Our results indicate that brand history, congruity between COB and COM, and conspicuous consumption had significant effect on the fashion brand preference of consumers. Furthermore, presenting the brand history resulted in higher brand preference. Second, the brand history and conspicuous consumption had a significant interaction effect on brand preference. Consumers with higher conspicuous consumption showed significantly higher brand preference than those with lower conspicuous consumption. • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether customers' fashion involvement, brand familiarity, and expertise of negative information moderate the influence of the original brand attitudes on the attitude toward extended brand attitudes in the fashion market. For these purposes, four hypotheses were developed and data was collected from 480 students. Data was analyzed using SPSS methods such as factor analysis, frequency, 1-test, and moderated regression analysis. The results were as follows; first, it was found that the original brand attitudes positively influence the extended brand attitudes. Second, the influence of the original brand attitudes on the extended brand attitudes was stronger when fashion involvement was high rather than low. Third, in the case that perceived similarity between the original and the extended product classes was high, the influence of the original brand attitudes on the extended brand attitudes was stronger when brand familarity was high. Fourth, the influence of original brand attitudes on the extended brand attitudes was stronger when the perceived expertise of negative information source on the extended brand was high. Therefore, the results suggest that extending brands requires the systematic brand management considering customers' variables such as fashion involvement, brand familiarity, negative information etc. Also, it seems that the brand strategy should be based on the segmentation for targeted customers' characteristics.

  • This study assessed the effectiveness of brand image communication on consumer perceptions of cruelty-free fashion brands. Brand messaging data were gathered from postings on the official Instagram accounts of three cruelty-free fashion brands and consumer perception data were gathered from Tweets containing keywords related to each brand. Web crawling and natural language processing were performed using Python and sentiment analysis was conducted using the BERT model. By analyzing Instagram content from Stella McCartney, Patagonia, and Freitag from their inception until 2021, this study found these brands all emphasize environmental aspects but with differing focuses: Stella McCartney on ecological conservation, Patagonia on an active outdoor image, and Freitag on upcycled products. Keyword analysis further indicated consumers perceive these brands in line with their brand messaging: Stella McCartney as high-end and eco-friendly, Patagonia as active and environmentally conscious, and Freitag as centered on recycling. Results based on the assessment of the alignment between brand-driven images and consumer-perceived images and the sentiment evaluation of the brand confirmed the outcomes of brand communication performance. The study revealed a correlation between brand image and positive consumer evaluations, indicating that higher alignment of ethical values leads to more positive consumer assessments. Given that consumers tend to prioritize search keywords over brand concepts, it's important for brands to focus on using visual imagery and promotions to effectively convey brand communication information. These findings highlight the importance of brand communication by emphasizing the connection between ethical brand images and consumer perceptions.
