The effect of liquid swine manure application rate on the production of green manure crops in paddy

  • The application of liquid swine manure to soil has been commonly reported to increase crop productivity by improving plant nutrient availability. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of liquid swine manure (LSM) application on yield of green manure crops in paddy. Three different application rates of LSM equivalent to 25%, 50%, and 75% of standard fertilization rate of P were applied to the paddy field after rice harvest, and two cover crops, hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), were subsequently mix-seeded and cultivated. Plant height of barley was 7% higher in LSM P25% and LSM P50% compared to control treatment (no LSM application), while no significant difference was observed between LSM P75% and control. However, there were no significant differences in plant height of hairy vetch among treatments. Dry matter (DM) yield of green manure increased with LSM application rate, reaching a maximum at LSM P50% (38 and 17% yield increase over control for hairy vetch and barley, respectively), but it decreased at LSM P75% rate. Nitrogen production by green manure crops was the highest in LSM P50% treatment, where the amount of produced N was 57% higher than the optimum N fertilization level for rice ($90kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$). Excess green manure biomass above an optimum level can be removed and utilized either for incorporation into nearby cropland or for sale as fresh forage. Therefore, it is concluded that the application rate of LSM P50% is recommendable for the maximum biomass and nitrogen production from green manure crops in paddy.

Improving quality of common reed (Phragmites communis Trin.) silage with additives

  • Objective: Common reed (Phragmites communis Trin.) could potentially provide an alternative resource for silage; however, its silage quality is poor. The aim of this study was to investigate the factors in reed that contribute to poor quality and determine how the use of additives at ensiling could improve fermentation quality. Methods: In Experiment 1, we determined the chemical composition and the presence of indigenous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in reed. We further examined fermentation quality of reed silage under conditions without additives (NA) and treated glucose (G), lactic acid bacteria (L), and their combination (G+L). In Experiment 2, silage of NA, and with an addition of cellulase and lactic acid bacteria (CL) were prepared from harvested reed. The harvested reeds were fertilized at nitrogen concentrations of 0, 4, 8, and $12g\;N/m^2$ and were harvested thrice within one year. Results: The indigenous LAB and fermentable carbohydrates are at extremely low concentrations in reed. Reed silage, to which we added G+L, provided the highest quality silage among treatments in Experiment 1. In Experiment 2, N fertilization had no negative effect on silage quality of reed. The harvest times decreased fermentable carbohydrate content in reed. The CL treatment provided a higher lactic acid content compared to the NA treatment. However, the quality of CL treated silage at the second and third harvests was significantly lower than at the first harvest, due to a reduction in carbohydrates caused by frequent harvesting. Conclusion: The causes of poor quality in reed silage are its lack of indigenous LAB and fermentable carbohydrates and its high moisture content. In addition, reed managed by frequent harvesting reduces carbohydrate content. Although the silage quality could be improved by adding CL, higher-quality silage could be prepared by adding fermentable carbohydrates, such as glucose (rather than adding cellulases).

  • In 27 patients with the past history of poor response to the gonadotropin superovulation induction due to poor follicular growth or permature surge of endogenous luteinizing hormone, the effectiveness of pituitary supperssion with the gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist(GnRH-a) in in vitro fertilization(IVF) program was evaluated in 43 cycles using a combination regimen of D-Trp-6 LHRH(Decapeptyl, Ferring)and FSH/hMG from June, 1989 to August, 1990 at Korea University Hospital IVF Clinic. At midluteal phase of menstrual cycle, Decapeptyl-CR was administered by long-term protocol to minimize initial agonistic effect of endogenous gonadotropins. After the confirmation of pituitary suppression, about 2-3 weeks after GNRH-a administration, ovarian follicle growth was stimulated with FSH/hMG and followed by transvaginal ultrasonic measurement of follicle size and by monitoring of serm E2 and LH if necessary. When compared with the control group stimulated with gonadotropin regimen only, the cancellation rate and occurrence rate of premature LH surge during gonadotropin treatment were significantly lower in study group(11.6% and 2.4%, respectively). There is no significant differences in the mean number of aspirated oocytes, fertilization/cleavage rate, embryo transfer(ET) rate, and mean number of embryos transferred between the two groups. The pregnancy rate per treatment cycle, 16.3%, and per ET cycle, 23.3%, were significantly higher in the study group compared with those of control group. These data suggest that GnRH-a therapy is effective for previous poor responder In gonadotropin superovulation induction for IVF.

