The study was conducted in the following three steps, theoretical phase, fieldwork phase, and final analytic phase. Results: The definition of respite care for family caregivers of elders with dementia was delineated through integration of data analyses in theoretical and fieldwork phase, and has three dimensions; tailored supports for caregivers, tailored supports based on physical and cognitive function of elders with dementia and community interventions related to family care function. Conclusion: Through this study, the concept of respite care for family caregivers of elders with dementia is clarified and reformulated as nursing practice phenomena in the Korean context, which indicates ways to develop caring practice forms for a family living with an elder with dementia in a community setting.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of lifestyle intervention on the development of fatigue, nutritional status and quality of life of patients with gynecologic cancer. Methods: A nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental design was used. Participants were 49 patients with gynecologic cancer. They were assigned to the experiment group (n=24) or the control group (n=25). The lifestyle intervention for this study consisted of physical activity, nutritional education, telephone call counseling, health counseling, monitoring for lifestyle, and affective support based on Cox's Interaction Model of Client Health Behavior and was implemented for six weeks. Results: Significant group differences were found for fatigue (p =.037), nutritional status (p =.034) and social/family well-being (p =.035) in these patients with gynecologic cancer. Conclusion: Results indicate that this lifestyle intervention is effective in lessening fatigue, and improving nutritional status and social/family well-being. Therefore, nurses in hospitals should develop strategies to expand and provide lifestyle interventions for patients with cancer.

The caregivers were caring for a family member who had a CVA (cerebrovascular accident) and who had been admitted to the ICU (intensive care unit). Method: The research design was a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design. Data were collected from April 1 to October 31, 2005 at D hospital in Busan City The participants were 40 family caregivers of patients with a CVA admitted to the ICU. Caregivers in the experimental group participated in the information protocol for 30 min. Both groups were pre-tested before the intervention for two variables, anxiety and nursing needs. The post-test of both groups included anxiety and nursing satisfaction. The instruments used in this study were the Spielberger's state anxiety inventory (1976) and the nursing satisfaction scale developed by Molter (1979). Results: Anxiety scores were significantly lower and nursing satisfaction scores were significantly higher for caregivers in the experimental group compared to those in the control group. Conclusion: The information protocol was effective in reducing anxiety and increasing the level of nursing satisfaction of family caregivers caring for an ICU patients with a CVA.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify nursing interventions performed by neonatal nursing unit nurses. For data collection this study used the taxonomy of Nursing Intervention Classification(NIC : 486 nursing intervention) which was modified by McCloskey & Bulecheck(2000). The new 58 nursing interventions was translated into Korean, and then modified by pannel group, which consist of clinical experts and nursing scholars and finally the 419 nursing interventions was selected. The data were collected from 112 nurses. 168 nursing interventions were performed at least monthly by 50% or more of the nurses. The high frequency of performed nursing interventions were Family domain. 37 nursing interventions were performed at least once a day. The nursing interventions receiving the highest item mean score were neonatal care, neonatal monitoring, photo-therapy; neonate, bottle feeding and temperature regulation. 56 nursing interventions were rarely performed by 90% or more of the nurses. Most of them were in the behavioral domain. The rarely used interventions were urinary bladder training, art therapy, religious addiction prevention, religious ritual enhancement and bladder irrigation. Therefore, neonatal nursing units nurses used interventions in the Physiological: basic domain most often on a daily basis and the interventions in the behavioral domain least often. These findings will help in building of a standardized language for the neonatal nursing units and enhance the quality of nursing care. Further study will be needed to classify each intervention class and nursing activity and validate NIC in pediatric care unit.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to identify the perceived nursing needs and the differences by general characteristics of parents of infants in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and to provide useful evidences developing a new intervention for family-centered care in NICU. Methods: A convenience sample of 121 parents of infants in NICU was used and the participants asked to complete the Korean version of NICU Family Needs Inventory (NFNI) from April to May, 2014. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA. Results: The participants reported high average score in the perceived nursing needs. In subscales, needs for assurance rated highest score and needs for information, proximity, support, and comfort were followed. Mothers reported higher nursing needs score than fathers except the subscale of support. Conclusion: The findings suggest that nurses in NICU actively provide information about treatment, nursing, results of laboratory tests, and current status to give reassurance to parents. Not only providing informational support of parents of NICU infants, but also finding methods to contact to parents is necessary. In addition, nurses need to provide optimized intervention in current healthcare system and hospital environment.

Methods: The subjects for this study were 120 patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention in H hospital in B city > 6 months. The data was collected from June 1 to September 30, 2010. Spousal supports were measured by the Family Support questionnaire. Self-efficacy was measured by revised Self Efficacy questionnaire. Adherent behavior was measured by revised Adherence Behavior questionnaire. Results: A multiple regression analysis showed that the most significant predictor of adherent behavior was self-efficacy, followed by spousal support, whether the subjects do regular exercise and the type of diagnosis. Conclusion: Findings suggest that intervention focusing on self-efficacy and spousal support will be needed to improve the adherent behavior among patients with percutaneous coronary intervention.

  • Purpose: Family-caregivers of stroke patients usually go through hardship and life style changes during the protracted course of a family member's rehabilitation. There is need for programs to educate family-caregivers to better manage the medical crisis. In this study an evaluation was done of the degrees of burden and well-being experienced by primary family-caregivers following video-guided education (VGE) on rehabilitation and family lifestyle changes. Method: Fifty-eight primary family-caregivers of stroke patients on a neurological ward were divided into VGE (29) and control (29) groups. VGE was started within 7 days of patient admission. Interventions included VGE, counseling, and demonstration - re-demonstration. The control group received standard education but not VGE. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test, t-test, ANCOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients with the SAS program. Results: The VGE group had a significantly lower score for total burden (F=7.19, p=.010) and for sub-scale of time-dependent burden (F=8.44, p=.005) than the control group. There was a negative correlation between primary family-caregiver burden and well-being (r=-.7151, p<.001). Conclusion: Results suggest that the rehabilitation program using VGE was an effective nursing intervention to reduce the burden of primary family-caregivers of stroke patients.
