Aesthetic Characteristics of Graphic Factor in Contemporary Fashion Design Categorized by Media Source -Focusing on Play-Instinct Visual Expression- (현대 패션 디자인의 그래픽 요소에 나타난 매개 소스별 미적 특성 -유희본능적 시각 표현을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose for this paper is to categorize and analyze the aesthetic characteristics of graphic factors in contemporary fashion design by media source. Focused on play-instinct visual expression in contemporary fashion design and adopted media source following the way of communication design. A variety of literatures and online sites for graphic factors in contemporary fashion was studied. The standard of media source is classified as graphic media-source: photography media-source, typography media-source, illustration media-source. With this standard, expressed ways are as followings. First, graphic media-source in play-instinct expressional fashion design is mostly borrowing existed character or using designer's brand logo. Second, photography media-source in play-instinct expressional fashion design is placed photograph of social issued people in front of shirt. Third, typography media-source in play-instinct expressional contemporary fashion design is mostly expressed social messages or designer's name in brand. Fourth, illustration media-source is the best way to express play-instinct visual expression. Based on these, aesthetic characteristics of graphic factor in contemporary fashion by media source are classified as three: social words, playfulness and information transference. Frequency ratio using media source per aesthetic characteristics is different and these are able to categorize expression way and image feature. In conclusion, expressional way of graphic factors in contemporary fashion design became diverse as social and cultural changing. Frequency of graphic factor use in contemporary fashion is increased than before. This paper suggested that fashion design is one of the way of communicating with people and should be analyzed graphic factors in contemporary fashion design.

A Study on Fashion Design Applying the Principle of Considerate Design (배려디자인의 원리를 적용한 패션디자인 연구)

  • Considerate design enhances the familiarity, consideration and design accessibility of various customers. The aim of this study lies on analyzing the aesthetic characteristics and instrumental characteristics of fashion design and applying the considerate design principles. The fashion photograph collection that applies the considerate design principle, was collected from 2006 S/S to 2011 F/W through the following internet site: www. style. com. First, the considerate design key words used in the preceding studies and literatures were classified semantically into these words: "Supportiveness", "Variability", "Ease", "Protection". The result shows that considerate fashion design has used simple, comfortable and achromatic, squared silhouettes that are not affected by the changing trend, simple color coordination and hard materials to prolong the product and the plain pattern. By analyzing the instrumental characteristics of considerate fashion design according to the principles, designs of "Supportiveness" purposely used many changes and showed reversible ways the most. Designs of "Variability" used design changes in length, volume, detail, and other changing forms. Designs of "Ease" used easy-wear apparel, ties and pleats. Designs of "Protection" partially used coverings and different combinations.

  • Modern society attaches great important to state of the technology, but, unconscious desire and subconscious are also discussed in an important value. In the social background of such madness is acting as an artistic inspirational to the many people. At such a time, fashion photographs also being used medium which speak for people's desire. Editorial fashion photographs with unusual stories or including experimental visual elements unlike fashion advertising have increasing. The subject of this study is the formative characteristics in recognition of madness from ancient times until now and find out new meaning of the unusual and informal form of editorial fashion photographs showed in Vogue Italia since 2000. The analysis data of this study, we used 36 photographs of editorial fashion photographs taken by Steven Meisel, Tim Walker and Miles Aldriege. The final process of analysis made in with agreement of 10 major people. We used photograph's basic visual elements as analysis to avoid arbitrary interpretations. The content of this study is drawing in editorial fashion photographs from the viewpoint of Michael Foucault's Madness theory, Deleuze and Felix Guattari's Madness as the aspects of desire. The madness images in the editorial fashion photographs were showed as Decadence, Blindness, Violence and Grotesque based on the analysis results from above. The formative characteristics of editorial fashion photographs enabled the awareness on the value and importance of madness in modern society. These editorial fashion photographs can be the source of our wider perspectives for changing recognition of madness.

The Change of Korean Men's Fashion from the 1960s to the 1990s - A Study Based on the Content Analysis of Magazine Advertisements and Pictorials -

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes of modern Korean men's fashion from the 1960s to the 1990s by reviewing fashion magazine advertisements and pictorials. For theoretical study, the characteristics and the importance of apparel advertisements and the changes of modern Korean men's fashion trend were reviewed. On the basis of the theoretical investigation, this study analyzed 932 pictorials from Joongang Magazine, Shin Dong-A, Bokjangwolbo, Meot, Men's Life, WWD, and S.F.F.A's photograph album, published from 1962 to 1998. Content analysis method was used to analyze the content of magazines and pictorials. The 932 samples are classified into apparel types, silhouette, pattern, color, type of breasts, shape of collar, number of button, type of inner wear. Frequency and $x^2$-test were conducted using a SAS statistics package to analyse the data. The results were as follows. The two-piece style prevailed in men's wear during the 60s, 70s, and 90s, while separate style prevailed during the 80s. H silhouette was the most popular during the 60s, 70s and 90s, however, X silhouette dominated the 70s. For patterns, solids were most frequently used throughout the whole 4 decades. In colors, gray was most frequently used during the 60s, and multi color was most frequently used during the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Throughout the whole decades, single breast, tailored collar, two buttons, and dress shirts were the most prevalent styles.

  • Computer Graphic design was developed for printed media and its way of expression has been progressed di\ulcornerversely. Especially, the practices of computer graphic are used in textile design enterprise. The use of computer graphics in courses of textile design was produced by various si$$\mu$ations of colors, size and shape in patterns. Then the completed textile was presented as photograph. This paper describes patterns of two dimensions, cloths of three dimensions in use of softwares-TIPS, LUMENCE, FREE STYLE andTOPAS. As mentioned above, we can design fashion with easy by using computer graphics.