유기질비료 시용이 삽주의 생육 및 성분에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Organic Fertilizer on Growth and Yield Components of Atractylodes macrocephala)

  • Background: The roots of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidzumi contain atractylone, which is used to suppress appetite and indigestion caused by gastrointestinal disturbance. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of several organic compost on the growth and root yield of A. macrocephala with organic fertilizer. Methods and Results: When organic fertilizer was applied basally, the average yield of 10 a was 184.6 kg in the HA (Hwanggeumjidae, organic material mix), 171.3 kg in the GG (Gyunbaeyangchegreen, bacterial cuture filtrate) and 175.0 kg in the CF (Customary fertilization, control) each other in practice of CF had no statistical significance. Atractylenolide I was significantly greater in the HA (0.036%) than the GG (0.034%) or CF (0.023%). With regard to the amount of organic fertilzer, 10 a yield was the most common of 203.0 kg at 2.0 times of the organic 1 (HA), conventional fertilization of 134.0 kg and 173.0 kg of no application was a statistically significant. Organic fertilizer 1 was 1.5 to 2.0 times, organic fertilizer was 2 to 1.5 times that were most suitable. Conclusions: The results of the present study indicated that HA and GG are the most suitable for the organic cultivation of A. macrocephala. The content of atractylone I was highest under the HA treatment and lowest under the CU (Chamjoa, oil cake), TG (Totogreen, plant oil cake) and HG (Heuksalgreen, Castor oil cake) treatment.

Effect of Timing of Ethephon Treatment on the Formation of Female Flowers and Seeds from Male Plant of Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.)

  • Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is a dioecious plant, although monoecious plants are bred in some cultivars for fiber or seed production. Recently, hemp has received attention for medicinal use with some cannabinoids, including cannabidiol. Self-fertilization for breeding inbred lines is difficult because of dioeciousness and anemophily in hemp. This experiment was conducted to develop a self-fertilization method by forming female flowers and seeds from male plants of dioecious hemp. To induce the formation of female flowers on male plants, 500 mg L-1 of ethephon was sprayed on plants at soon, seven and fourteen days after primordia formation. The plant ratio of female flowers formation and the number of harvested seeds were increased by ethephon treatment. Female flowers of male plants have 5 stigmas in contrast to the dual stigma of female 1plants. Male plant seeds were lighter and smaller than those from female plants. Although the germination rate was lower than that of normal seeds from female plants, the seeds from male plants germinated to grow seedlings. Thus, we suggest that hemp plants should be treated with ethephon at soon after primordia formation to induce the formation of more female flowers on the male plants.

폐색성 무정자증환자의 치료로써 미세적 부고환 정자흡입술(MESA) 및 정자직접주입법(ICSI)의 효과 (The Effect of Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA) and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) as a Treatment for Obstructive Azoosperimia)

  • To present and assess the efficacy of combination of microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration(MESA) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI) for the treatment of infertility due to unreconstructable obstructive azoospermia or congenital bilateral agenesis of vas deferens (CBAVD), MESA was performed in the 45 husbands ( 16 CBAVD, 29 unreconstructable genital tract obstruction), followed by ICSI of oocytes recovered from the wives hyperstimulated by GnRH agonist in combination with hMG and FSH. Cleaving embryos were transfered to the uterine cavity or follopian tube(ZIFT) 18 or 24 hours after ICSI procedure. In 45 cycles of MESA, 492 oocyte complexes were recovered. ICSI was carried out on 355 metaphase II oocytes and 226 oocytes (63.7%) showed normal two pronucleus fertilization. After 198 embryos were transferred in 43 cycles, an average of 5 per cycle, 20 patients presented a positive HCG and intrauterine pregnancy was confirmed by US. So, the clinical ongoing pregnancy rate per transfer was 46.5%. Until now, 8 patients have given birth to 9 babies, 5 male and 4 female, including 1 twin. The babies were all healthy except 1 twin female baby. There was 1 miscarriage at 7 weeks and chromosomal study of abortus revealed as 45X, monosomy. These results suggested that it was possible to achieve high normal fertilization and pregnancy rate by ICSI using epididymal sperm.

