In this paper an experimental study on the development of the shielded metal are welding(SMAW) optimization technique for the dissimilar materials SS41 and STS304 of Auto-Lifting Magnet core plate was carried out. It was confirmed that the optimum welding heat input range was 37.5 to 45 kj/cm by considering on the strength and fatigue life of the welded joints more than 100% joint efficiency. And the quantitative relationship empirical wquation between the strength toughness adn fatigue life and the weld heat input was obtained.
In this paper, welding pitch optimization technique of vehicle subframe is presented considering the fatigue life of spot welding nuggets. Fatigue life of spot welding nuggets is estimated by using the frequency-domain fatigue analysis technique. The input data, which are used in the fatigue analysis, are obtained by performing the dynamic analysis of vehicle model passing through the Belgian road profile and also the modal frequency response analysis of finite element model of vehicle subframe. According to the fatigue life result obtained from the frequency-domain fatigue analysis, the design points to optimize the weld pitch distance are determined. For obtaining the welding pitch combination to maximize the fatigue life of the spot welding nuggets, 4-factor, 3-level orthogonal array experimental design is used. This study shows that the optimized subframe improves the fatigue life of welding nugget with minimum fatigue life about 65.8 % as compared with the baseline design.

Most of mechanical failures are caused by repeated loadings and therefore they are strongly related to fatigue. To avoid the failures caused by fatigue, determination of an optimal shape of a structure is one of the very important factors in the initial design stage. Shape optimization for three types of specimens, which are very typical ones in opening mode in fracture mechanics, was accomplished by the linear elastic fracture mechanics and the growth-strain method in this study. The linear elastic fracture mechanics was used to estimate stress intensity factors and fatigue lives. And the growth-strain method was used to optimize the shape of the initial shape of the specimens. From the results of the shape optimization, it was concluded that shapes of three types of specimens optimized by the growth-strain method prolong their fatigue lives very much.
In this paper, a versatile multi-objective optimization concept for fatigue life prediction is introduced. Multi-objective decision making in engineering design refers to obtaining a preferred optimal solution in the context of conflicting design objectives. Compromise decision support problems are used to model engineering decisions involving multiple trade-offs. These methods typically rely on a summation of weighted attributes to accomplish trade-offs among competing objectives. This paper gives an interpretation of the decision parameters as governing both the relative importance of the attributes and the degree of compensation between them. The approach utilizes a response surface model, the compromise decision support problem, which is a multi-objective formulation based on goal programming. Examples illustrate the concepts and demonstrate their applicability.

A district heating(DH) system supplies environmentally-friend heat and is appropriate for reduction of energy consumption and/or air pollutions. The objectives of this paper are to systematize data processing of transition temperature, investigate its effects on fatigue life of DH pipes and optimization for size of DH pipes. A relational database management system as well as reliable fatigue life evaluation procedures is established for Korean DH pipes. Also, since the prototypal evaluation results satisfied both cycle-based and stress-based fatigue criteria. Through the optimum design process, the cross section diminished 18.64% and the CUF diminished 23.35%. So, it can be used as useful information in the future for optimal design, operation and energy saving via setting of efficient condition and stabilization of water temperature.

In this paper, the technique to reinforce the durability performance of structure using the sensitivity information for the frame structure is applied. The fatigue life calculation for the frame structure is performed from the quasi-static and transient analysis and the characteristics of two methods are compared for the fatigue analysis. Then the reinforcement technique is applied. First, some design variables related to the locations of fatigue failure is selected. Then sensitivities of fatigue life at fracture points with respect to the variation of design variables are calculated and the vector composed of gaps between the target life and initial life cycles is calculated. If the number of fatigue fracture points is same as the number of design variables, the variations of the design variables are calculated from the linear algebraic equation. If not, the variations of the design variables are calculated from the optimization formulation with the constraints.
The next generation of diesel engine can operate at high injection pressure up to 1,800bar. The common rail pipe must have higher internal strength because it is directly influenced by the high-pressure fuel. Folding defects in the Common rail pipe can not ensure the structural safety. Therefore, Preform design and fatigue-life analysis are very important for preventing the head of the common rail pipe from folding in the heading process and for predicting fatigue life according to the amount of folding. In this study, a closed form equation to predict fatigue life was suggested by Goodman theory and pressure vessels theory in ASME Code in order to develop an optimization technique of the heading process and verified its reliability through fatigue-structural coupled field analysis. The results calculated by the theory were in good agreement with those obtained by the finite element analysis.

Recently, in proportion to increased demand on environmentally-friendly heat source, efficient management of district heating(DH) system becomes one of important issue. The objectives of this paper are to systematize data processing of transition temperature, investigate the effect of temperature variations on thermal fatigue and find out a way to improve design fractures of Korean DH pipes. For this purpose, reliable fatigue lift evaluation procedures are examined and applied to quantify thermal fatigue lives. Also, as a prototypal optimization analysis results, mean value of original cross sectional area of selected pipes was reduced 18.6% sustaining their sufficient margins against fatigue failure. So, it is anticipated that the output of this research can be used as useful information of optimal design and operation in the future.

The objectives of this paper are to develop a finite element analysis model to analyze press-fitted and bending load conditions in a press-fitted assembly, and propose a hub shape optimization method to minimize contact pressure near the shaft contact edge. Numerical asymmetric-axisymmetric finite element models have been developed to predict contact stress on press-fitted shafts. The global optimization method, genetic algorithm, local optimization method, and sequential quadratic programming were applied to a press-fitted assembly to optimize the hub contact edge geometry. The results showed that the maximum contact pressure with the optimized hub shape decreased more than 60 % compared to conventional hubs and the maximum contact stress affecting fatigue life was reduced about 47 %. Hub shape optimization can be useful to increase the load capability of press fits in terms of wear and fatigue behavior.
