The Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) has been developing planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and power systems for combined heat and power (CHP) units. The R&D work includes solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) materials investigation, design and fabrication of single cells and stacks, and kW class SOFC CHP system development. Anode supported cells composed of Ni-YSZ/FL/YSZ/LSCF were enlarged up to $15{\times}15\;cm^2$ and stacks were manufactured using $10{\times}10\;cm^2$ cells and metallic interconnects such as ferritic stainless steel. The first-generation system had a 37-cell stack and an autothermal reformer for use with city gas. The system showed maximum stack power of about $1.3\;kW_{e,DC}$ and was able to recover heat of $0.57{\sim}1.2\;kW_{th}$ depending on loaded current by making hot water. The second-generation system was composed of an improved 48-cell stack and a prereformer (or steam reformer). The thermal management subsystem design including heat exchangers and insulators was also improved. The second-generation system was successfully operated without any external heat source. Under self-sustainable operation conditions, the stack power was about $1.3\;kW_{e,DC}$ with hydrogen and $1.2\;kW_{e,DC}$ with city. The system also recuperated heat of about $1.1\;kW_{th}$ by making hot water. Recently KEPRI manufactured a 2kW class SOFC stack and a system by scaling up the second-generation 1kW system and will develop a 5kW class CHP system by 2010.
A series of heavy section ductile cast iron ingots with the cube length of 250mm were systematically investigated as functions of casting parameters of sand casting. Abnormal graphite formation was specially observed with the variation of Si content and Bi or Sb addition. Effects of chilling during casting and adaptation of riserless system were also examined, and proved to be effective for the prevention of both shrinkage and abnormal graphite such as chunky one. The formation of chunky graphite was effectively prevented by low Si content despite the promotion of pearlite matrix structure. The ferritic matrix was encouraged to form by high Si content and chunky graphite formation was effectively suppressed by the addition of Bi and Sb. Bi addition, however, was not good enough to control the microstructure owing to the sensitive cooling rate dependent inoculation behavior and relative low ability of nodulization. Sb addition, on the other hand, was proved to be effective for the microstructural control and enhancement of various mechanical properties such as strength, elongation, and impact energy. It may be suggested that optimized casting parameters should be applied to produce heavy section ductile cast iron with reliability.
In this study, the influenced of graphite shape on the boriding of cast iron and boride structure was investigated. Gray cast iron, ferritic and pearlitic ductile cast iron were borided at 750,850,900 and $950^{\circ}C$ for 1,3 and 5 hours by powder pack method with the mixture of $B_4C_9\;Na_2B_4O_7$, $KBF_4$ and Shc. The boride layer was consisted of FeB(little), $Fe_2B$ (main) and graphite. Some possibility of the existence of unknown Fe-B-C compound in the boride layer was suggested. And precipitates in the diffusion zone was $Fe_3(B,C)$. The concentration of Si and precipitation of $Fe_3(B,C)$ in the ${\alpha}$ layer raised the hardness of this Zone. The depth and hardness of boride layer increased with the increase of treating temperature and tim. But high temperature (over $950^{\circ}C)$ caused pore at graphite position and long treating time (5hrs) sometimes caused formation of graphite layer beneath the boride layer. So, for the practical application of borided cast iron, treating in short time and at low temperature was recommended. And for ductile cast iron, ferritizing or pearlitizing heat treatment was seemmed to be possible at the same time with boriding. The graphite in the boride layer was deeply concerned with the qualitx and characteristics of the boride layer. And it greatly influenced on the shape of the boride phase, structure of the boride layer. Generally speaking, the existance of graphite restrained the growth of the boride phase. But the boundary between the gsaphite and the matrix acted as the shortcut of boron diffusion. So, for gray cast iron, the graphite layed length-wise led the formation of boride layer.
Mn-Zn ferrite single crystals show some fluctuations in composition along the direction of growth by the conventional Bridgman method. The single crystal with a uniform composition was obtained by maintaining the liquid composition content. For example, two batches of powder were prepared : one is consisted of 52 mol% of $Fe_2O_3$, 30 mol% of MnO, and 18 mol% Zn(Composition A), and the other 53 mol% of $Fe_2O_3$, 28.5 mol% of MnO, and 18.5 mol% ZnO(Composition B). Crack-free single crystals with the uniform composition B were grown in a size of 60mm diameter, 300mm long by melting the pellets of composition A and followed by supplying the composition B as tablets. Initial permeabilities were obtained above 600 at 5 MHz in the region of 30~270 mm along the direction of growth.