대맥의 내산성 품종육성을 위한 기초연구 I. 토양산도와 질소시용량이 대맥품종의 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Soil Acidity and Nitrogen Fertilization on the Growth and Yield of Barley Cultivars)

  • 토양 및 양액의 pH와 질소시용량이 대맥 품종의 생육과 수량에 미치는 영향에 대한 시험결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 양액의 PH가 유묘의 생장에 미치는 영향은 현저하지 않았다. 2. 양액중에 0.6 mM의 Al 처리에 의하여 유묘의 근 및 지상부 생육이 현저히 억제되었는데 두산1002는 거의 생장저해현상이 발생하지 않아 Al에 내성품종으로 나타났다. 3. 엽중의 엽록소함량은 토양 pH의 저하에 따라 감소하였고 질소증가에 따라 엽록소 및 질소함량은 증가하였다. 4. 출수기는 토양 pH의 증가에 따라 1~2일 빨라졌으며 질소증가에 따른 출수기의 변화는 현저하지 않았고 품종에 따라 일정한 경향이 없었다. 5. 간장은 토양 pH의 저하에 따라 현저히 감소하였고 질소증시효과는 현저하지 않았다. 6. 지상부 건물중은 품종에 따라 차이가 있으나 대체로 토양 pH의 감소에 의하여 감소하였고 질소증시에 따라 증가하였다. 7. m$^2$당 수수는 토양 pH가 낮을 때 감소하였는데 그 정도는 새올보리에서 작은 편이었고 질소증시효과는 품종에 따라 다르게 나타났다. 8. 수당립수는 질소증시효과가 별로 나타나지 않았고 pH의 효과는 새올보리, 팔달보리, 강보리 등에서 토양 PH가 낮을수록 감소되었다. 9. 1.000립중은 pH 4.5 수준에서 현저히 감소되었고 질소증시효과는 현저하지 않았다. 10. 수량은 토양 pH가 낮을 때 현저히 감수되었고 생육기의 토양 pH는 모든 공시품종에서 수량과 고도의 유의한 상관을 나타내었으나 질소증시효과는 현저하지 않았으며 토양 pH에 따른 수량의 안정성은 저수품종에서 크고 다수품종에서 작은 것으로 나타났다. 11. 수량은 간장, 건물중, 수당립수 및 1,000립중 등과 고도의 유의상관을 나타내었고, 토양pH에 따른 이들 상관정도의 차이는 현저하지 않았다.

소에서 정자활성, 수정 양상 및 착상전 지속적 수정란 발달에 있어서 환삼덩굴 추출액의 효과 (Effect of Humulus japonicus Extract on Sperm Motility, Fertilization Status and Subsequent Preimplantation Embryo Development in Cattle)

  • Humulus japonicus is an ornamental plant in the Cannabaceae family. Although the mode of action of Humulus japonicus is not fully understood, a strong relationship was observed between anti-inflammatory and anticancer in some types of cells. Recent studies also have shown that Humulus japonicus possesses anti-inflammatory activities and may significantly improve antioxidant potential in Raw 264.7 macrophage cells. Thus, the aim of this study was evaluated the effect of Humulus japonicus extract on sperm motility and subsequent preimplantation developmental competence of the bovine embryos. After in vitro maturation, the oocytes with sperms were exposed in in vitro fertilization (IVF) medium supplemented with Humulus japonicus extract (0.01, 0.05, $0.1{\mu}g/mL$, respectively) for 1 day. In our results, exposure of IVF medium to Humulus japonicus extract did not affect sperm motility and percentage of penetrated oocytes but ROS intensity was significantly decreased by $0.01{\mu}g/mL$ compared with other groups (p< 0.05). Moreover, treatment with $0.01{\mu}g/mL$ of Humulus japonicus extract was higher the frequency of blastocyst formation than the any other groups (p<0.05). Otherwise, treatment with $0.01{\mu}g/mL$ of Humulus japonicus extract not increased the total cell number but reduced apoptotic-positive nuclei number. In conclusion, our results indicate that supplementation of Humulus japonicus extract in IVF medium may have important implications for improving early embryonic development in bovine embryos.

