This study tries to infer fault lines and produce a map for the lines based on a classification of fault-related landforms and fluvial landformsin the Gyeongju area of the Yangsan Fault Valley. Fault activities in the study area are thought to be older than the time of river formation or stronger than the erosion by river, while the northern and southern parts of the study area seem to have experienced fault activities after valley formation. It is also possible that weaker fault activities than the erosion by river seem to have been prevailed in the parts. In the study area, the Gyeongju alluvial fan is located within a wide erosional valley at the joint area of the Yangsan and Ulsan Faults. From the distribution of the landforms, it is inferred that several fault lines parallel to the Yangsan Fault are distributed at both sides of the fault valley. In particular, the area from Bae-dong to Nogok-ri, Naenam-myeon shows the most obvious linearity of the landforms within the study area. Several fault lines with a direction of NNE-SSW are also found around the epicenter of the 2016 Gyeongju Earthquake.
Moryang Fault is geomorphologically observed as a linear fault valley from Angang through Moryang, Duckhyun and Wondong to Gimhae, and contacts with Yangsan Fault, being obliquely away to the east, at Angang disrict. The fault valley appears a V-shape feature with a width from 100 to 300 m, and has fragmental zones of the fault along the valley on a small scale. Nine fault-outcrop localities were found along the nine-kilometers valley between Daehyun-ri, Gyeongju, and Baenaemi-gogae, Yangdong-ri, Ulsan. The fault strikes the North-North-East to the Northeast and dips to the Northwest with high angles, and reveals it had been undergone predominantly sinistral reverse fault movement sense, left-lateral and right-lateral strike-slip sense in bedrocks. However, after unconsolidated sediments, there was the top-up-to-the-east dextral reverse fault movement.

Petrological, paleomagnetic, geomorphological and structural studies on the southern part of, so called, Chugaryeong rift valley, have been carried out in order to clarify the nature of the rift valley. Three stages of volcanic activities characterized by Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks and tholeiitic and andesitic basalt of Cretaceous age(?), and Jongok Quaternary olivine basalt occurred along the Dongducheon fault line. Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks distributed in the central part of the studied area consist of rhyodacite, acidic tuff and tuff breccia, which are bounded by Dongsong fault on the east and Daegwangri fault on the west. The Jongok basalt differs from those of Ulrung and Jeju islands in mineralogy, chemical composition and differentiation. Jongok basalt distributed along the Hantan river dilineates the vesicles curved toward downstream direction and increment of numbers and thickness of lava flow toward upstream direction. These facts suggest that lava flowed from upstream side of the river. Rectangular drainage patterns also support the presence of the Dongducheon, Pocheon, Wangsukcheon and Kyonggang faults which were previously known. LANDSAT image, however, does not show any lineaments which could be counted as a graben or rift valley. Displacement of Precambrian quartzite and Jurassic Daedong supergroup along the southwestern extension of the Dongducheon fault shows the right lateral movement. The Paleomagnetic study of the tholeiitic and andesitic basalts from Baegeuri, Jangtanri and Tonghyeonri located at 2. 3km east, 0km east, and 1.5km west of Dongducheon fault respectively shows that their VGP(Virtual Geomagnetic Pole) being to intermediate geomagnetic field of short duration which suggests that they formed in almost same period. Mean VGP of Jongok basalt is located 82.4N and 80.6E. This is in good coincidence with worldwide VGP of Plio-Pleistocene indicating that Jongok basalt was extruded during Plio-Pleistocene epoch, and suggesting that the studied area has been tectonically stable since then. From the present study, the tectonic episode of the region is concluded as following three stages. 1. The 1st period is worked by the Daebo orogeny of Jurassic during which granodiorite was intruded in Precambrian basement. 2. The 2nd period is the time when right lateral strike-slip fault of NNE-SSW direction was formed probably during late Cretaceous to Paleogene and the Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks and the older basalts were extruded. 3. The 3rd period is the time when the fault was rejuvenated during Pliocene or Pleistocene accompanied by the eruption of Jongok basalt. As a conclusion, geologic structure of the studied area is rather fault line valley than graben or rift valley, which is formed by differential erosion along the Dongducheon fault suggesting a continuation of the Sikhote-Alin fault. The volcanic rocks including the Jijangbong acidic rocks, tholeiitic-andesitic basalt and olivine basalt are associated with this fault line.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the fault structures in the Chukaryong Rift Valley. The Rift Valley has very significant meaning to interprete the development of Korean structural landforms. But till now the mechanism and processes of the formation of the Rift Valley are not clearly proved IMAGEM is very useful in this study. IMAGEM is developed by the Electromagnetic Instrument, Inc. and it covers $0.001{\sim}20,000Hz$. Form the fold survey data, it is certain that the faulted structures exist in the two points of the Rift Valley. But the Rift Valley is too long and braod to check the all evidences of the faulted structures.
