Annually, several construction workers fall ill, are injured, or die due to heat-related exposure. The prevalence of work-related heat illness may rise and become an issue for workers operating in temperate climates, given the increase in frequency and intensity of heatwaves in the US. An increase in temperature negatively impacts physical exertion levels and mental state, thereby increasing the potential of accidents on the job site. To reduce the impact of heat stress on workers, it is critical to develop and implement measures for monitoring physical exertion levels and mental state in hot conditions. For this, limited studies have evaluated the utility of wearable biosensors in measuring physical exertion and mental workload in hot conditions. In addition, most studies focus solely on male participants, with little to no reference to female workers who may be exposed to greater heat stress risk. Therefore, this study aims to develop a process for objective and continuous assessment of worker physical exertion and mental workload using wearable biosensors. Physiological data were collected from eight (four male and four female) participants performing a simulated drilling task at 92oF and about 50% humidity level. After removing signal artifacts from the data using multiple filtering processes, the data was compared to a perceived muscle exertion scale and mental workload scale. Results indicate that biosensors' features can effectively detect the change in worker physical and mental state in hot conditions. Therefore, wearable biosensors provide a feasible and effective opportunity to continuously assess worker physical exertion and mental workload.
The current research intends to analyse the construction process of gender in the biographies of migrant women. Ten autobiographical-narrative interviews with Korean female migrant workers in Germany were conducted and the following conclusions were ascertained through the analysis of Schutze's autobiographical-narrative interview: The genders in their biographies were constructed similar before their marriage, but different after their marriage according to the work-family balanced type and the family centered type. Before their migration the 'process of life' as female high school students and female workers showed that both types had partially deconstructed a sex-segregated gender. The process of life as female migrant workers after their migration showed that both types had partially constructed a sex-neutral gender. The process of life after their marriage exhibited that the former strengthened and strengthens a sex-neutral gender in a double position as female migrant workers and female marriage migrants, but the latter reconstructed a sex-segregated gender again and intensifies this in a process of time. Based on these results, some implications for the social work practice were addressed, which emerged from the understanding on the gender in the biographies of migrant women.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of job-related characteristics on alcohol consumption among female workers. The Data was collected from a sample of 1,000 female workers by a stratified proportional quota sampling method derived from those who were working in Seoul. Drinking behavior pattern includes total amount of pure alcohol consumed during the last month (AC) measured by graduated quantity-frequency. Job-related characteristics (JRC) were measured by job-related stress, work characteristics, and organizational structure including length of working hours, number of times dining out together with workers per year, number of staff to supervise, employment status, occupational category, and proportion of female workers to male counterpart. Confounding variables include sociodemogrphic and socio-cultural attitudes toward alcohol expectancy, subjective norm of drinking, and gender-role attitude. Hierarchical multiple regression models show that the variability of AC was accounted for by some JRC including number of times dining together and employment status, with confounding variables held constant. However, the relationship between AC and JRC varied across occupational categories. Some implications were discussed in terms of health policy for female workers and further study for female drinking behavior.
Objective : World Health Organization and International Labour Organization, in June 8, 1999, requested that working conditions should be reformed ethically right and economically solid for 2.7 billion world labour force. The purpose of this study is to request compensable surgical therapeutic options and to suggest the renewal in cognizance criteria for worker's compensation, especially in spondylolisthesis. Methods : Regarding spondylolisthesis, we obtained data from Korea Labor Welfare Corporation(KLWC). Spinal disease occurrence incidences and medical fees of National Federation of Medical Insurance(NFMI) were analysed. The compensated 122 spinal instrumented cases included 117 male and 5 female patients, aged from 23 to 72 years old(mean : $45{\pm}9.85$). We compared Korean and Foreign Workers Compensation Law. Results : Numbers of herniated nucleus pulpus(78 cases), spinal fractures(34 cases) and dislocations(4 cases) were claimed after spinal interbody fusion operation and were compensated. These compensated degenerative diseases, work related illness, occurred in the course of work. A case of 52-year old spondylolisthesis patient with Disability Grade 8 was compensated by KLWC, according to its occurrence at work by accident. With exception of trauma at work by accident, current cognizance criteria were too narrow to be compensable, especially in surgical therapeutic option, for worker's spondylolisthesis. Conclusion : Considering both worker's compensation law and clinical pathologic progress, we believe that spondylolisthesis should be regarded as a compensable occupation related disease if and when aggravates rapidly in the course of work. We suggest a new cognizance standard to KLWC for labour welfare and proper worker's compensation.
