  • The purpose of this study was to prove the effects of parents' family-of-origin experiences on their parenting efficacy among 260 parents with children aged between 3 and 7. The results were as follows. First, depending on parents' gender, with children aged between 3 and 7, both parents were found to positively perceive each factor in their family-of-origin experience and parenting efficacy. Second, fathers showed differences based on their income satisfaction and their mothers' employment status in their family of origin. Mothers showed differences in parenting efficacy according to their age, monthly average family income, and economic status in their family of origin. Third, both parents' experiences with their family of origin were correlated with their parenting efficacy. Fourth, family-of-origin health was found to be the most significant family-of-origin variable influencing parents' parenting efficacy. Wealth and experience of triangulation were found to be the influential factors common to both parents. Fathers' experiences of acceptance from their parents in their family of origin was a predictive factor of parenting efficacy. In contrast, in the case of mothers with more than two kids, when their family of origin was an extended family and when the mother in their family of origin had stayed at home, they showed higher parenting efficacy in their current parenting.

Data were collected through a questionnaire from 557 university students in the Jeollabuk-do of South Korea. The collected data were analyzed by basic descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlations and multiple regression analysis. Baron and Kenny's method was used and examined, and the Sobel test was performed to determine the mediating model's significance. It was adapted to SPSS ver. 18.0 for Windows. The major findings were as follows: first, the functioning of family-of-origin was negatively related to the fear of intimacy. • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of family climate of fathers' family of origin, fathers' satisfaction with marriage and life, and parenting on father-son intimacy. A total of 297 adolescents(M=15 yrs. SD=1.4) and their fathers completed questionnaires. Data were analyzed by structural equation model using AMOS 7.0. Results indicated that 1) family climate of fathers' family of origin affected further-son intimacy positively through both fathers' high marital and life satisfaction, and thereby supportive parenting behavior. 2) Family climate of the family of origin affected farther-son intimacy negatively through low marital satisfaction and thereby high psychological controlling parenting. These results evinced that family climate of father's family of origin could be the source of father-son intimacy while fathers' marital and life satisfaction and parenting behaviors mediate the relationships.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of anxiety in mediating the influence of family of origin characteristics on subsequent relationship processes. Using Bowenian theory as a foundation, this study examined the causal relationships among gender, religion, family of origin-fusion, intimacy, intimidation, personal-trait-anxiety, couple open communication and relationship satisfaction. Results of the path analysis indicated that: (a) gender, religion, family of origin-fusion, and family of origin-intimidation were directly related to personal-trait-anxiety, (b) personal-trait-anxiety was directly related to couple open communication and not related to relationship satisfaction, (c) couple open communication was directly related to relationship satisfaction, and (d) family of origin factors were not directly related to couple open communication and relationship satisfaction; rather, as it was expected, indirect associations, through the mediation of anxiety, were found. The results generally support Bowen's intergenerational process theory, which asserts that anxiety is the mediator of the process. Limitations of the current study and suggestions for further research were discussed.
