  • This article attempts to explore how the women retirees under study were able to continue work until retirement. This study used life histories, especially focusing on daily working lives, and uncovered a number of key issues through in-depth interviews. The main results are as follows: Firstly, the women retirees examined here had been raised as highly educated people, and their strong educational background was a base component for them to have relatively secure careers. Their parents had also supported practically the women retirees during their working lives. In addition, the women retirees had to can out the roles of 'provider' for their original families, procreation families or in-law families, even though they were not given the recognized roles of provider. Secondly, the women retirees had a private infra system to support them with housework and child care. In addition, because they were financially able to employ housemaids, the women retirees did not experience conflicts with their husbands, who took on a neo-traditional sex role. Finally, thanks to relatively good working conditions such as having vacations and being able to come to and leave the office on time, the women retirees were able to continue work until retirement no mean feat in a society which openly practiced gender discrimination.

  • This study examined the 17th century wedding ceremonies of princes and princesses recorded in the "Garyedeungrok(嘉禮謄錄)". The Joseon dynasty royal weddings were held outside the palace, so it could have influenced wedding ceremonies of commoners. Royal weddings for princes and princesses were considered to be on a level between that of a king and commoners. Wedding procedure of princes and princesses was carried out under the leadership of the royal family who officiated at a marriage with the king's approval. In addition, kindred of the king and high-ranking officials participated as the maid of honor in the wedding parade. This was completely different between the royal wedding and the scholar-gentry ones. A difference between the prince and the princess was that the princess paid her respect to the shrine of the house of her groom after the wedding ceremony. However, there was no process for the prince's bride. There also existed a wide disparity in the wedding goods of princes and princesses. The prince and the king's son-in-law both held a wedding ceremony to wear Chopo, but there was a difference in decoration or quantity of Danlyeong(團領) Cheollik(帖裏) Hoseul(護膝) belts. Only princes were allowed to use the ornamental knife and the embroidered pouch. While both the princess and prince's wife wore No-ui(露衣) and Jangsam(長衫) as the wedding clothes, there was discrimination of position in terms of hair decoration, Hwalhansam(闊汗衫), skirt, Hosu(胡袖) and Ni-ui(裏衣). There was also a difference of quantity of Jeogori and skirts, as well as various styles of gold decorations in order to distinguish the Gongju(daughter of the king) and the Gunju (daughter of the crown prince)'s position.

  • The increase of wheelchair users due to the rapid growth of elderly population, traffic accidents, and industrial disaster etc. becomes a major issue in our society. Thus, the Convenience Promotion Law was enforced to facilitate the use and installation of convenient facilities for the disabled, the elderly and pregnant women. Currently, not only newly built buildings but also roads and parks are accessed and used by all the people without any hindrance. In contrast to this, so far not many studies on residential space design for wheelchair users have been carried out except for public facilities. So, wheelchair users have to bear the inconvenience in their houses made upon the standards of the general people. Therefore, it is necessary to develop design guideline considering the physical characteristics of wheelchair users and their family members to lead a convenient life. This study was conducted in universal design perspective and intended to establish design guideline of convenient residential space for wheelchair users and general people. To accomplish the objective, surveys for wheelchair users' actual conditions and needs, and video observation were carried out.

  • Tornadoes are vertical swirling air formed because of the existence of layers of air with contrasting features of temperature, wind flow, moisture, and density. Tornadoes induce completely different wind forces than a straight-line (SL) wind. A suitably designed building for an SL wind may fail when exposed to a tornado-wind of the same wind speed. It is necessary to design buildings that are more resistant to tornadoes. In tornado-damaged areas, dome buildings seem to have less damage. As a dome structure is naturally wind resistant, domes have been used in back yards, as single family homes, as in-law quarters, man caves, game rooms, storm shelters, etc. However, little attention has been paid to the tornadic wind interactions with dome buildings. In this work, the tornado forces on a dome are computed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for tornadic and SL wind. Then, the interaction of a tornado with a dome and a prism building are compared and analyzed. This work describes the results of the tornado wind effect on dome and prism buildings. The conclusions drawn from this study are illustrated in visualizations. The tornado force coefficients on a dome building are larger than SL wind forces, about 120% more in x- and y-directions and 280% more in z-direction. The tornado maximum pressure coefficients are also higher than SL wind by 150%. The tornado force coefficients on the prism are larger than the forces on the dome, about 100% more in x- and y-directions, and about 180% more in z-direction. The tornado maximum pressure coefficients on prism also are greater those on dome by 150% more. Hence, a dome building has less tornadic load than a prism because of its aerodynamic shape.

