  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the farms growing domestic kiwi fruit 'Gold' on their management performance and efficiency in order to reduce the risks involved with introducing new kind of crops for growing, and suggest improvements. First, the result of analysis showed that domestic kiwi fruit 'Gold' growers' income were higher than the average growers due to the fruit's high unit price and productivity. Second, the analysis of management efficiency resulted in scale efficiency having greater impact on inefficiency rather than pure technical efficiency. As for the analysis of technical efficiency, the depreciation costs of agricultural facilities had the greatest influence on its inefficiency. Third, inefficient farms put in excessive inputs across the board, while labor costs(self labor cost + hired labor cost) were the largest factor of optimal inputs according to the models of technical efficiency and pure technical efficiency. Fourth, because of greater reliance on mechanical tools from rising labor costs, there's a need for individual farms to avoid buying farming equipments and instead share the equipments of nearby farms and agricultural cooperatives, or start renting agricultural machines from companies.

  • The study aims to explore the problems of analysis unit when examining management performance and efficiency using DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis). Generally the DEA results depend on input, output, and analysis units. We used data from Park (2012) which analyze paddy farmers in Jeonnam province. Results show that data from farm household unit was well fitted to examine management efficiency, not data from per area unit. This study will be helpful for researchers and practitioners to understand proper analysis unit when using the DEA for enhancing farm competitiveness.

  • Of the new and renewable energies currently being pursued domestically, wind energy, together with solar photovoltaic energy, is a new core growth driver industry of Korea. As of May 2012, 33 wind farms at a capacity of 347.8MW are in operation domestically. The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze how efficiently each operational wind farm is utilizing its power generation capacity and the weather resource of wind. For this purpose, the study proceeded in 3 phases. In phase 1, ANOVA analysis was performed for each wind farm, thereby categorizing farms according to capacity, region, generator manufacturer, and quantity of weather resources available and comparing and analyzing the differences among their operating efficiency. In phase 2, for comparative analysis of the operating efficiency of each farm, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was used to calculate the efficiency index of individual farms. In the final phase, phase 3, regression analysis was used to analyze the effects of weather resources and the operating efficiency of the wind farm on the power generation per unit equipment. Results shows that for wind power generation, only a few farms had relatively high levels of operating efficiency, with most having low efficiency. Regression analysis showed that for wind farms, a 1 hour increase in wind speeds of at least 3m/s resulted in an average increase of 0.0000045MWh in power generation per 1MW generator equipment capacity, and a unit increase in the efficiency scale was found to result in approximately 0.20MWh power generation improvement per unit equipment.

  • Wholesale beef price is the critical factor for determining Korean native cattle, Hanwoo, farm's income in short-term. Wholesale beef price has seasonality due to high demand in Korean traditional holidays such as Korean thanksgiving day and lunar new year's day. Therefore, it is important to make reproduction and marketing plans for Korean Hanwoo farmers, in order to increase their farm income. However, there is no study available on changes in the expected farm income depending on reproduction and marketing schedules. This study analyzed the expected farm income per head depending on the monthly-based marketing schedules. The analysis was conducted based on the seasonality of wholesale beef price, reproduction efficiency, operating costs, relationship between carcass grade and slaughter age. The result shows that slaughter Hanwoo at the age of 29 months-old in August and January generating the highest expected farm income per head.

  • Various environmental conditions affecting total phosphorus removal from farm wastewater in a biofilm filter process were investigated using loess balls and Chromobacterium LEE-38 at a pilot plant. When Chromobacterium LEE-38 was used, the removal efficiency of total phosphorous was approximately 10- or 5-fold higher than that of Acinetobacter CHA-2-14 or Acinetobacter CHA-4-5, respectively. When a loess ball of $11{\sim}14mm$ manufactured at a $960^{\circ}C$ calcining temperature was used, the removal efficiency of total phosphorous was 90.0%. When 70% of the volume fraction was used, the maximum efficiency of total phosphorus removal was 93.1%. Notably, when the initial pH was in the range of 6.0 to 8.0, the maximum removal efficiency of total phosphorus was obtained after 30 days. When the operating temperature was in the range of 30 to $55^{\circ}C$, the maximum removal efficiencies of total phosphorus, 95.6 to 94.6%, were obtained. On the other hand, at operating temperatures below $20^{\circ}C$ or above $40^{\circ}C$, the removal efficiency of total phosphorous decreased. Among the various processes, biofilm filter process A gave the highest removal efficiency of 96.4%. Pilot tests of total phosphorus removal using farm wastewater from the biofilm filter process A were carried out for 60 days under optimal conditions. When Acinetobacter sp. Lee-11 was used, the average removal efficiency in the p-adsorption area was only 32.5%, and the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) were 56.7 and 62.5%, respectively. On the other hand, when Chromobacterium LEE-38 was used, the average removal efficiency was 95.1%, and the removal efficiencies of COD and BOD were 91.3 and 93.2%, respectively.

  • This study evaluates wind farm efficiency at Haengwon in Jeju Island. The actual energy production at Haengwon wind farm is compared with the estimated energy production based on Korean wind map which is developed at the National Institute of Meteorological Research/KMA. The validation of wind map at Gujwa located near the Haengwon wind farm shows that the wind speed is overestimated. The diurnal variation of wind speed shows a maximum value in the afternoon due to the effect of sea-land breeze. The ratio of the actual energy production at Haengwon wind farm and the estimated energy production based on the Korean wind map is 24.8%, while the distribution of energy frequency is similar each other. The difference of energy production is caused by mechanical error of the turbine and the overestimation of the simulated wind map. This study will contribute to the repowering of turbines for improving the efficiency of wind farm in the future.

  • In 1990's, two types of land consolidation has been widely carried out to enforce competativeness of rice production in Korea. One is so called large-scale land consolidation for resizing paddy field and farm road, the other is general land consolidation for changing both size and shape of field, water channel and farm road. This study was conducted to evaluate how much effect on fm mechanization the land consolidation had. To evaluate the influence of the land consolidation, theoretical analysis and surveys were accomplished. Land consolidation was analyzed to increase field efficiency by 180 to 670% depending on the type of land consolidation and machine selection. Also, land consolidation brought increment of real working time ratio by reducing traveling time on farm road. Trends of large scale mechanization and increment of custom work were observed to be accelerated by land consolidation. It also gave effect on the pattern of machine troubles. Farmers were conscious of the influence of land consolidation on machine utilization, however, in plains level of satisfaction was shown to be low.

  • In this papur, the STATCOM (STATic synchronous COMpensator) application for efficient operations of wind farm is described. The wind farm connected with the electric power network is one of good alternative energy sources. However, it would be also highly possible that interconnection of wind farm causes unwanted influences on distribution system operation, protection and control. This paper proposes the STATCOM application for reducing the negative effects from interconnection of wind farm with distribution networks. The simulation results show that STATCOM would be on effective and useful device to resolve the bad influences from wind farm on distribution networks and improve the operational efficiency of wind farm. In the simulation, the radial distribution network of IEEE 13 bus was modeled using PSCAD/EMTDC.
