Types of Parenting of Fathers during Early Childhood: A Q Methodological Approach

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine types of parenting among fathers. The characteristics of parenting each type in early childhood were identified by systematically analyzing and classifying father's perceptions of parenting using the Q-methodology, which places importance on the perspective of the performer. Methods: The Q-method, which is effective for measuring individual subjectivity was used. The subjects in this study were 50 fathers with young children (2~36 months). Results: Four parenting types were identified analyzing the subjective perceptions of fathers with young children about parenting. One type was centered on character development. Another was centered on social development. A third was centered on physical health and development. The fourth was centered on building values. Conclusion: Parenting education programs should be developed based on type-specific characteristics and further research should investigate the effects of father's parenting type.

Young Children's Basic Habits Development by Parents' Recognition about the Importance of Basic Habits and Parenting Styles (기본생활습관의 중요성에 대한 부모의 인식 및 양육태도에 따른 유아의 기본생활습관 형성)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the differences of children's basic habits formation by their mother's and father's parenting style and their recognition about the importance of basic habits. The participants of this study were 160 three and four-year-old children's parents. The results of this study are as follows. The parental features on children's basic habits formation were significant different by children's sex. Girls' basic habits were significant different by their mother's and father's recognition about the importance of basic habits. On the other hand, boy's basic habits were significant different by mother's and father's affectionate parenting and their recognition about the importance of basic habits. Especially, boys whose parents did not consider important their children's basic habits formed higher level of basic habits in case that their mothers showed affectionate parenting. Also, there are no significant differences in children's basic habits by autonomous parenting.

Gender-Egalitarianism in Middle School Students (중학생의 남녀평등의식수준)

  • Purpose : In an attempt to analyse gender-egalitarianism related to the general characteristics, sexual consciousness and behavior in middle school students, this study was carried out. This study will provide data that can be used to develop sexuality education programs on the basis of gender-egalitarianism. Method : The subjects were 141 students (70 boys and 71 girls) in 4 classes that were randomly selected from among 8 classes of first graders in a coeducational middle school, in Seoul. For the evaluation of gender-egalitarianism, a Gender Egalitarianism Scale modified by the researcher was used. Results : Major findings were as follows: 1. Gender-egalitarianism was significantly higher in girls compared with boys. All of the boys and girls, had high gender-egalitarianism in the aspect of woman's ability in groups without sexual discrimination, but low gender-egalitarianism in woman's sexual conversation and style of dress. 2. Gender-egalitarianism in boys who had experienced intersexual physical contact, categorized as holding hands, embracing, kissing, and petting, was significantly higher when compared with inexperienced boys. 3. Gender-egalitarianism significantly increased as the father's education level increased as well as the father's open-mindedness. Factors influencing gender-egalitarianism was social acceptance, the mass media, the attitudes of the school teachers, and the attitudes of older and younger student in school. Conclusions : Based on these results, boys' gender-egalitarianism was lower than that of girls. Systematic education on gender-egalitarianism, combined with sexuality education, is necessary for middle school students, especially boys. In the long term, social acceptable the, mass media, school and home life should be changed for the achievement of the equality of the sexes.

The Effects of Personal Psychological Variables, Family Variables, and Job Satisfaction on the Psychological Well-being of Middle-aged Men (중년기 남성의 개인내적 변인, 가족 변인 및 직무만족이 심리적 안녕감에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of personal psychological variables(cognitive flexibility, emotion dysregulation, subjective health condition), family variables(marital satisfaction, father-adolescent communication) and job satisfaction on the psychological well-being of middle-aged men. For this research, questionnaires were administered to 550 middle-aged men residing in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon. Among 352 questionnaires collected, 327 were selected and statistically analyzed by average, standard deviation, frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS Win 21.0. The main results of the study are as follows: First, according to middle-aged men's social-demographic variables, the level of their psychological well-being differed significantly. Second, cognitive flexibility was the most significant predictor of their psychological well-being. In addition, emotion dysregulation, job satisfaction, father-adolescent communication, and subjective health condition were significant predictors. These results suggest that cognitive reconstruction training or problem-solving intervention could be useful for the psychological well-being of middle-aged men.

Androgynous Equalitarianism of Parents Recognized by Adolescents and Educational Support for Children (청소년이 지각한 부모의 양성평등의식과 자녀교육지원)

  • The purpose of the research lies in investigating how the androgynous equalitarianism of parents recognized by adolescents and educational support for children differ in accordance with social and population factors. The subjects were 397 adolescents of secondary schools in Chonnam. The analysis of the results was carried out using SPSS/WIN 10.0 program. The results were as follows: (1) Adolescents were found to recognize the androgynous equalitarianism in their parents differently in accordance with gender, birth ranking, academic record, and father education level. (2) Educational support of parents recognized by adolescents, showed some notable differences in accordance with type of school, birth ranking, academic record, place of residence, mother's age, father education level, form of marriage, and economic class. (3) The relationship between androgynous equalitarianism and Educational support of parents recognized by adolescents had a positive correlation. In conclusion, it is essential to provide an atmosphere wherein the budding children can display their utmost potentiality regardless of gender to grow independent way of thinking and behaving and ability. Also consistent willingness to practice education in androgynous equalitarianism for the realization of equal society for both men and women is believed prerequisite.