  • This study discusses about virtues and character of good parents for the rearing of children through the written by Lee, Deok-Moo treating traditional education in late Chosun Dynasty. The study is conducted by answering the two questions for inquiry. First, what is the virtues and character of parents discussed in ? Second, what is the modern meaning of character of the parents? Father's character is expressed as 'stability and warmth', 'trust and moderation' and 'understanding and consideration'. And Mother's character includes 'politeness and harmony', 'responsibility' and 'understanding and consideration'. These results present three important implications from a modern perspective. First, children inherit character and virtues of parents through visual learning. Second, character and virtues of parents are expressed as language and behavior. Third, it is emphasized as ethics of family. Fourth, it is closely linked to the core virtues of character within the [Character Education Promotion Law]. Therefore, parents need to do self-reflection and effort to improve their own characters for character education of next generation.

  • Type A and Type B and are commercial HTPB models, which are very popular prepolymer for polyurethane binder family. So the study has been performed on the physical, chemical characteristic of HTPB and viscosity, mechanical property of PBX-A applying to HTPB. But We excluded the Type A from Appication test, because of law Hydroxyl value. And in the case of Type B, Type B-1, 2 has mechanical disadvatage to apply to HTPB in the process comparing with B-3. It seems to make no problem if we change equivalence ratio or curing condition within standards. But if we are to apply process condition like R-45HT(US-sample), it would be essential to apply HTPB with higher Hydroxyl Value and hydroxyl Functionality.

  • Purpose: The study was to compare the factors of life satisfaction between grandmothers parenting and not parenting their grandchildren. Methods: A descriptive design with a convenience sampling was used for this study. From communities in S and U city, 85 parenting grandmothers (PG) and 103 non-parenting grandmothers (NPG) were recruited. The PG were those grandmothers who cared for preschooler grandchildren for their daughter or daughter-in-law who was employed. Results: The demographics of the two groups were similar, however the value of grandparenting was significantly higher in the PG than the NPG (t=4.56, p<.001). In the PG, strong and significant correlations were found among the value of grandparenting, health status, quality of relations with adult children, and life satisfaction. However, demographics were more related to health status and life satisfaction in the NPG. The value of grandparenting, health status, and quality of grandmother-adult children relations were found to be significant factors of life satisfaction (F=20.75, p <.001) explaining 42% of the variances. In the NPG, only health status was a significant factor (F=50.66, p <.001) explaining 33% of the variances. Conclusion: This study shows that grandmothers' perceptions of grandparenting and family relationships need to be incorporated into the lifestyle in order to support parenting grandmothers' life satisfaction while grandmothers' health is the common concern of elderly women's life satisfaction.

  • The elder abuse draws an increasing concern as the elderly population grows rapidly, and increasing demands to provide long-term care to the impaired elderly are imposed on the families. This study compares Korean American elders' and their adult children's perceptions of possible elder abuse under care-giving situation, and related help-seeking behaviors using five scenarios developed by the author. The subjects consist of ten elders and their ten adult children including daughters-in-law who live in Los Angeles, the USA. Content analysis reveals very similar help-seeking behaviors of the two generations within the family despite the substanally generational difference towards the perceptions of elder abuse under care-giving situation. Mann-Whitney test shows a significant difference in the perceptions of elder abuse between the elderly and their adult children. It means that the elderly are substantially less likely to perceive a given situation as abusive than their adult children would. But there is no significant difference between the elderly and their adult children in their intended use of formal sources of help. Implications for gerontological social work practice and program development are discussed.
