Purpose: This study intends to investigate gender role identity and egalitarianism consciousness among adolescents and to determine the relationship between the two factors. Method: Data were collected from 376 middle and high school students in U City. Tools used were the Korean Sexual Role Identity (Kim, J. H., 2005) and the Gender Egalitarianism Consciousness among Adolescents (Kim, 2002). Data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 for t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: There was no significant difference between boys and girls in sender role identity. Boys' gender role identity was different according to school grade (t=-3.19, p= .00), frequency of mother's hugging (t=-2.28, p= .02) and girls' according to religion (t=-2.24, p= .03) mother's job (F=3.59, p= .02), father's education level (F=3.20, p= .04), mother's education level (F=3.24, p= .04), family harmony (F=7.28, p= .00), and frequency of mother's hugging (t=-2.41. p= .02). There was significant difference in egalitarianism consciousness according to sender (t=-12.70. p= .00) Boys' egalitarianism consciousness was different according to school type (t= .02, p= .00) and father's education level (F=4.97, p= .02), and girls' according to school grade (t=-4.21 p= .00), school type (t=-3.12, p= .00), father's level of education (F=3.78. p= .02), decision maker of important domestic matter (F=4.95, p= .00) and frequency of mother's hugging (t=2.53, p= .01). In Girls, sexual role identity and sender egalitarianism consciousness were significantly correlated with each other (r= .01, p= .04). Conclusion: Through the study, it was found that boys' concern for sexual equality of was remarkably lower than girls. Therefore, it is necessary to offer curriculums for boys and to start social education for parents.
The effects of environmental factors on adolescent’s socialization were examined according to the gender. Data were drawn from 1,412 adolescents. A hypothesized model was tested for male and female students separately by the links among housing, family conflicts, parent-adolescent relationship, family stress, peer relations, mass media, school atmosphere, consumption, consumer socialization, and adolescent’s socialization. There was no difference between male and female students in the predictability of the effects of environmental factors on internal and external socialization. For male students, the internal socialization was directly related to mass media, consumer socialization, peer relations, family stress, mother-adolescent relations, and school atmosphere. The external socialization was directly related to mass media, school atmosphere, consumer socialization, father-adolescent relations, housing, and mother-adolescent relations. For female students, the internal socialization was directly related to mass media, peer relations, father-adolescent relations, and consumer socialization. The external socialization was directly related to mass media, followed by consumer socialization, mother-adolescent relations, school atmosphere, housing, and peer relations. The findings are consistent with a growing body of literature showing that the environmental factors are related to male & female adolescent’s socialization.
The purposes of this study are to investigate the parents' communication behavior with their teen-aged child and the effects of the demographic and socio variables on it concerning with the parent education. A sample of 599 teen-aged children was obtained from the elementary, middle and high schools in the city of Seoul. Mean, t-test and F-test were used for data analysis. The major findings can be summurized as follows : The scores of parents' communication behavior are neither high nor low, namely, are not especially desirable. And there are differences in communication behavior by mother's age and schooling, differences in mother's communication behavior by father's age, schooling and occupation, differences in mother's communication behavior by child' sex and age. According to the above findings, it is necessary for all parents with teen-aged children to have the parental communication education, particularly for father with the older child.
The purpose of this study was to examine the peer acceptance of children as a function of children's behavioral traits, mother- and father- child attachment and family-related variables. The sample was consisted of 224 5th grade children from elementary school in Kwang-ju. Data were gathered through questionnaires of peer acceptance, behavioral assessment, mother- and father-child attachment, and family- related variable. The results show that the children's behavioral traits, mother-child attachment, and the sibling's being has the significant differences on the peer acceptance of children. Among these variables, prosocial behavior was the most significnat variable.
The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean youth's motivations for parenthood and concepts of parental role and to examine closely the relationship with the sociodemographic variables(age, sex, religious orientation, growth region, father's occupational level, parental education degree). the subjects are 465 students of the three universities in National Capital region. The data are collected by questionnair methods and analyzed by t-test, F-test, factor analysis. The major findings are as follows: 1) The motivations for parenthood are classified into five factors. These are acquisition of social status factor, continuation of self factor, achevement and creativity factor, tradition factor, primary group ties factor. The korean youth think the most of achievement and creativity factor among five motivation factors. 2) The korean students have somewhat stereo-typed concepts of parental role and place the stress on training the behaviors of the child and encouraging the development of the child. 3) The sociodemographic variables to have relationship with the motivations for parenthood are age, sex, growth region and father and mother's educational degrees. And the variables related with the concepts of parental role are sex, father's occupational level. 4) There are relationships between traditional role concepts of a father and motivation of acquisition of social status factor and tradition factor. And traditional role concepts of a mother are related with motivations of acquisition of social status factor and primary group ties factor among the motivations for parenthood.
This study investigates the infant's cognitive and motor development, mother's parenting knowledge, and father's participation of child-rearing according to demographic variables and child-care related variables. A total of 112 infants aged from 11.5 months to 12.5 months old were tested by Korean Bayley Scales of Infant Development II; in addition, their mothers participated in the survey. The major results were as follows: First, among five areas of parenting knowledge, mothers attained the highest score on socio-emotional development and the lowest on cognitive and language development. Second, fathers participation in child-rearing were related to their income and the time to start child-care center. Third, the development of infants were positively associated with the father's participation in child-rearing. The implications for designing child-care policy and parent education program were discussed.