늦 가을철 시비와 적설로 인한 크리핑 벤트그래스의 이듬해 봄철 생육 (Effect of the Late Fall Fertilization and Snow Cover Period on Spring Greenup of Creeping Bentgrass at Following Year)

  • 본 연구는 2007년 늦가을에서 2008년 초봄까지 골프코스 그린에서 스키 슬로프로 전환하기 전, 적설 및 제설 시기를 다르게 실시한 4개 시험구에 메틸렌 유레아(MU), 복합 화학비료(CF), 입상 휴믹산 비료(HM), 동물성 유기질 비료(NS)를 처리하여 늦가을 시비가 이듬해 봄철 bentgrass의 greenup에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 적설 10일전에 MU와 입상 휴믹산 비료인 입상 휴믹산 비료가 이듬해 봄에 전체적으로 가장 빠른 시각적 품질 상태와 녹색도를 보였다. 공시 비료 중 인산($P_2O_5$)함량이 가장 높은 CF는 봄철 뿌리 신장에 가장효과적이어서 골프코스로 전환 시점(4월 3일)에는 뿌리길이가 평균 13.0cm로 측정되었다. 하지만 CF처리 후 바로 적설된 시험구에서 시각적 품질과 녹색 도에서 가장 낮은 결과를 보여 최소 적설 10일 전에 시비하여야 적설에 의해 용해되지 않았던 잔류 비해를 피할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 동물성 유기질 비료의 시비는 적설처리하지 않았던 시험구에서는 잎의 건물 중이 가장 높았으나 무시비구와 봄철 녹색도 및 시각적 품질평가에서 차이를 보이지 않았다. 따라서 골프코스에서 스키슬로프로 전환하기 위한 적설 시기와 골프 코스로의 재 전환을 위한 적절한 늦가을 시비관리 및 제설 시기는 이듬해 봄철 bentgrass의 greenup과 잔디 생육을 위한 중요한 요소로 분석 되었다.

두과목초의 질소고정에 관한 연구 I. 질소시비수준이 라디노 클로버의 질소고정 및 생장에 미치는 영향 (Studies on the Nitrogen Fixation of Legumes I. Effects of nitrogen fertilization level on nitrogen fixation and growth of ladino clover)

  • 방목초지에서 자생하는 라디노 클로버 포복경을 l/5,000a 와그너 포트에 이식하여 온실에서 겨울동안 1일 12시간 조명시키면서 재배하였다. 50일 동안 재배 후 제 1차 수화하였고 20일 후 2차, 그리고 다시 20일 후에 3차 수확을 하였다. 처리로는 질소시비를 2.5kg/10a, 5.0kg/10a, 7.5kg/10a를 이식 및 각 예취후에 시비하였다. 조사항목으로는 생장점, 지상부 수량, 지하부 수량 그리고 엽면적을 측정하였고 그밖에 질소고정량 및 지하부의 조단백질 함량 그리고 예취 후 질소고정능의 경시적 변화를 조사하였다. 그 결과을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 직물체의 생장점, 지상부 그리고 지하부 생산량을 1차. 2차에서는 5kg/10a구가 가장 많았던 반면 3차에서는 2.5kg/10a구에서 제일 좋았으며 7.5kg/10a구는 질소를 계속 시비함에 따라 식물체는 3차시에 고사하였다. 생장점수는 처리간 유의성이 인정되었다. 2. 라디노 클로버의 질소고정은 1회 예취에서 2.5kg/10a구가 가장 우수한 것으로 나타나 그 후 예취 및 질소시비를 계속함에 따라 고정량은 저하하였다. 3. 잎의 조단백질 함량은 뿌리와 포복경의 조단백함량보다 많았으며 제2차 예취시 까지는 질소시비수준을 높임에 따라 조단백질의 함량도 높아지는 경향이었으나 3차 예취시에는 다시 저하하였다. 4.아세틸렌 환원능은 예취 3주후에 최저치를 나타내다가 5주후에 예취전 상태로 회복하였으며 뿌리의 건물중도 같은 경향을 나타내었다.