Rapid socio-cultural and economic changes in the country has brought with it changes in the society's value system. For a traditional society that is increasingly being exposed to modernization but where sex norms are still very restrictive, the adolescent sexual mores takes on added significance. Adolescents are caught between two opposing forces, the changing environment that allows for freer and liberal mores and the traditional society that cannot keep pace with the changing environment and therefore demands resistance to changes. This paper focuses on problems of adolescent sexuality in this country and considers the countermeasures for the existing problems. Amongst the problems are: (a) increasingly younger age of the adolescents who start sexual intercourse (b) non-use of contraception, (c) unwanted pregnancies, (d) increase in the number of induced abortion and (e) increase in the number of unwanted children and unmarried mothers. The Korean adolescent's sexual behavior seems to follow that of the developed countries. In other words, many western modes of life and sexual values seem to bave been copied in Korea and yet Korean adolescents lack in their knowledge of sex related matters such as reproductive physiology and contraception. Among middle and high school students, female students are reported to have less knowledge on sex than male students according to a 1988 survey by KIPH. Even among the unmarried famale factory workers, only 42.5 percent replied they know of the condom, and 25.1 percent and 23.1 percent said they had knowledge of spermicide and menstrual regulation respectively. However, 14.9 percent and 13.9 percent reported that they had a knowledge of the loop and female sterilization respectively according to the 1984 study by KIPH. Among the middle school students 0.8 percent said they had experience in sexual intercourse, while 7.3 percent of the high school students reported having had sexual intercourse. The sexual intercourse experience rate among the unmarried female factory workers is 37.8 percent. Among those female factory workers with sexual experience, 46.7 percent had more than one sex partners. Only 39.1 percent of male students and 18.9 percent of female students among those with sexual intercourse experience have used contraceptives. mostly condoms and oral pills 45.1 percent of female factory workers with sexual intercourse experience used contraceptives such as pills, condoms and rhythm methods. The pregnancy experience rate among the female factory workers who had experience in sexual intercourse is 29.5 percent, which is 11.1 percent among the total respondents. Out of the 102 pregnant female workers, 98 workers(96.1 percent) terminated their pregnancy by induced abortion and 2 workders(2 percent) in natural abortion, while 1 worker(1 percent) was in pregnancy and another 1 worker had normal birth that was subsequently sent to orphanage. In order to cope with the problem of adolescent sexuality, a drastic and strong policy measures should be taken by the government. The most effective countermeasure to the adolescent sexual problems appears to the education. The sex and population education in the school is very much in need. In addition, sex education program through mass media and at the job sit-should be promoted for a healthy development of adolescents' sexual behavior. Also, the existing national family planning program, which has focused on the married couples, should be extended to the unmarried people in its scope and contents of the program.
Objectives : Using several waves of the Panel Study of Worker's Compensation Insurance(PSWCI), this study analyzed the effect of female workers on the health and lifestyles of korean workers in the sample year of 2014 (The first survey was completed in August-October 2013;, the second survey was completed in August-October 2014.) Methods : The research subjects were 24,672 women among workers who responded to the 2014 PSWCI panel report. Statistical analyses were performed with SAS version 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA). Results : According to the results of the analysis, women showed differences in female temporary workers, working conditions, classification of occupation, working period, and health conditions based on work-time conditions. The results show that female workers with disabilities have a direct positive effect on life satisfaction as we anticipated in the hypothesis. Conclusions : Female workers should focus on factors identified in this study when developing employment interventions to improve a health promoting lifestyle for their work environment.
The objectives of this study were to verify the determinants of regular exercise behavior in female workers by applying a modified Theory of Planned Behavior. The variables investigated for this study were health status, health concern, health habit, attitude (7 items), subjective norm (3 items), and perceived behavioral control(5 items). Data was collected from 204 female workers using a self-administered questionnaire. The results of this study were as follows. 1) Regular exercise behavior was significantly influenced by perceived behavior control for time, pleasurable attitude, and the subjective norm of their colleagues. 2) A modified Theory of Planned Behavior is particularly useful in explaining exercise behavior of female workers. We suggest that health care providers should focus on not only attitude and social norms but also perceived behavioral control in order to improve the exercise behavior of female workers.
The purposes of this study were to develop a job stress measurement tool and to identify the job stress according to the characteristics of worker and work condition at the small and medium-sized plants. Data were collected through face-to-face survey for April-May, 1997. Subjects were 180 workers at 36 small and medium-sized plants located near Seoul. Data were analyzed by item analysis, factor analysis, and ANOVA. The results were as follow : 1, Number of items of job stress measurement were 33 and Cronbach's $\alpha$ was .9262 except 13 items with low values of Cronbach's coefficient. Factor analysis was done in order for construct validity and 8 factors were extracted and cumulative percent of variance was 65.6%. 2. The job stress scores of male, the younger, 2-shift workers, and over-time workers were significantly higher than those of female, the older, 1-shift workers, and 48 hour workers per week. 3. There were no significant difference between job stress scores and the groups by number of worker, and the types of manufacturing. The stress measurement tool is valid and very reliable to measure worker's stress. Furthermore, the job stress managent program for health promotion of the workers at the vulnerable work condition is needed more and more.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore and understanding the nature of the shift workers' experience in industries requiring 24 hours-a-day service provision and support. For the Purpose, the present researcher made a research Question, "What are workers' experience in the shift work?" Methods: In the study, 5 male shift workers, 3 female shift worker and a woman (key informant) whose husband is a shift worker participated. Then profound interviews with the participants were made after their agreement. Results: The researcher classified the significant statements under 6 theme clusters, 1) sense of difference; 2) worries about health; 3) draining of emotion; 4) anxiety; 5) sadness; and 6) being comfortable. Conclusions: Shift work which is inevitable in modern society may have severe influences on shift workers' physical, mental and psychological aspects by causing their work cycle rhythm to be unbalanced. Finally, the researcher hopes that the results of the study would help understand workers' life and increase social concern and support to the workers.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the effects of psychological need satisfaction in exercise and motivation for exercise on physical activity. Methods: Eighty-five women working in three retail and health service sectors completed self-reported questionnaires during September and November 2018. Data were analyzed using SPSS for Windows 24.0 through descriptive statistics, t-tests, and logistic regression analysis. Results: Logistic regression analysis showed that intrinsic motivation (OR=1.95, 95% CI: 1.10~3.47) and autonomy (OR=1.65, 95% CI: 1.00~2.70) affected female workers' physical activity. Conclusion: To improve physical activity among women working in retail and health service sectors, programs to improve autonomy and intrinsic motivation should be developed and examined.