A Study on the Effects of Youth Home Environment on Violent Behavior and Suicidal Thoughts (청소년 가정환경요인이 폭력행동과 자살생각에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • This study examined the effects of the youth home environment on violent behavior and suicidal thoughts. The survey was conducted from March 5, 2014 to July 02 on a juvenile male and female target group of 430 people subjects. Frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted using SPSS Win 18.0 with verification at the 5% significant level. The results of the study were as follows: First, the support of the father had a negative influence on violent behavior. Second, the support of both the father and mother, communication with the father and mother, and the mother's parenting attitude have a negative influence on suicidal thoughts. Third, the youth's violent behavior has a positive influence on the suicidal thoughts. This study provides essential data for making polices to resolve the youth crisis behaviors.

A Study on Influences of Parental Science Attitudes and Trust Perceived by Children on Their Science Self-Efficacy (아동이 지각한 부모의 과학태도와 신뢰도가 아동의 과학 자기효능감에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aimed to explore influences of parental science attitudes and trust perceived by children on their science self-efficacy. In oder to accomplish this purpose, a quantitative research was carried out for elementary gifted and general students using correlation and multiple linear regression analysis. The results were as follows. Firstly, children's science self-efficacy was positively correlated with parental science attitudes and trust perceived by both gifted and general children. Secondly, in the case of gifted children, their science self-efficacy was meaningfully affected by mother's trust, mother's science attitudes, and father's science attitudes perceived by them in that order. On the order hand, general children's science self-efficacy meaningfully affected by mother's trust and mother's science attitudes perceived by them.

Relationships Parent-child Relationships and Psychological Well-being with Eating Attitude of Female Adolescents (여자청소년들의 부모자녀관계와 심리적 복지 및 섭식태도의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between female adolescents's relationships with their parents, psychological well-being, and attitudes towards eating. General characteristics of the subjects such as their school grades, and religion, and their parents' level of educational, marital status, and income were also analyzed in relation with the three major variables. Female adolescents' psychological well-being consisted of two indices: self-esteem and depression. The sample of this study consisted of 419 female students from 4 middle schools and 2 high schools located in Jeollabuk-Do province and the data were collected by using the method of self-administered questionnaires. The results of the analyses showed that there were significant differences in the level of parental attachment across parents' marital status, father's education level, and family income. Participants' psychological well-being levels were also different according to their grades, parents' marital status, and father's education level and income; and the level of eating attitude was different according to their school grades. The correlation analyses results indicated that parental attachment was positively related to self-esteem but negatively to a depressive mood. In addition, female students' eating attitudes were negatively associated with parental attachment and self-esteem, but positively with a depressive mood. Finally, multiple regression analysis found that a negative eating attitude was strongly influenced by a depressive mood, while parental attachment seemed to influence eating attitude indirectly through a depressive mood.

Sexual Knowledge and Attitude in Middle School Students (중학생의 성 지식과 성태도)

  • With the improvement of nutritive conditions and the influence of abundant information as well as various cultural aspects imported from foreign countries, puberty develops more rapidly in the body today. This study was conducted to suggest some ideas that are useful in planning sexual education programs in middle schools with ultimate aim being to promote sexual health. The subject of this survey consisted of 534 fifth graders from 4 schools in Hongchon. The major findings are summarized as follows: 1. The degree of sexual knowledge of adolescents showed a low average 31.00 and the degree of sexual attitude showed an average of 62.0. 2. With respect to demographic characteristics, there were statistically significant differences in sexual knowledge according to the following: living with parents (t=5.913. p=.015), father's education(F=3.213, p=.041), economic status (F=5.073 p= .007); and in sexual attitudes. there were statistically significant differences according to father's education (F=3.912. p = .002), and interest in the other sex (F=3.292, p=.038). 3. The level of sexual knowledge and sexual attitude of adolescents was correlated at significant levels(r= .354. p= .000). The findings of this study indicated that a variety of systematic sexual education programs suitable for each stage of adolescence should be developed along with family, society, and the country's higher concern and enlightenment.

Impact of Travel Experience on Employee's Happiness and Motivations to Work (성인자녀가 지각하는 부모양육태도가 결혼가치관 및 결혼이미지에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to examine the effect of parenting attitude perceived by adult children on marriage values and marriage image. For this purpose, online and face-to-face surveys were conducted for 411 unmarried men and women in their 20~30s living in the Daegu, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do areas. The SPSS 25.0 program was used for analysis and the results are as follows. First, in the general characteristics of the study subjects, there was a significant difference in marriage values according to gender, age, marriage type of parents, religion, and birth order, but no significance found according to education and occupation, family members living together, monthly average household income, or education of parents. Also, marriage image showed significant difference based on gender, marriage type of parents, and marriage intention. Second, the parenting attitude perceived by adult children confirmed that the lower the father's rejective parenting attitude and the higher the mother's acceptive parenting attitude, the more stable the value of marriage was and that the effect of parenting attitude on marriage image confirmed that the lower the father's rejective parenting attitude, the better the marriage image.