A Study on Play in Contemporary Fashion Photographs (현대 패션 사진에 나타난 유희성에 관한 연구)

  • The aim of this study was to gain an understanding of the element playfulness in fashion photographs related to openness and multiple significance in contemporary art. A total of 105 fashion photographs from US and UK Vogue magazine editorials and advertisements for the last five years were selected for the study. The photographs were analyzed in two main categories - the contextual element of themes, and the elements of visual expression; composition, models, objects and editing technology. The element of playfulness in the photographs were found to be divided into themes of infantile fantasy, social satire and situational dissonance, and elements of visual expression were found to express image distortion, expansion, exaggeration, reduction, and optical illusions. A photography type termed as infantile fantasy and social satire have descriptive characteristics and usually deliver the message by using models and objects to present a certain situation or express social satirical viewpoint and reflective attitude by using objects and photographic skills. A photography type termed as situational dissonance is characterized by immediately understood expressions and usually clarify the message by using a photographic technology such as editing the printed image or expect the model to express an exaggerated poses and ridiculous expressions, causing an optical illusion. Visually expressed and composed scene using composition, models, objects and editing technology is a specific character of photograph and due to the advances in computer editing technology it has been able to express the various playfulness.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore that what is the consideration when using photographs as data sources for historic costume research. So in other to achieve the study, first of all, I have to think over about the new media, photography, and then review the articles and studies how they have been used by scholars outside or our field. The considerations are the followings: 1. What kind of information can be found in historic photographs? The kind of information that may only be found in historic photographs and not in any other data source. What types of photographs are there; how the information varies by type of photograph. 2. What photographs can provide as data sources? How photographs can be used quantitative versus qualitative information; how to collect this information from one or more photographs, the criteria for the use of photographs. 3. Limitations of using historic photographs and what kind of information cannot be found in historic photographs. Be sure to discuss investigating the reliability of assigned dates;the importance of and suggestions on how could be done as part of the criterial for use of photographs. So, by asking and understanding these questions, we will use photographs better as a visual resource forward.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze protection functionality of supermodern fashion which is shown by responding to supermodern environment, where non-spaces increases in the 21st modern city. The theoretical background is drawn for supermodern environment theory. For the study, he researcher used existing study and specialized book and analyzed photograph materials by selecting them in specialized fashion book, internet site and designer's collection. The works from 1995 S/S collection to 2008 S/S collection are analyzed. The result of this study is as follow. First, supermodern design is adopting the shape of high-functional element, electronic device, protective device to protect wearer in non-space. Second, in order to mentally protect individual anonymous leadership of interaction is granted by adopting hood, veil or mask. Third, supermodern design is creating independent and user-based space by shape transformation in change of urban environment. Fourth, in order to protect wearer through camouflage or concealment, camouflage pattern or neutral color are used.

Analysis of BTS Images From Peirce's Semiotic Perspective (퍼스의 기호학적 관점에서의 BTS 이미지 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analysis BTS's image based on Peirce's semiotics. Methodologies of this study are literature study to analyze the structure of idol image based on Peirce's theory of signs, case study and FGI analyzing the semiotic characteristics of BTS images. The research results of analyzing the semiotic features of BTS images by period of the BTS album are as follows. First, in the early days of their debut, they emphasized the image of hip-hop and expressed their will to resist and rebel against the older generation with a challenging and strong image. Second, during the 'The most beautiful day of life' period, image of wandering, rebellion, growth, and youth of teenagers was expressed. Third, in the 'Love Yourself' period, BTS showed various image changes between natural and pure image to splendid image by expressing the process of finding confidence during chaotic moment of growing. Fourth, during the 'Map of the Soul' period, the exploration and reflection on themselves were expressed in an outwardly splendid and bright manner, while at the same time expressing the inner darkness in a contrasting manner. Fifth, in the 'pandemic period', they expressed hopeful energy and willness with the image of mature and attractive man and bright and casual image. Their growth and change have been directly linked to the change of their image, and their image showed a successful signification with complementary combination of icons, indexes, and symbols.

A study on the Moaning of Appropriation Inherited in the Modern Costumes (현대 복식에 내재된 Appropriation의 의미 연구)

  • This study was to analyse the meanings of the appropriation inherited in the modern costumes from the latter of the 20th century to the present. According to the dictionary, the meanings of a word. "appropriation" is to steal something, used in order to avoid saying this directly. The sorts of the appropriation represented in the works of Art was as follow : First. the reconstruction by the imitation of the works of a great master or partly induction of the works of a great master Second, the introduction by the history, modern art, the image of popular culture Third, the imitation by the works of photograph, etc The appropriation in the modern costumes could be distinguished as two facts : First, the appropriation of the image of popular culture, 1) the way by the induction of popular factors of the extremely routine, commonplace character 2) the way by the citation of critical sentence of society, complaint message of the situation of times. Second, the reinterpretation of the past works : 1) the way by the reinterpretation of a great artist′s works, or popular works. In accordance with its change of a standard of value of the beauty, the products of modern culture, called the artificial second image, that is, popular factor, ready made factor, a signboard, a trademark etc, was appropriated in modern costumes and was reinterpreted by the works of fashion designer′s empathy. We can say that the modern costumes is not only the products of creative, original action of fashion designers but also the mirror of times, having relationship with society.
