Cancer is the second leading cause of the death in Korea. Family caregivers of dying patients manifest many psychological and physical symptoms of stress, and they often seek for informational support from health care providers. Unfortunately, however, few systematic studies identify the actual effect of such support on family caregivers. This study, thus, intends to evaluate the effect of informational support for hospice care. One group pretest-posttest design was used, employing the stress-coping model by Cohen and Wills as a conceptual framework. This research was conducted from July 1 to November 15, 1998, initially with 32 subjects sampled from hemato-oncology department of two general hospitals in Seoul, but reduced to 18 at the end due to the untimely death of patients or caregiver's refusal during the course of study. Informational supports were programmed to provide the family caregivers with 8 times of education and counseling as well as 24-hour hot-line for 4 weeks. A booklet that explains the various problems of hospice care was also prepared and distributed to all subjects. Data were collected by using self-report questionnaires and reviewing medical records. The tools used in this study were based on the Weinert's PRQ-II(scale of perceived social support), Spielberger's state anxiety inventory, and CES-D. Also included in the data collection were the general characteristics of family caregivers and patients, and the pain intensity and the performance status of patients. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon sign rank test and paired t-test using SPSSWIN program. The results of the study were as follows: 1.The perceived social support of family caregivers was not significantly increased with informational support for hospice care(t=1.64, one tailed p=.060). 2.The anxiety of family caregivers was significantly reduced following informational support for hospice care(t=3.48, one tailed p=.002). 3.The depression of family caregivers was significantly reduced following informational support for hospice care(t=-2.18, one tailed=.022). 4.The pain intensity of patients with terminal cancer was significantly reduced following informational support for hospice care(t=-2.41, two tailed p=.027). The results suggest that the informational support provided to family caregivers of patients with terminal cancer reduced not only their anxiety and depression but also the pain intensity of patients. Further study is necessary to consolidate the conceptual framework of this study with expanded number of subjects. Nevertheless, it was certain that the informational support program for hospice care was very helpful to both caregivers and patients. Thus, the informational support program is strongly recommended for the hospitals which have no hospice unit yet.

This exploratory study, related to the introduction of Western-style family doctors, was conducted based on a comparative survey of medical care satisfaction in foreign residents of the U.S. and Canada based on a consumer-centered perspective. As a result of statistical analysis based on 493 collections of empirical data from 2016 to 2018, the main conclusions of this study are as follows. First, there was no evidence that satisfaction with US and Canadian family doctors was higher than the satisfaction with Korean primary care physicians. Second, satisfaction with Korean primary care physicians was high with regard to treatment, promptness, etc., and there was no evidence that foreign family doctor systems were better in terms of sufficient counseling and explanation. Third, overseas Koreans in the United States showed less satisfaction with their family doctors than Koreans in Canada. Fourth, overseas Koreans preferred to visit a hospital directly, without a referral from the family doctor. In conclusion, there is insufficient evidence showing that satisfaction with family doctors in the U.S. and Canada is higher than satisfaction with primary care doctors in Korea. Therefore, a more in-depth, additional analysis on the Western-style family doctor is needed before introducing such a system in Korea.

The purpose of this study sought to examine the mediating effect of social support in the relationship between adolescents' family strength and school life adjustment. For this purpose, a survey was conducted from May 2023 to June 2023 on youth attending middle and high schools in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, and statistical analysis was performed on the data of 768 people without missing data using SPSS 21.0 program. The results of this study were as follows. First, the family strength perceived by adolescents was found to have a significant positive effect on school life adaptation. Second, the family strength perceived by adolescents was found to have a significant positive effect on social support. Third, social support was found to have a positive and significant effect on school life adaptation. Fourth, social support showed a partial mediating effect in the relationship between adolescents' perceived family strength and school life adjustment. These research results have implications in that they provide empirical evidence to help adolescents adapt well to school life based on healthy family relationships. In addition, we hope that this will serve as a practical basis for the use of parent education programs and family counseling programs that help adolescents adapt well to school life by eliciting social support through positive family functions at home.
Despite the importance of the marital treatment in the recovery process of alcohol dependency, the domestic situation lacks the programs for recovering alcoholic couples. It is very hard to find any program for couples with an alcoholic in recovery. Most of the related researches only deal with hospitalized patients and their families due to their limitations in contact with appropriate subjects. This imposes a limit in their expert and validity. This research finds its aim in investigating the needs of recovering alcoholic couples and of clinical professionals, and providing basic data for the development of program for recovering alcoholic couples. This research was studied with 20 recovering alcoholic couples with a mean duration of 3.9 years of sobriety and 10 clinical professionals with a mean duration of 7.5 years of alcohol-abuse counseling experience. As a result, it appeared that a marital program that covers communication skills, sex, domestic violence, financial problems and original family issues in relation with codependency would be appropriate; the program would also involve issues about relapse.

Exploring the risk factors of adolescent suicide is important for effective suicide prevention. This study explored the clustering of adolescent suicides based on six risk factors: mental disorder, broken family, depression, anxiety, previous suicide attempts, and deviant behaviors. Using 173 student suicide reports obtained from the Ministry of Education, we evaluated the associations between suicide and variables related to mental disorders; dysfunctional family life; depression and anxiety; previous suicide attempts; deviant behaviors such as drinking and smoking; and school life characteristics, including attendance and discipline, problems within the past year, and incidents prior to suicide. In addition, reports of warning signs just before suicide were included in the analysis. The two-stage cluster analysis classified the students into three clusters: the silent type (cluster 1; 48.55%), in which no risk factors were observed; environmental-risk type (cluster 2: 24.28%), which featured a high frequency of broken households, deviant behaviors such as smoking/drinking and running away from home; and depressive type (cluster 3: 27.17%), which featured a high frequency of mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and suicide attempts. Identifying the sub-types of adolescent suicide may help to inform tailored suicide prevention and intervention strategies in school.
The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of forgiveness exercised by middle-aged married women. The subjects of the research were 345 married women selected randomly among inhabitants of Seoul. A research questionnaire was employed to gather information. The study results revealed four major patterns. First, they felt hurt by those to whom they were connected continuously in daily life, such as friends, colleagues, siblings, spouses. Second, the respondents stated that they would be very badly hurt and deeply wounded as a result of a hateful speech or suffering experience caused by people of immediate relations. Third, among the three sub-areas of forgiveness, forgiveness in cognitive category was the highest, followed by behavioral and emotional categories. Fourth, as far as the surrounding variables regarding the degree of forgiveness was concerned, physical health and happiness of the family were important while their age, gender, religion, economic levels, experience of forgiving others didn't make a difference at all.
The purpose of this study is to classify the characteristic and conduct a typological analysis of college students' attitudes toward remarriage by the elderly, employing Q-methodology. The results are as follows: College students strongly supported the opinion that remarriage relieves the elderly of loneliness, and that familial support is crucial for the remarriage to happen. They also rejected of the idea that the elderly would feel ashamed to remarry. Students' attitudes towards the elderly's remarriage fell into three classifications: the progressively accepting type, the realistically accepting type, and the conservatively accepting type. Type 1, "progressively accepting type" enthusiastically accepts and supports the elderly's remarriage as a progressive and emotive relationship. The "realistically accepting type" holds the opinion that remarriage in later life is based on overcoming loneliness or satisfying attachment need rather than love. This typology believes that the elderly would not be equal as spouses, and would not be overly distressed by public perception. The type 3, "conservatively accepting type" believes that remarriage would be likely to strain the elderly's relationship with other family members, that it will not be the beginning of a new independent life, but are generally accepting of the idea of remarriage in later life.
