Automatic facial expression recognition has many potential applications in different areas of human computer interaction. However, they are not yet fully realized due to the lack of an effective facial feature descriptor. In this paper, we present a new appearance-based feature descriptor, the local directional pattern (LDP), to represent facial geometry and analyze its performance in expression recognition. An LDP feature is obtained by computing the edge response values in 8 directions at each pixel and encoding them into an 8 bit binary number using the relative strength of these edge responses. The LDP descriptor, a distribution of LDP codes within an image or image patch, is used to describe each expression image. The effectiveness of dimensionality reduction techniques, such as principal component analysis and AdaBoost, is also analyzed in terms of computational cost saving and classification accuracy. Two well-known machine learning methods, template matching and support vector machine, are used for classification using the Cohn-Kanade and Japanese female facial expression databases. Better classification accuracy shows the superiority of LDP descriptor against other appearance-based feature descriptors.
A fuzzy weighted mean method on a 2D shape recognition system is introduced in this paper. The bispectrum based on third order cumulant is applied to the contour sequence of each image for the extraction of a feature vector. This bispectral feature vector, which is invariant to shape translation, rotation and scale, represents a 2D planar image. However, to obtain the best performance, it should be considered certain criterion on the calculation of weights for the fuzzy weighted mean method. Therefore, a new method to calculate weights using means by differences of feature values and their variances with the maximum distance from differences of feature values. is developed. In the experiments, the recognition results with fifteen dimensional bispectral feature vectors, which are extracted from 11.808 aircraft images based on eight different styles of reference images, are compared and analyzed.
In this paper a new feature extraction and target classification method is proposed for the recognition part of FLIR(Forwar Looking Infrared)-image-based ATR system. Proposed feature extraction method is "cluster(=set of classes)-based"version of previous fisherfaces method that is known by its robustness to illumination changes in face recognition. Expecially introduced class clustering and cluster-based projection method maximizes the performance of fisherfaces method. Proposed target image classification method is based on the mixture of experts model which consists of RBF-type experts and MLP-type gating networks. Mixture of experts model is well-suited with ATR system because it should recognizee various targets in complexed feature space by variously mixed conditions. In proposed classification method, one expert takes charge of one cluster and the separated structure with experts reduces the complexity of feature space and achieves more accurate local discrimination between classes. Proposed feature extraction and classification method showed distinguished performances in recognition test with customized. FLIR-vehicle-image database. Expecially robustness to pixelwise sensor noise and un-wanted intensity variations was verified by simulation.

This paper proposes an efficient and yet powerful local descriptor called phase-space partition based descriptor (PPD). This descriptor is designed for the mobile image matching and retrieval. PPD, which is inspired from SIFT, also encodes the salient aspects of the image gradient in the neighborhood around an interest point. However, without employing SIFT's smoothed gradient orientation histogram, we apply the region based gradient statistics in phase space to the construction of a feature representation, which allows to reduce much computation requirements. The feature matching experiments demonstrate that PPD achieves favorable performance close to that of SIFT and faster building and matching. We also present results showing that the use of PPD descriptors in a mobile image retrieval application results in a comparable performance to SIFT.

In this paper, we propose a new affine shape adaptation scheme for the affine invariant feature detector, in which the convergence stability is still an opening problem. This paper examines the relation between the integration scale matrix of next iteration and the current second moment matrix and finds that the convergence stability of the method can be improved by adjusting the relation between the two matrices instead of keeping them always proportional as proposed by previous methods. By estimating and updating the shape of the integration kernel and differentiation kernel in each iteration based on the anisotropy of the current second moment matrix, we propose a coarse-to-fine affine shape adaptation scheme which is able to adjust the pace of convergence and enable the process to converge smoothly. The feature matching experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach obtains an improvement in convergence ratio and repeatability compared with the current schemes with relatively fixed integration kernel.
If we want to recognize the human's emotion via the facial image, first of all, we need to extract the emotional features from the facial image by using a feature extraction algorithm. And we need to classify the emotional status by using pattern classification method. The AAM (Active Appearance Model) is a well-known method that can represent a non-rigid object, such as face, facial expression. The Bayesian Network is a probability based classifier that can represent the probabilistic relationships between a set of facial features. In this paper, our approach to facial feature extraction lies in the proposed feature extraction method based on combining AAM with FACS (Facial Action Coding System) for automatically modeling and extracting the facial emotional features. To recognize the facial emotion, we use the DBNs (Dynamic Bayesian Networks) for modeling and understanding the temporal phases of facial expressions in image sequences. The result of emotion recognition can be used to rehabilitate based on biofeedback for emotional disabled.
In this paper, we describe the system to recognize the six digit postal number of mails using neural network. Our zip-code recognition system consists of a preprocessing procedure for the original captured image, a segmentation procedure for separating an address block area with a shape, and recognition procedure for the cognition of a postal number. we extract the feature vectors that are the input of a neural network for the recognition process based on an area optimizing and an image thinning processing. The neural network classifies the zip-code in the mail and the recognized zip-code is verified through the zip-code database.
In this paper, a method is proposed to recognize human actions as nonverbal expression; the proposed method is composed of two steps which are action representation and action recognition. First, MHI(Motion History Image) is used in the action representation step. This method includes segmentation based on depth information and generates spatio-temporal templates to describe actions. Second, CNN(Convolution Neural Network) which includes feature extraction and classification is employed in the action recognition step. It extracts convolution feature vectors and then uses a classifier to recognize actions. The recognition performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by comparing other action recognition methods in experimental results.
The classification and recognition of two-dimensional trademark patterns independently of their position, orientation, size and scale by proposing two feature vectors has been discussed. The paper presents experimentation on two feature vectors showing size- invariance and scale-invariance respectively. Both feature vectors are equally invariant to rotation as well. The feature extraction is based on local as well as global statistics of the image. These feature vectors have appealing mathematical simplicity and are versatile. The results so far have shown the best performance of the developed system based on these unique sets of feature. The goal has been achieved by segmenting the image using connected-component (nearest neighbours) algorithm. Second part of this work considers the possibility of using back propagation neural networks (BPN) for the learning and matching tasks, by simply feeding the feature vectosr. The effectiveness of the proposed feature vectors is tested with various trademarks, not used in learning phase.
