiving considerable attention. Fiber Bragg grating sensor, one of the optical fiber sensors, has been widely used to sense strain and temperature for smart structures since both parameters change the resonant frequency of the grating. In this paper, according to the various heating and cooling conditions the thermal behavior of unidirectional composite material was monitored by embedding the fiber Bragg grating sensors in the longitudinal and transverse directions of unidirectional composites. The thermal behavior of unidirectional composite material was monitored for various heating and cooling rates and applied pressure. It was found that the thermal behavior was unaffected by pressure variations and heating and cooling rates applied to the composites. The thermal strains were measured by considering the shift in Bragg wavelength that was generated by the thermal expansion of composite specimen. The longitudinal and transverse C.T.E.'s were also obtained from the corresponding temperature-thermal strain curves.

  • We constructed a very accurate fiber bragg grating sensor system using an unbalanced mach-zehnder interferometer which converts the measurand-induced bragg wavelength shift to phase change of th einterference signal. With a shielded reference grating, output phase drift which orginates from the thermal drift on the interferometer was compensated. Mesured accuracy of the constructed system was 0.03 .deg. C and 0.26.mu. strain for temperature and strain measuremtn, respectively. It is over 300 times better resolution compared to the conventional optical spectrum analyzer which has 0.1nm wavelength resolution capability.

  • This study was performed to verify the behaviors of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors attached to the containment structure in the nuclear power plant as a part of structural integrity test which demonstrates that the structural response of the non-prototype primary containment structure is within predicted limits plus tolerances when pressurized to $115\%$ of containment design pressure, and that the containment does not sustain any structural damage.

  • In this paper, we present high-temperature characteristics of tunable all-optic filter using fiber Bragg grating(FBG), including peak reflectivity, FWHM bandwidth, refractive index change along temperature variation. The characteristics of a FBG tunable filter with refractive index change is affected by its thermal stability.

  • A new fabrication method of FBG sensor with gage length shorter than 10 mm is introduced using the reflection prism with special coating on the surface. It is verified that the bandwidth of FBG sensor increases exponentially as the gage length of it decreases. The transverse stress and strain gradient induced by local stress concentration which occurs during curing has an influence on the FBG sensor with gage length of 2 mm less than that of 10 mm.

  • Dense Wavelength division multiplexing(DWDM) lightwave system requires multiplexer, demultiplexer and optical filter. In this paper, thus, we propose the Add-Drop Mux/Demux based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer(MZI) with fiber Bragg grating(FBG). The Add-Drop Mux/Demux using FBG and MZI is able to minimize system and reduce weight. We also analyze output characteristics of Add-Drop Mux/Demux and present the optimum design data through the computer simulation.

  • We present the analysis of phase-shifted fiber Bragg gratings by coupled-mode equations. The transmission is expressed as that of a Fabry-Perot resonator with complex reflectance and complex transmittance. The transmission spectrum, the effective cavity length, and the behaviors with different phase-shifts are investigated. A very flattered transmission peak is obtained by introducing three phase-shifts in a grating.