The following results were obtained, microstructures and tensile properties in arc brazed joints of DP(dual phase) steel using Cu-5.3wt%Sn insert metal was investigated as function of brazing current. 1) The Fusion Zone was composed of ${\alpha}Fe+{\gamma}Cu$ and Cu23Sn2. The reason for the formation of these solid solutions. Despite, Fe & Cu were impossible to solid solution at room temperature. It's melting & reaction to something of insert metal & Base Metal (DP Steel) by Arc. Brazing Process has faster cooling rate then Cast Process, Supersaturated solid solution at room temperature. 2) The increase Hardness of Fusion Zone was directly proportional to the rise of welding current. Because, ${\alpha}Fe+{\gamma}Cu$ phase (higher hardness than the Cu23Sn2.(104.1Hv < 271.9Hv)) Volume fraction was Growth, due to increasing the amount of base metal melting by High current. 3) The results of tensile shear test by Brazing, All specimens happen to fracture in Fusion Zone. On the other hand, when Brazing Current increasing tend to rise tensile load. but it was very small, about 26-30% of the base metal. 4) The result of fracture analysis, The crack initiate at Triple Point for meet to Upper B.M/Under B.M/Fusion Zone. This Crack propagated to Fusion zone. So ruptured by tensile strength. The Reason to in the fusion zone fracture, Fusion zone by Brazing of hardness (strength) was very lower then the base metal (DP steel). In addition the Fusion Zone's thickness in triple point was thin than the base metal's thickness in triple point.

Japanese low activation terrific steel(JLF) is a good material for the parts of heat exchanger such as blanket and diverter. At first, JLF was developed as a candidate for structural materials in nuclear fusion applications. However, the development of the jointing technique of JLF steel to other materials is important for wide applications of this material to the industry fields. Recently the jointing technologies including diffusion bonding, brazing, roll bonding, explosive bonding and hot iso-static pressing have been studied for the heterogeneous materials of JLF-1 steel(Fe-9Cr-2W-V-Ta) and stainless steel(STS304). Friction welding is one of the most popular welding methods for two different kinds of materials. In this paper, the JLF-1 steel was jointed to SIS304 by friction welding method and the optimal conditions of the friction welding discussed. Acoustic emission was used as a nondestructive technique to evaluate the weld quality in processing.
Overlaid weld metals of austenitic stainless steel in a pressure vessel of power reactor are usually post-weld heated for a long period of time after welding. The PWHT is considered as a kind of sensitizing and it is important to check the soundness of the weld metal after PWHT, especially about the precipitation of carbides. The purpose of this report is to obtain information on the relation between the change of microstructure and Post-Weld Heat Treatment in the overlaid weld metals. Metallurgical aspects of the problem on austenitic stainless steel heated at $625^{\circ}C$, $670^{\circ}C$, $720^{\circ}C$ and $760^{\circ}C$ for 3, 10, 30, 100 and 300 hours have been investigated by means of optical-micrography, micro-hardness measurement, scanning electron microscope and electron-probe micro analysis. From the results obtained, the following conclusions are drawn; 1) The PWHT above $625^{\circ}C$ for a long time causes a diffusion of carbon atoms from low alloy steel into stainless steel, and consequently carbon is highly concentrated at the boundary layer of stainless steel. 2) C in ferritic steel migrated to austenitic steel and carbides precipitated in austenitic steel along fusion line. At higher temperatures, the ferrite grains coarsened in the decarburized zone. 3) In the change of microstructure of stainless steel overlaid weld metal, the width of carbides precipitated zone and decarburized zone increased with increase of PWHT temperature and time. 4) At about $625^{\circ}C$ to $760^{\circ}C$, chromium carbides, mainly $M_{23} C_6$, precipitate very closely in the carburized layer with remarkable hardening. 5) Precipitation of delta ferrite from molten weld metal depends on solidification phenomenon. There was a small of ferrite near the bond in which the local solidification time was short, comparing with after parts of weld metal. Shape and amount of ferrite were not changed by Post-Weld Heat Treatment after solidification.
Recently developed ferritic heat resistance steel, T24 was used to evaluate microstructure characteristics of simulated heat affected zone. Also, correlation between the prior austenite grain size and amount of $M_{23}C_6$ carbide dissolution was discussed. With the increasing of peak temperature, Grain size steadily increased up to $1050^{\circ}C$ and then rapidly increased at $1150^{\circ}C$. Of the peak temperature $950{\sim}1050^{\circ}C$, amounts of $M_{23}C_6$carbide dissolution are low. But Most of $M_{23}C_6$ carbide that is inhibited grain growth were dissolved above $1050^{\circ}C$ and decreased volume fraction of carbide. This indicates that grain growth may be achieved through dissolution of carbide in the base material. As of welding, due to very rapid heating rate, $M_{23}C_6$ carbide exists above equilibrium solution temperature that is $800^{\circ}C$, even at $1050^{\circ}C$. So, It was confirmed that close correlation between carbide dissolution in the base material and grain growth. Calculated grain size has a linear relationship with peak temperature, on the other hand, measured grain size discontinuously increased between $950{\sim}1050^{\circ}C$ and above $1050^{\circ}C$. Grain size of heat affected zone at $1350^{\circ}C$ peak temperature showed maximum 67um and minimum 4um. Also, The number of side showed 3 to 10.

The high-temperature isothermal aging is studied in ultra-supercritical steel, which is attractive to the next generation of power plants. The effects of microstructure on reversible permeability are discussed. Isothermal aging was observed to coarsen the tempered carbide ($Cr_{23}C_6$), generate the intermetallic ($Fe_2W$) phase and grow rapidly during aging. The dislocation density also decreases steeply within lath interior. The dynamic coercivity, measured from the peak position of the reversible permeability profile decreased drastically during the initial 500 h aging period, and was thereafter observed to decrease only slightly. The variation in dynamic coercivity is closely related to the decrease in the number of pinning sites, such as dislocations, fine precipitates and the martensite lath.