The dynamic evolution of the Chugaryeong fault valley is studied by paleomagnetic works on 163 samples at 16 sites from Late Cretaceous and Quaternary volcanic rocks in the valley. Conglomerate test and stepwised thermal/alternating field demagnetization indicate that all the characteristic directions are of primary origin. Paleomagnetic pole ponsition(216.8$^{\circ}$E/7l .6$^{\circ}$N; dp=7.1$^{\circ}$, dm=10.0$^{\circ}$) for the upper par of the Jijangbong Volcanic Complex Is indistinguishable from the coeval retference pole position from the Gyeongsang Basin, which further substanciates the reliability of the Paleomagnetic data. This indicates the study area has not undergone any tectonic rotation since Late Cretaceous by uy significant reactivation of the Chugaryeong fault valley. The Quaternary pole position (134.2$^{\circ}$E/86.5$^{\circ}$N; $A_{95}$=7.1 $^{\circ}$) from the Jeongog Basalt reflects the present geocentric axial dipole field for the area, supporting the above conclusion. Unlike the upper part, paleomasnelic directions of the lower part of the Jijangbong Volcanic Complex show random distrinution between sites. We interpret that the early stage of the volcanic activity was created by sinistral strike slip motion of the Chugaryeong fault during early Late Cretaceous. The creation and evolution of the Chugaryeong fault valley emphasize the significance of the kinematic FR (folding ruler) model in east Asia.
Recent earthquakes near nuclear power plants in Korea have triggered public concerns about possible seismicity of the Ulsan Fault Zone in the south-eastern part of the Korean peninsula. To reveal subsurface structures of this fault zone, we conducted high-resolution seismic refraction and reflection surveys, and closely spaced gravity measurements in the Dongchon River valley north of Ulsan, Korea. Here alluvium covers the north-south trending fault zone in a 1-km wide valley. Both source points and receivers were spaced at 5-m intervals for the 24-channel seismic refraction and reflection methods, along two profiles of 835 m and 415 m length. Gravity data were also measured along these profiles at 131 stations using a 10-m interval. Synergetic interpretation of seismic refraction, high-resolution seismic reflection, and gravity surveys across the valley indicates that the Ulsan Fault Zone was formed by apparent north-south strike-slip motions during the Cretaceous, and that some faults may have been reactivated by east-west compressional or transpressional stresses during the Tertiary or Quaternary.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the geomorphological characteristics of middle part of Korea. IMAGEM is developed by the Electromagnetic Instrument, Inc. and it covers $0.001{\sim}20,000Hz.$ Form the field survey data, it is certain that the faulted structures exist in the two points of the Rift Valley. Jeomal Cave consists of limestone. Soil distribution is very different from mountain area to piedmont area. The Cave developed in a part of the fault valley. The joints controls the low level stream orders in the cave. in this area the geological structure is close relate to the underground water flow. It is certain that the distribution of the clay came from the surface.
The Ulsan Fault Zone (UFZ) of NNW trend is developed in the Gyeongsang Basin, the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula, and the Quaternary faults have been found around the UFZ. The faults generally thrust the Bulguksa igneous rocks of Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary upon the Quaternary deposits or are developed within the Quaternary deposits. They mainly show the reverse-slip sense of top-to-the west movement. The lines connecting the their outcrop sites show a zigzag-form which is similar to the orientation of their fault surfaces which show the various trends, like (W)NW, N-S, (E)NE, ENE trends. The E-W trending dextral strike(-slip) fault is found in the Quaternary deposits of the Singye-ri valley. It cuts the N-S trending reverse fault and are cut by the N-S trending thrust fault again. Two types of at least two times of Quaternary tectonic movements related to the formation of neotectonic fault zone in the Singye-ri valley are considered from such the geometric and kinematic characteristics of Quaternary faults. One is the reverse faulting of N-S trend by the E-W directed 1st compression and associated the strike-slip tear faulting of E-W trend, and then the thrust faulting of N-S trend by the E-W directed 2nd compression. The other is the reverse faulting of N-S trend, and then the dextral strike-slip faulting of E-W trend by the NW-SE directed compression, and then the thrust faulting of N-S trend. In this paper is suggested the development history of Singye-ri neotectonic fault zone on the basis of the various orientations of Quaternary fault surfaces around the UFZ, and the zigzag-form connecting line of their outcrop sites, and the compressive arc-shaped lineaments which convex to the west reported recently in the Yangsan Fault Zone.

Yangsan fault in the southeastern part of Korean peninsula has been locally reactivated along a prexisted fault during the late Pleistocene time. Geomorphological evidence of the reactivation is revealed at the northern segment(Yugye-ri, Tosung-ri areas) of the Yangsan fault. The reactivation is distinctively characterized by fault gouge and fracture zone with high frequency in the Yugye-ri area. Obique slip separation of the area is about three meters of the middle terrace. The cumulative vertical displacement is recognized after the formation of the middle terrace. Age of the reactivated faulting is constrained to during the formation of dissected valley deposits. Average vertical slip based on paleo-event is inferred to about 0.5-0.7 meter in this area.
