The design process for obtaining the reliable steeraxle casting beam of fork lift truck is studied in this paper, as the casting beam is major component of steeraxle which has a steering function at driving. In this study, the driving mode and damage pattern of casting beam which could be occurred from the customer site were analyzed and it established the design process to predict the fatigue life by FEA(Finite Element Analysis) so that the reliability of steeraxle casting beam could be verified at DVT(Design Validation Test) mode. This paper provides guidance on the process of designing the reliable steeraxle casting beam at the initial design stage and also, provides guidance on the process of solving the problem when the failure is occurred in the field.
Objective: This study aims to evaluate visual discomfort and visual fatigue caused by watching HMD and smartphones by conducting both subjective and objective measure. Background: With the rapid development of mobile Head-Mounted Display (HMD), the problem of visual discomfort and visual fatigue caused by watching Virtual Reality (VR) contents became a crucial concern for consumers and manufacturers, especially given that the casing of mobile HMD keeps the phone at a specified distance from the lenses that is close to the eyes. Method: Two smartphones were chosen for a preliminary study: LG G5 and Galaxy S7. As for a main study, iPhone 6S and Galaxy S7 were used. After being exposed to the selected clips, participants were asked to answer Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ) and went through optometric tests that measure tear break-up time, spherical equivalent, and contrast sensitivity. Results: The subjective assessments indicate that HMD causes more visual discomfort compared to watching a smartphone. Furthermore, the experimental result confirms that watching a HMD causes more eye dryness compared to smartphones. Conclusion: The result of the study compared visual discomfort and visual fatigue of two different displays, HMD and smartphone, and confirmed that watching HMD causes more visual discomfort and visual fatigue. Application: Ultimately, this study could help manufacturers understand the strengths and weaknesses of different display forms, providing guidance for an effective application of HMD.
The tower-platform interface and mooring system of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) are some of the most critical components with significant influences on overall project costs. In addition to satisfying strength requirements, it is typical and vital to meet fatigue criteria for a service life of 25 years or more. Wind spectra characteristics considered in analysis can penalize fatigue designs, leading to unnecessary costs. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC, 2009) recommends the use of site-specific wind data (spectrum, turbulence intensity, etc.) in design of FOWTs, but for offshore sites it is often the case that such data is unavailable and land-based data are used as surrogates in design. For such scenarios, it is worth investigating whether such alternative approach is suitable and accurate, and understanding the consequence of the selection of wind spectral characteristics on fatigue design. This paper addresses the impact of the subsequent selection on fatigue responses of towerbase and mooring system in a FOWT, as a sequel to the paper by Udoh and Zou (2018) which focused on impacts on strength design. The 5 MW semi-submersible FOWT platform with six mooring lines implemented in the preceding study is applied in analysis. Results indicate significant variations in resulting fatigue life with considered wind parameters. Thus, it is critical to apply proper wind spectra characteristics for analysis and design of FOWTs to avoid unnecessary conservatism and costs. Based on the findings of this study, more explicit guidance on the application of turbulence intensities for IEC-recommended models in offshore sites could lead to more accurate load estimates in design of FOWTs.
Recent deepwater offshore structures in the Gulf of Mexico utilize butt welded tubular joints. Application of a welded tubular joint includes tendons, production risers, and steel catenary risers. Fatigue life assessment of these joints becomes more critical, as the structures to which they are attached are allowed to undergo cyclic and sometimes large displacements around an anchored position. Estimation of the fatigue behavior of these tubular members in the design stage is generally condrcted by using S-N curves, as specified in the codeds and standards. Applying the stress concentration factor of the welded structure to the S-N approach often results in a very conservative assessment, because the stress field acting on the tubular has a non-uniform distribution through the thickness. Fatigue life analysis using fracture mechanics has been applied in the design of the catenary risers. This technology enables the engineer to establish proper requirements on weld quality and inspection acceptance criteria to assure satisfactory structural integrity during its design life. It also provides guidance on proper design curves and a methodology for accounting for the effects of non-uniform stress distribution through the wall thickness. Still, there is inconsistency when designing tubular joints using a conventional S-N approach and when specifying weld flaw acceptance criteria using fracture mechanics approach. This study developed fatigue curves that are consistent with both the S-N approach and the fracture mechanics approach. Accounting for non-uniform stress distribution and threshold stress intensity factor were key parameters in relating both approaches. A series of S-N curves, generated from the fracture mechanics approach, were compared to the existing S-N curves. For flat plate butt joint, the S-N curve generated from fracture mechanics matches with the IIW class 100 curve when initial crack depth was 0.5 mm (0.02 ). The new curves for tubular joint agree very well with the experimental results. The comparison also indicated the degree of conservatism built into the API X design curve.

In order to develop a high speed train, various conditions have been considered. Fatigue strength assessment by the fluctuation of pressure is an important one. In this study, a numerical simulation has been performed to estimate the fluctuation and frequency of pressure when KHST(Korean High Speed Train)passes through tunnels in the Kyung-Bu high-speed railway. The simulation was based on KHST running the Kyung-Bu high-speed line with the speed of 350km/h and the interval of 10 minute headway. And the tunnel entrance speed was estimated by TPS program. Therefore, the fluctuation and frequency of pressure is expressed in Weibull distribution function in the above running situation. The result in this study would be good guidance to calculate the fatigue life and the index of reliability of body structure. We are going to conduct more study to measure the real value of the pressure of the carbody passing through tunnels, to assess the fatigue reliability and to develop method & procedure for the fatigue reliability design.
Recently, a mesh-size insensitive structural stress definition (structural stress method) is proposed that gives a stress state at weld toe with a relatively large mesh size. The structural stress definition is based on the elementary structural mechanics theory and provides an effective measure of a stress state in front of weld toe. In this study, a fatigue strength assessment for a side shell connection of a container vessel using both the hot spot stress and the Battelle structural stress method was carried out. A consistent approach to compute the extrapolated hot spot stress for design purpose is described and current fatigue guidance is evaluated. Fatigue strength predicted by the two methodologies, e.g. hot spot stress and structural stress approaches, at hot spot locations of a typical ship structure are compared and discussed.
The offshore plants such as FPSO are subjected to combination loading of environmental conditions (swell, wave, wind and current). Therefore the fatigue damage is occurred in the operation time because the units encounter the environmental phenomena and the structural configurations are complicated. This paper is a research for frequency domain fatigue analysis of wide-band random loading focused on accuracy of fatigue damage estimation regarding the proposed methods. We selected ideal bi-modal spectrum. And comparison between time-domain fatigue analysis and frequency-domain fatigue analyses are conducted through the fatigue damage ratio. Fatigue damage ratios according to Vanmarcke's bandwidth parameter are founded for wide-band. Considering safety, we recommend that Jiao-Moan and Tovo-Benasciutti methods are optimal way at the fatigue design for wide-band response. But, it is important that these methods based on frequency-domain unstably change the accuracy according to the material parameter of S-N curve. This study will be background and guidance for the new frequency-domain fatigue analysis development in the future.