This study analyzed whether differences in individual characteristics and parental attachment affect the career maturity of middle school students in grades 1-3 in Asan, South Korea. Individual characteristics included gender, grade, grades, parental education, and economic level, while parental attachment included mutual trust, alienation, and communication. Career maturity included determinism, objectivity, readiness, independence, and assurance. Results showed there were significant differences in gender, grades, and economic level. Only gender differences affected attachment to mothers, with female students exhibiting stronger effects than male students. Grades that both the father and the mother showed differences. The economic level differed only in father's attachment. The effects of parental attachment on career maturity were found to be higher in career maturity with lower father's alienation and higher mother's mutual trust. Career maturity did not affect the assurance variable. Mother's communication affected determinism and mutual trust affected objectivity. Father's mutual trust and mother's communication affected readiness, and father's alienation showed a negative relationship. Mother's mutual trust positively affected independence. These results may be a valuable reference for understanding the behavioral psychology of adolescents and their parents. However, there is a limit to the generalizability of this study.
The purpose of this study was to find out the correlations between mother-adolescent communication and quality of life in the adolescents. The study subjects consisted of 171 adolescents who were going to middle school and high school. The data included general characteristics, health related characteristics, stress, mother-adolescent communication and quality of life. The data were analyzed by frequency, mean, percentage, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation using the SPSS statistical program. The result were as follows: 1. The mean score for the stress of adolescent was 2.48(maximum score: 5) and there were significant difference according to demographic variables that is sex, grade, father's being and health related variables that is health status, frequently ill, illness severity and illness of family. 2. The mean score for the mother-adolescent communication was 3.27(maximum score : 5) and there were significant difference according to demographic variables that is father's and mother's being. There were no significant difference according to any health related variables. 3. The mean score for the quality of life of adolescent was 3.97(maximum score : 7) and there were no significant difference according to demographic and health related variables. 4. There was a negative correlation between the stress and the quality of life. There was a positive correlation between the quality of life and the mother-adolescent communication. There was a no correlation between the mother-adolescent communication and the quality of life. Consequently, the implication for nursing of this study is that there is a need to develop relief strategy of stress for the female adolescents. And there is a need to develop a promoting program of quality of life for the adolescents considering the stress and the mother-adolescent communication.
This reach is to comprehend the trend of father-related studies in Korea. The result of analyzing 161 father related thesis published from first issue until 2015.12 issue on 9 journals came out as below. First, father-thesis have increased. But the proportion of it remains for only 1~2% out of total 9 academic journals. Also the increased amount is very small considering the increasing rate of mother-thesis. In other words, the increased number of father-thesis is due to increased number of total amount of academic journals, which cannot be interpreted as the academic interest about fathering has grown. Second, almost of father-thesis were the empirical research and quantitative approach took the most part. Also father-thesis focus on 'what father's role is' and 'how much he does it'. Due to generalization of double-income family and an increase of interest about fathering, operational definition and a measurement issue is growing. Third, the topic of research which handles influence of father to child ranges from social relationship to social and emotional development. Also an interest of awarness development is growing. Meanwhile, research of father's influence to child development depends on cross-sectional data. Only few used vertical material.
Breastfeeding is an excellent way of feeding infants and continues to be an important source of nutrition and antibodies for infants. Although breast-feeding is believed to be important, the rate of breastfeeding among Korean women is very low. One reason for the low breastfeeding rate is that the health professionals in the past have given little practical help couples to overcome difficulties encountered during breastfeeding. The promotion of breastfeeding has recently become a high priority among health professionals because of the undisputed physiological, psychological, social, economic, and nutritional benefits. Fathers have been found to influence the course of breastfeeding, but no one has conducted a systematic investigation into in and included fathers perspectives of breastfeeding in Korea. It is important to find strategies to solve the problems by assessing the knowledge, attitude and practice of breastfeeding with fathers as well as mothers. The purpose of this research is to find ways to promote primiparous(first child) couples's breastfeeding by assessing their general knowledge, attitude and practice of it. More specifically its purposes is to identify the relationship between knowledge, attitude, practice and the background factors of breastfeeding of primiparous couples in order to promote and support breastfeeding. The data will help health professionals to guide first-pregnancy couples to prepare and overcome any difficulties encountered during breastfeeding. Data were collected through a questionnaire which included both structured and open-ended questions. The questionnaire was composed referencing earlier literature, studies and surveys. This survey was made postpartum 2-3days after childbirth on 96 couples. The numbers of subjects for data analysis were selected 51 couples through pilot screening test. Data were coded and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences : Cronbach's alpha coefficient, T-test, ANOVA, Stepwise pearson's correlation coefficient. The relations between the variables of breastfeeding were examined using a Pearson's correlation coefficient. This study showed that, the internal validity of the instrument was tested by Cronbach's alpha. The result was : mother knowledge 0.72, mother attitude 0.88, and father knowledge 0.70, father attitude 0.92, practice 0.76 and planning of breast feeding 0.95. The average age of mothers in the sample was 28.9 years old, and the average age of fathers in the sample was 31.3 years old. The other descriptive informations available included. the study also found that fathers were more important than doctors or nurses. However results of the study indicate that there were no differences between father and mother knowledge of breastfeeding(t=-0.39, p=0.698), and father attitude was statistically significant higher than mother attitude of breastfeeding (t=2.24, p=0.030). In analysis, the variable 'practice' with breastfeeding was the relationship with mother knowledge (p=0.031) and mother attitude(p=0.015). In this study, the correlation between one couple' knowledge and attitude was not significant. Primiparous couples surveyed in the postpartum period regarding knowledge, attitude and practice about breastfeeding might be affected by recall bias, the effects of the euphoria of the first 24-48 hours postpartum, but these variables were not examined. This study results add to the body of knowledge about nursing care for breastfeeding mothers and fathers. This indicates that a need for education about breastfeeding and, that fathers be included in it as well as mothers.
